Access or Excel

Dear all, I would like to ask for advice whether I should use MS Access or Excel for data crunching. I have been using Excel for some work I am doing on Old English poetry where I am looking at specific features of a fixed set of poems. However, I have decided also to look at other aspects of the same set of poems. To put it in a nutshell, I have three sets of data I want to compare concerning the same poems in order to see where the trends are. I know how to use Excel fairly well - at least to get statistical information - but I have been getting into trouble when trying to find trends across several sets of data. I thought about pivot tables, but I am not sure if that's the way to go, when I think that I may be able to do things easier in Access - even though I don't know anything about how to use it. Which application would you suggest I use? Best, Abdullah Alger

Actually, there's a module called Liquid if you want to have wikis with Drupal: http://drupal.org/project/liquid . I haven't tried this particular module, but I've now been using Drupal for two months on the website I maintain (http://www.arlima.net) and it's exceeded all expectations. It seems that there's very little that you can't do with Drupal. It might be worth investigating WordPress <http://wordpress.org/>, as well, as it has similar features to TextPattern. It's a little more blog-oriented, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Hi, Does anybody have advice on how to maintain a professional academic homepage--I mean the page one uses for class material, information on research, etc. I tend to use wikis a lot now for personal notekeeping and the like, and I very much like the way they work: very easy to enter new material and edit old material, for example. But, apart from the fact that they can be edited easily, Wikis are obviously more like a card catalogue than a structured site. You can give them structure with categories, but it isn't natural to them. What I'd love to find is some kind of similar system for more structured sets of pages: something where I could easily edit, say, the index page by simply calling it up, and where I could get an over view of the relationships of all the other pages (In general, I try to keep pages where they are so that I can find them again when students need to know what was taught in 1999; that can make things unwieldy): copy previous syllabi and edit the new representations, etc., preferably WYSIWIG or with minimal tagging. Anybody have any suggestions? I don't mind experimenting with server-based software (I set up and break down the wikis all the time, after all), though an export/publish function might be required in the end, as my university space is pretty much for storage I believe rather than running software from. Linux-based solutions are better: I think our university server is Redhat. Thanks in advance, -dan

Manuscript Workshop at the University of Tennessee

(with apologies for cross-posting) The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville will host a two-day workshop on manuscript studies on February 9 and 10, 2007. The workshop's co- directors are Thomas E. Burman (History), Maura K. Lafferty (Classics), and Roy Liuzza (English). Last year’s workshop discussed the practices of textual editing; this year’s topic is “Everything but the Text,” by which we mean the many different sorts of things that appear above, around, into, beside or between texts in manuscripts: glosses, marginalia, punctuation, running headings, chapter divisions, interpolations, additions, accompanying works, illustrations, doodles, pen trials, bits of stray poetry or prose, pointing fingers, etc. Such material can be easy to overlook, difficult to represent and baffling to explain, but it can also tell us a great deal about how manuscripts, and the texts in them, were read, used, and understood. The theme is meant to be understood as broadly as possible; we would especially welcome participation by scholars working on the relation between text and image, the compilation of anthologies and miscellanies, epigraphy and inscribed objects, page design and meaning, systems for indexing, organizing, or linking commentary to text, and so on. The workshop is open to scholars and students at any rank and from any discipline. Individual ninety-minute sessions will be devoted to each participant’s project; participants will introduce their material and its contexts, discuss their approaches to working with this material, and exchange ideas and information about how to represent and interpret this important evidence. Like last year, the workshop is intended to be more like a class than a conference; participants will be invited to discuss both their successes and frustrations, and to work together towards developing a repertoire of professional skills for textual studies. We particularly encourage works in progress, the presentation of unusual manuscript problems or practical difficulties, new technologies and experimental models for studying or representing manuscripts. Presenters will receive a stipend of $500 for their participation. 3D scanning recommendations

Hi all, We are putting together a grant and need to find a contractor who can do very high quality 3D scanning of a smallish object in Belgium. Does anybody have any recommendations? The object is metal and wood and caused us glare problems when we tried photographing it, though I don't think that should be a problem with modelling. I suppose we are looking for a recommendation for a good company or institute with experience in this kind of thing in the Benelux, northern France or Germany.
