Middle English Compendium (inc MED) now freely accessible

FYI ======= The University of Michigan announces that under new arrangements worked out between the University Press and the University Library, all components of the online "Middle English Compendium," including the online version of the Middle English Dictionary, are now freely accessible without fee, password, or any other impediment to access: <http://ets.umdl.umich.edu/m/mec> The MED has hitherto been available only on a subscription or password-protected basis, till the Press recouped its substantial contribution to the original conversion costs. This has now been accomplished, and we are grateful for their agreement that the time has come to liberate it. It was always our hope and intention to open the MED when we could, both in the general interest of public access (to which as a public university library we are dedicated), and with the expectation that open access will facilitate eventual interlinking amongst sibling dictionaries and between MED and other projects (e.g. online editions, which are now free to link lexical lookups to the appropriate MED entry). A proposal for a new society

Hi all, The group that helped found the Digital Medievalist would like very much now to turn what started out as a "project" into something more closely resembling a "society": this would involve particularly establishing aboard with elected officers. Over the last while we've been working on a set of by-laws that would allow us to do this. Dictionary of Old English on Linux

I'm wondering if anyone on this list has done anything about getting the material on the Dictionary of Old English CD (I'm talking about the dictionary proper, not the corpus or other materials) running under Linux. I've made a basic index with links to the entries, so it's sort of usable. But although it probably wouldn't be horribly difficult to put this index in the order used in Old English dictionaries, and even get some of the search functionality now enjoyed by Internet Explorer users, I'm not terribly eager to do it myself. If there's a nice index and/or some Linux programming out there for the DOE, and someone's in a sharing mood, I'd be terribly grateful. Peter Baker

Permanent Teaching Positions at the University of Lethbridge (Second call)

Please forgive a second and final reminder about positions at the University of Lethbridge. Deadline for applications: February 15, 2007. We have two vacancies for permanent "Academic Assistants" (http://www.uleth.ca/hum/Services/career_fac/English_Academic_Assistant_Nove…). These are career teaching positions that are often called "Lecturers" at other universities. The initial appointment will be for a probationary period of two years. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, incumbents will be offered continuing contracts. The minimum qualification for these positions is an M.A. in English or a related discipline. A PhD is preferred. The successful candidates will teach mostly junior-level literary courses in our department (composition is taught in a different department at the University of Lethbridge and faculty in English do not teach composition courses). Successful candidates with a PhD will be eligible to teach senior-level courses in their area of expertise depending on demand and the scheduling requirements of the department. We are a small and cooperative department: Academic Assistants can expect to play a role in developing the shape of the curriculum over their careers. The area of specialisation for these positions is open. We are looking for enthusiastic and accomplished teachers and are willing to work at accommodating particular teaching specialisations into our course offerings alongside the main focus on junior-level literary courses. The course load is expected to be seven 13 week courses per year. Initially, we expect this to be distributed 3:3:1 (i.e. three courses per semester in term with one additional course in the summer). Successful candidates for these teaching positions will not have any formal research requirement though they will be expected to keep up with changes in the discipline and pedagogy. We are required by law to give preference to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This is an international search however, and non-citizens and non-residents are eligible for consideration and employment. Mellon Foundation has generously provided Tufts University with funding to bring two postdoctoral fellows each year for four years to pursue new collaborative research projects with Tufts faculty in the Humanities. Two fellows will be appointed in fall 2007. Each fellow will be housed for two years in a particular department or interdisciplinary program, and will be associated with one or more Tufts faculty members who will serve as advisor/mentor(s). Fellows will be expected to teach one course in the spring semester of their first year and two in the second year of their residency. Applications will be competitively evaluated by the Mellon Postdoctoral Committee There is no requirement that the fellows be U.S. citizens. Applicants for the fellowships must have received their PhD within the past five years. The stipend for fellows will be $46,440 plus benefits, and a research allowance of $6,000 per year. Recipients of the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships will appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, upon the recommendation of the Mellon Postdoctoral Committee and in consultation with appropriate departments.
