I've taken a look at Els's doodle poll (thanks, Els!). I'd like to suggest Tuesday, September 15, 8am, or Thursday, September 17. 8am EDT (GMT -4). I have a slight preference for Tuesday, but let me know what your thoughts are. Should we ask that a representative from the early stage researchers group come? Since we are deciding roles for the board, it's probably not necessary for everyone in that group to be there, but it might be good to have one representative there. I'm cc'ing Jamie for his thoughts. Also, I would like to try a video meeting. Does anyone object? If we do a video meeting, someone would need to take minutes. Volunteers if so? REED: Hampshire collection released

The Records of Early English Drama announces the open access publication of its latest edition in the REED series: REED: Hampshire, edited by Peter Greenfield and Jane Cowling. Now available on REED Online at https://ereed.library.utoronto.ca/ and https://ereed.library.utoronto.ca/collections/hamps/ REED: Hampshire offers the largest and most varied set of medieval and renaissance records yet included in REED Online, spanning from the late 10th century to the start of the Civil War in 1642. Records range from a kingale mentioned in a 1381 coroner's report to a previously unpublished play based on Sophocles and Seneca performed at Winchester College. Hampshire's record of seasonal festivities – especially that known regionally as a 'king ale' – complements and extends the Berkshire data across the common county boundary. Winchester, Winchester College, and Southampton are major stops in a lively performance circuit including other towns, monasteries, and aristocratic households which provide abundant evidence of itinerant minstrels, players, and other performers. Collection highlights include records of the Quem Quaeritis at Winchester, the boy bishop tradition at St Swithin's Priory, a 1409 legal dispute over a St Agnes play, expenses for constructing stages and sets in the Winchester College hall, licenses to acting troupes from the Master of the Revels that name star actors like Edward Alleyn and Will Kemp, and the elaborate entertainment for Queen Elizabeth provided by the earl of Hertford at Elvetham in 1591, which appears here in its Hampshire context. Also included are Isle of Wight records of both folk customs and aristocratic entertainments. All locations are linked to the GIS provincial map of England, which now defines, for the first time, pre- and post-Reformation diocesan boundaries. As a matter of fact, in the last two decades much effort was placed in defining separate disciplinary fields, in order to canonise and validate the use of digital methodologies or public approaches in the specific subsets of the humanities. However, evidence suggests that digital and public challenges facing singular disciplines are actually common to the entire field of the humanities, thus favouring a cross-disciplinary approach rather than thematic isolation. Indeed, the impact of digitisation and public involvement offered a unique opportunity to the humanities: a window for experimentation with merged methodologies, blended sharing practices, joined representation modes, interpenetrated material research. In this process new actors, factors and agents emerged that are about to consolidate today’s landscape in the digital and public humanities, although still on the search for standards and best practices that could suit the entire field. For its inaugural volume magazén is set to examine in two semestral issues (Summer 2020 and Fall 2020) the concept of “fusions” as the very backbone of recent developments in the realm of digital and public humanities. Scholars are particularly invited to submit contributions that span from theoretical debates to methodological reflections, also comprising the examination of particular case studies. Charlotte Tupman (Exeter) Reconsidering the Roman workshop: Applying machine learning to the study of inscribing texts Fri, Aug 7, 2020, 17:30 BST Digital Classicist London Seminar 2020 Streamed live at https://youtu.be/sVUg9R13l5E This paper examines whether our understanding of lettercutting processes in the Roman world can be enhanced through combining traditional scholarship and machine learning. The pilot project applies a neural network to a dataset of images made available by the Epigraphische Datenbank Heidelberg. We investigate whether the model can learn effectively to identify and measure the layouts of inscriptions. In this paper we present the results and implications of the first stage of the project, in which we train the model to recognise text within images of varying quality, and discuss the next steps in furthering our knowledge of Roman craftsmanship.
