The scope includes standards, metadata and every phase of CH information technology: initial data capture/digitization, information/data processing, reconstruction, visualization and documentation as well as dissemination of results to the scientific and cultural heritage communities and to the general public (Multilingua, Multimedia Digital Library). We are also interested in aspects of the wider legal, IPR and ethical responsibilities of Cultural Heritage Informatics. Research subjects parallel the interests of CIPA, ISPRS and EuroMed including culturally significant monuments, artefacts and sites as well as the activities of museums, libraries, archives, and organizations involved with their care. TEI @ Oxford Summer School 2010 http://tei.oucs.ox.ac.uk/Oxford/2010-07-oxford/ The TEI @ Oxford Summer School is a three day course introducing the recommendations of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) for encoding of digital text. It combines in-depth coverage of the latest version of the TEI Recommendations for the encoding of digital text with practical workshops on related technologies. It includes an introduction to mark-up, explanations of the TEI Guidelines, and approaches to publishing TEI texts. Practical exercises expose you hands-on experience of a wide range of TEI customisation, editing, and publication. Each day will also include a number of afternoon 2.5 hour parallel workshops on related technologies and topics. These will include TEI Publishing; TEI for Language Resources; Transforming TEI with XSLT; TEI in Libraries; Creating a TEI-based Website with the eXist XML Database; and Genetic Editing: transcribing documents, transcribing the process. There will also be optional surgery sessions for those who wish to consult with TEI@Oxford about their particular projects or encoding issues. There will also be guest lectures from Digital Humanities experts familiar with the TEI talking about their own projects. If you are a project manager, research assistant, or encoder working on any kind of project concerned with the creation or management of digital text, this course is for you. The course runs from Monday 12 July - Wednesday 14 July, 2010. The course runs from 09:30 - 17:30 each day in our fully-equipped computer training rooms. JSTOR and PDF Sizes (TAN)

Hi have a question somebody here may know the answer to. A colleague of mine is scanning back issues of journal she edits for online publication. She is using PDF with OCR to provide full-text searchability a la JSTOR. The issue is that the file sizes are really quite different. A 30pp article from a 1920s issue of Speculum, for example, seems to come in about 1.5-2.0 MB; 5-6 page article in my colleagues journals are coming in about the same size, and other files are well over 4 MB. I haven't seen the settings used for the scanning or OCR yet, but the JSTOR and her files appear to be about the same resolution (eyeballing the page size when things are set to 100%). They look like they are being scanned in B&W, but I haven't checked (perhaps a colour channel is adding to the bulk?). See here for more information: http://www.digitalhumanities.cnrs.fr/wikis/sourcesnumeriques2010 All the best, Marjorie /////////////////////////////////////////////// A l'heure où se multiplient les projets d'édition électronique des sources de la recherche, où de plus en plus de chercheurs voudraient diffuser les matériaux de leurs recherches, et où des bibliothèques et centres de documentation souhaitent valoriser leur patrimoine scientifique, l'ampleur de l'entreprise peut désemparer : comment se lancer dans un tel projet, à qui s'adresser, quelles compétences rassembler, quels financements trouver, comment assurer le succès de ce projet, comment garantir la pérennité d'une diffusion en ligne, etc. C'est pour donner aux personnes impliquées dans un tel projet des éléments de réponse à toutes ces questions que le Service éditorial et publication électronique de l'Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes (SEPE, IRHT-CNRS), rejoint par des acteurs du domaine des humanités numériques, propose une action nationale à gestion déconcentrée (ANGD) soutenue par la formation permanente du CNRS et le TGE Adonis, sur la production, l'édition, la gestion et la diffusion des sources numériques de la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales. L'objectif de cette formation, d'une durée d'une semaine, est ambitieux mais précis. A travers un cas d'école permettant la mise en situation des stagiaires, par des exercices pratiques et de nombreuses prises de parole, des ateliers aborderont successivement les différentes étapes du processus. L'identification des acteurs, la répartition des tâches, la définition d'un calendrier rigoureux, la coordination de la communication tant au sein de l'équipe qu'en direction des tiers (financeurs, public), l'anticipation des problèmes qui peuvent survenir, l'articulation entre la structuration des données et l'usage qui en sera fait, apparaîtront comme les clés de la réussite d'un tel projet. La formation ne donnera pas une marche à suivre impérative, mais cherchera à exposer les manières de procéder, leurs enjeux et leurs limites, pour élaborer une méthode souple qui allie bonnes pratiques et créativité, afin que les stagiaires ajustent avec pertinence leurs acquis aux objectifs scientifiques, éditoriaux et patrimoniaux des projets qu'ils conduiront. Seront abordées des thématiques comme l'établissement du cahier des charges, la définition et la production de métadonnées normalisées, le choix des méthodologies ou des outils de construction, les procédures de travail et leur documentation, les outils collaboratifs (wiki, blogs), l'indexation, l'interopérabilité des données, etc. L'intervention de spécialistes de supports différents (texte, image et son) permettra aux participants de se familiariser avec les notions techniques qui leur seront nécessaires pour opérer ensuite des choix éclairés. En particulier, tout au long de la formation, l'accent sera mis sur les conditions et techniques de pérennisation des données numériques et leurs enjeux méthodologiques. Par ailleurs, cette semaine favorisera la rencontre avec des membres de la communauté des humanités numériques. Les stagiaires tireront de nombreux bénéfices de ces échanges et de l'expérience des projets passés. Here is an announcement circulated by Dr. Juan Garces (British Library), that might be of interest to Digital Medievalists :) Best, Marjorie ///////////////////////////////////////////////////// British Library summer internship 2010 (two months) The British Library has started digitising its medieval and earlier manuscript collections as part of its plans to make them all available to everyone online. The first volumes to be digitised are drawn from the Greek manuscript collections. To support this project, the British Library wishes to recruit an undergraduate or postgraduate intern to work on the TEI XML markup of over 600 Classical, Biblical and Byzantine manuscripts in Greek. The existing descriptions are available as MS Word documents and need to be converted into TEI-compliant XML code. Authority-list entries for authors, scribes and titles of works will be generated from the XML code and will need to be edited, looked up in other resources provided, and linked accordingly. The intern will be supervised by Dr Juan Garces who manages the Greek Manuscripts Digitisation Project. Requirements Essential: The right to live and work in the UK (The British Library is unable to apply for a work visa for this internship). Undergraduate or postgraduate. Good knowledge of XML and a basic understanding of the TEI guidelines. Experience of editing XML. Fluent in written and spoken English. Good time-management and organisational skills. Desirable: Experience of Greek/Byzantine Studies and working with manuscripts. Familiarity with the Oxygen XML editor. Able to work using own initiative.
