Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age November 21-23, 2013 Thinking Outside the Codex In partnership with the Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Schoenberg Institute of Manuscript Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce the 6th Annual Lawrence J. Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age. This year's symposium will encourage participants to "think outside the codex" and turn the tables on traditional approaches to manuscript study. We will explore such topics as how format shapes and limits interpretation, use, and production of manuscripts and how technologies have changed and challenged traditional methods of scholarship. We are especially considering instances of and responses to failure in the history of manuscript production and scholarship. In doing so, we hope to provoke new questions and forge new approaches to the study of the pre-modern book. To kick off the event, a reception and the keynote address will be held Thursday evening, November 21, at the Free Library of Philadelphia. This year's keynote speaker will be Peter Stallybrass, Walter H. and Leonore C. Annenberg Professor in the Humanities, Professor of English and of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, and Director of the History of the Material Text Seminar at the University of Pennsylvania. The symposium begins Friday morning at the newly renovated Special Collections Center of the University Pennsylvania Libraries. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 49th International Congress on Medieval Studies Kalamazoo, Michigan, May 8-11, 2014 Session title: Medieval Texts and Digital Editions: Obstacles and Opportunities Session sponsor: Society for Early English and Norse Electronic Texts (SEENET) and the Piers Plowman Electronic Archive Session organizer: Jim Knowles (jrknowle(a)ncsu.edu) Since being founded in the mid 1990s, SEENET has published a total of ten electronic editions of medieval English texts and/or manuscripts and two reference works, including editions of Piers Plowman, William of Palerne, The Destruction of Troy, and Caedmon’s Hymn. These editions were published on CD-ROM in conjunction with the University of Michigan, the Medieval Academy of America, and Boydell and Brewer. Both SEENET and the Piers Plowman Electronic Archive (PPEA), a branch of SEENET that accounts for seven of the twelve publications to date, are in the process of migrating to the web. At this juncture, SEENET seeks not only to migrate past content to an online environment, but also to launch a large-scale initiative to present online scholarly editions of as many important literary works in Old English, Middle English, and Old Norse as possible. But SEENET is only one of many such projects aimed at revolutionizing the way scholarly editions are created and used. This proliferation of digital and digitized editions of medieval texts available online poses new questions about the forms, uses, and scholarly objectives of critical texts. For this session at Kalamazoo, we invite scholars and editors engaged in digital text projects to discuss new work in any of the following areas: editorial theory and practice in digital environments; intellectual, technical, and institutional challenges posed by born-digital textual projects (along with proposed solutions); and interpretive work on medieval literature that is made possible by the availability of digital text corpora. Passing this along: Call for Papers for Kalamazoo 2014, sponsored by Stanford Center for Medieval & Modern Studies & sponsored by the English Association: CFP #1: 'Millennium: The Year 1014' This session will feature three papers by speakers focusing on a single Medieval year, 1014CE. This year in history proves surprisingly fulcral (Wulfstan's Sermo Lupi ad Anglos in 1014 and the exile of Aethelred; the crowning of the Holy Roman Emperor; the victories of the Byzantine armies, for example). Depending on the papers, the focus on this specific year will illustrate how historical moments can throw our sources, genres, and disciplinary methods into sharp relief. CFP #2: 'The Manuscript in the Digital Age' This session will address the profoundly significant issue of the display of medieval manuscript materials through online repositories and how this distant viewing affects participants' understanding of what they're seeing. This session will devote itself to the topic of interpretation: how repositories and manuscript projects can best set about addressing the gap between the digital and the 'real'; how tools can be utilised to render all aspects of the book or document visible to the viewer, through description or more transparent metadata.The aims of the session will be to highlight critical methodological and conceptual frameworks and make suggestions for the best way forward in our brave new digital world. Digital Classicist London & Institute of Classical Studies Seminar 2013 Friday August 9 at 16:30 in room G37, Senate House, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HU Agnes Thomas, Francesco Mambrini & Matteo Romanello (DAI, Berlin), 'Insights in the World of Thucydides: The Hellespont Project as a research environment for Digital History' ALL WELCOME The Hellespont Project aims to integrate two of the largest online collections for the study of Antiquity, the Perseus Digital Library and the Arachne archaeological database, in a dynamic digital research environment. Our case study is focused on a limited historical period, the 50 years in the history of Athens between the Persian Wars and the outburst of the Peloponnesian War (431 BCE), following the narration presented by Thucydides (1.89-118). Our goal is to create a “digital sourcebook” where the different sources (texts and images) are linked and enriched with linguistic, archaeological and historical annotation. The seminar will be followed by wine and refreshments.
