xslt functions for roman dates and numerals

Dear all I've written two XSL 2.0 functions which might be of some interest for digital medievalists. The first ("is_roman_number") checks if a given string is a correct Roman numeral or not (returning a boolean). E.g. <xsl:value-of select="locfun:is_roman_number('xvi')"/> returns "true". The second ("convert_date") converts Roman dates (you know, something like 'XII Kalendas Decembris') into a string, containing the date in modern (english) format. The function expects four parameters: 1. A string indicating the month in latin. The function is quite tolerant here. 2. A string indicating the part of the month: kalendae, nonae, idus. Again much spelling variation tolerance here. 3. A string indicating the given number of the day in Roman numerals. If your date is exactly on a fix date (eg. "kalendibus"), just write '' here. 4. A boolean for the leap year. 'true()' means 'yes, we're in a leap year'. E.g. <xsl:value-of select="locfun:convert_date('iunii','idus','III',false())"/> will return "June 11". Both functions use the xmlns:locfun="urn:local-functions" namespace and the xmlns:own_t="http://no-real-uri-here/arguments_and_document_node_variables_of_Christian_…" namespace for document node variables. You find the code file attached. You might use, edit, share it in whichever way you like! CeRch Seminar: Founders & Survivors: Tasmanian Convict Life Courses in Historical Context

All the best, Valentina Asciutti Abstract: Founders & Survivors is a multi-university and public collaborative project that is building a transnational and inter-generational data set of life courses generated from the UNESCO recognized convict records of Tasmania. This paper outlines the technical history of the project: mass digitization and archiving online of over 100,000 images; manual scholarly transcription; TEI standard XML data library based on automated and manual record matching and linkage; crowdsourcing using Google Docs to manage over 60 online volunteer genealogists; re-constitution of amalgamated life courses and record linkage; development of customized genealogical database for population and family analysis (Yggrasil); export to statistical programmes (SPSS, Stata). Three grants from the Australian Research Council have funded this work, and the outcomes have been (1) Hamish Maxwell-Stewart's nominal dataset of around 70,000 Tasmanian convicts using Deborah Oxley's transcriptions of the probation era, amplified by full transcriptions of 1 in 25 convicts and linkages to later criminal records (at the University of Tasmania); and (2) the Life Course project run by the authors which has completed life courses researched for all convicts from 91 convict shiploads, creating a reference population of 12,068 men (around 25% of the total) and 5,549 women (around 40% of the total), with another 6188 (at last count) from random ships (at the University of Melbourne). The proportion of convicts researched for life before, during and after sentence, marriage, fertility and death is around 37% of the total number of convicts for whom adequate records have survived. This sample is big enough to enable significant analysis on all-cause and cause-specific mortality; fertility; the life course effects of insult accumulation; temperament and survival; early life influences and intergenerational effects. None of this would have been possible without the combination of information technology, digitized archives, customized software and the thousands of hours of labour donated by volunteers, to the equivalent value of AUD 4 million! PhD Studentship at Calgary

I have just been granted funding for a PhD student in digital medieval literary or linguistic (OE, ME) studies, to commence September 2014 or January 2015. The student will be fully funded for four years. The "Eyes High" scholarship itself is worth $25K Cdn per year for a Canadian applicant, $30K Cdn per year for a non-Canadian. That amount will be reduced to an $8K top-up per year if the student wins, as is expected, major external funding such as a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada doctoral fellowship. The funding from the "Eyes High" scholarship would also be supplemented with funding from my own grants and/or with teaching assignments in my department, for somewhere in the area of an additional $15K per annum. The doctoral project would need to be in the general area described above, and would ideally complement or be part of my own ongoing editorial projects, especially the Online Corpus of Old English Poetry or its planned Aelfrician extension, the probable target of my next research grant application. A strong background in digital humanities work is very desirable but lack of one is not necessarily a deal-breaker for a highly-qualified candidate. Turn-around is very tight. I will need an expression of interest by 20 February in order to consider anyone as a candidate; this should include a CV and if possible transcripts of your academic record. Applicants need to have a completed Masters degree by the time of taking up the studentship. My candidate needs to be submitted to our university approvers by 10 March. Please do feel free to pass this information along to anyone (and any listservs) you think might be interested. I'm happy to answer questions about this (private mail, please, not the list) but will be travelling for part of the next week so may not be as prompt as you would like in replying. I was on the committee that put this award together and a goal is to really find a way of recognising the things in DH that are crucial to the field but not always easy to reward or otherwise recognise.
