Estimados compañeros, Os hacemos llegar un curso de verano organizado por el Laboratorio de Humanidades Digitales de la UNED<https://linhd.uned.es/>. El curso lleva por título Creación de un proyecto en Humanidades Digitales basado en el análisis de textos: modelado y procesamiento<https://extension.uned.es/actividad/idactividad/24581> y se celebrará del 28 al 30 de junio. Puede realizarse presencialmente o en línea (en directo o en diferido), tiene una duración de 20 horas y será eminentemente práctico. La investigación en Humanidades Digitales no ha dejado de crecer en los últimos años y son cada vez más los proyectos de historiadores, filólogos, o antropólogos que utilizan la tecnología para el análisis de corpus literarios en busca de patrones, la construcción de mapas digitales interactivos para una mejor visualización de los resultados de sus investigaciones, o la geolocalización de enclaves a los que se añaden capas de información multimedia, entre otras muchas posibilidades. Los humanistas digitales tienen un futuro prometedor en un área en crecimiento en el que se requieren perfiles profesionales mixtos y flexibles, capaces de organizar y etiquetar objetos digitales; así como gestionar su visualización y preservación en un entorno digital. Sin embargo, para desarrollar la investigación en esta área se ha de disponer de ciertos conocimientos técnicos tales como los que se abordan en el curso que os presentamos. El objetivo del mismo es diseñar un proyecto de humanidades digitales, desde el modelado del dominio hasta la creación de resultados y su diseminación, haciendo uso de lenguajes de programación, técnicas de modelado y visualización provenientes del mundo de la inteligencia artificial. Comenzaremos con una aproximación al mundo de las Humanidades Digitales y las problemáticas que surgen para el análisis de textos. Después, nos acercaremos a las metodologías y técnicas para resolver esos problemas mediante el modelado semántico y la perspectiva de los datos enlazados y lenguajes de marcas. Asimismo, se presentarán nuevos paradigmas computacionales relacionados con la Inteligencia Artificial como el procesamiento de textos, la estilometría, el deep learning, etc., y su aplicación. We are looking for seminars on any aspect of the ancient or pre-colonial worlds, that address innovative digital approaches to research, teaching, dissemination or engagement. Seminars that speak to the ancient world beyond Greco-Roman antiquity are especially welcome. Seminars will be held fortnightly through June and July in the Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House, London, with the possibility for audience and speakers to be present or remote (although we hope most speakers will be physically present in London, circumstances allowing). We have a small budget to support travel for speakers within the UK. Seminar: PEACE: The Portal on Jewish Funerary Culture

Digital Classicist London seminar Ortal-Paz Saar & Berit Janssen (Utrecht) PEACE: The Portal on Jewish Funerary Culture Friday Mar 18, 2022, 17:00 GMT Streamed live at https://youtu.be/IUrKgB2JAv8 The word “Peace”—Shalom—is frequently found on funerary inscriptions marking the last resting place of Jewish people in antiquity. Often, it is the only word inscribed in Hebrew letters, inserted into an otherwise Greek or Latin epitaph. Our paper will present a new digital project titled PEACE, which stands for Portal of Epigraphy, Archaeology, Conservation and Education on Jewish Funerary Culture (https://peace.sites.uu.nl/). The portal is currently found in its pilot stage, and focuses on epigraphic data. It encompasses four epigraphical databases with different geographical scopes (primarily ancient Palestine, Italy, Germany, and Spain), ranging from the 5th century BCE to the 20th century, comprising inscriptions painted on catacomb walls as well as moulded on modern concrete. Bridging over these differences is the fact that all the partner databases use EpiDoc to encode their inscriptions. The PEACE portal allows to search all databases simultaneously, and subsequently detect patterns of historical importance within Jewish funerary culture. PEACE employs the Elasticsearch engine for searching through the different databases and visualizing the results. Search results can also be filtered, for instance according to sex of the persons mentioned on the inscription, their age, location, and language. This allows for a richer analysis of the data. The portal pilot is not without its challenges, which range from a lack of uniformity in the data to the languages employed by the inscriptions. The latter include Hebrew and Aramaic (RTL languages with no vocalization), Greek and Latin, alongside modern European languages, and some inscriptions comprise more than one language, or transliterations of one language into the alphabet of another. Despite the challenges, the epigraphy pilot of the PEACE portal shows interesting results. Queries of its 40,000 inscriptions outline fascinating patterns across time and space, from onomastic preferences to the use of specific dating formats. As more databases join the portal, such patterns will become increasingly accurate and a better picture of Jewish funerary culture and its relation with non-Jewish traditions will emerge. A collaboration between scholars at UC and Nottingham Trent University in the UK, the current project provides a test case for exploring the challenges of representing these large, complex, and delicate material objects in digital form. As the project moves into a new phase, we are exploring new ways to incorporate, compare and contrast more rolls, adding layers of historical interpretation, network analysis, and heritage science data. Dr. Hodgson will discuss how the team will combine three research streams - History, Heritage Science, and Digital Humanities - to better understand the impetus and processes behind the construction of genealogical rolls as well as the establishment of their wider socio-cultural and political importance.
