Apologies for cross-posting ---------------------------------------- Digital Classicist/ICS Work in Progress Seminar, Summer 2007 Friday 3rd August at 16:30, in room NG16, Senate House, Malet Street, London Melissa Terras (University College London) 'Can computers ever read ancient texts?' Researchers in the Centre of the Study of Ancient Documents, and the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford (and now UCL SLAIS), have been attempting to build a system to aid historians in reading damaged and deteriorated texts, specifically those from Vindolanda. But to what extent can computers ever hope to "read" ancient texts, and how can computers aid (not replace) historians in propagating readings from hard to read documentary material? Mapping the Past – geospatial computing in history and archaeology We would like to invite you to join an online discussion group that deals with the application of geospatial computing in the fields of archaeology and history: http://www.arts-humanities.net/mapping_past This group originated from the AHRC ICT Methods Network workshop 'Space/Time: Methods in geospatial computing for mapping the past' held in Edinburgh earlier this week: http://www.methodsnetwork.ac.uk/activities/act24.html After two days of lively discussion, we concluded that it would be interesting to continue the exchange of ideas beyond the event itself – and to invite other interested parties to join us. As we did some live blogging during the workshop, you can get an idea of the questions and problems we discussed. A more formal report, papers and presentations will be published later. Junicode for Mac

I've just added a Macintosh-specific version of Junicode 0.6.15. It is functionally the same as Junicode for Windows/Linux, but perhaps a little easier to install, and tested in Mellel and XeTeX on the gorgeous MacBook that my department just bought for me. FYI ======== Research Assistant in the use of ICT in Archaeology JISC-funded Research Project, VERA: Virtual Environments for Research in Archaeology Applications are invited for the part-time post of Research Assistant in the School of Library, Archive and Information Studies at UCL to work on VERA: Virtual Environments for Research in Archaeology. This project will research the development and use of a virtual research environment designed for archaeologists by the Roman Silchester Project at the University of Reading (our research collaborators). The post will involve: conducting qualitative studies and recording, analysing and writing up the results as part of a research team at UCL, collaborating with the team at Reading University, collaborating with archaeologists at Silchester, and collaborating with the wider archaeological community utilising the data being produced from the Silchester dig. We aim to discover how archaeologists are using advanced technology, and how new systems can be better designed to help them in their research. The post is available to start on 17 September 2007, with funding for 17 months (to 28 February 2009) on a part-time (50%) basis. Junicode 0.6.15

I didn't want to release a new version of Junicode till I had completed the MUFI spec in the Regular face, but I needed to fix a bug. If you have seen problems with the BoldItalic face in OpenOffice for Windows, you may want to get the new version. Or pick it up if you are desperate for MUFI abbreviations and punctuation that were not yet in 0.6.14. Or if you have been dissatisfied with the look of F109, rounded d. This release also contains a file, aelfric_job.pdf, that illustrates certain typographical niceties especially for Old English (and Old Icelandic), available if you use advanced applications like XeTeX and InDesign. I forgot to release a source package for 0.6.14, but I will do that shortly. Peter
