Os hacemos llegar un curso de verano organizado por el Laboratorio de Humanidades Digitales de la UNED<https://linhd.uned.es/>. El curso lleva por título Creación de un proyecto en Humanidades Digitales basado en el análisis de textos: modelado y procesamiento<https://extension.uned.es/actividad/idactividad/24581> y se celebrará del 28 al 30 de junio. Puede realizarse presencialmente o en línea (en directo o en diferido), tiene una duración de 20 horas y será eminentemente práctico.
La investigación en Humanidades Digitales no ha dejado de crecer en los últimos años y son cada vez más los proyectos de historiadores, filólogos, o antropólogos que utilizan la tecnología para el análisis de corpus literarios en busca de patrones, la construcción de mapas digitales interactivos para una mejor visualización de los resultados de sus investigaciones, o la geolocalización de enclaves a los que se añaden capas de información multimedia, entre otras muchas posibilidades.
Los humanistas digitales tienen un futuro prometedor en un área en crecimiento en el que se requieren perfiles profesionales mixtos y flexibles, capaces de organizar y etiquetar objetos digitales; así como gestionar su visualización y preservación en un entorno digital. Sin embargo, para desarrollar la investigación en esta área se ha de disponer de ciertos conocimientos técnicos tales como los que se abordan en el curso que os presentamos.
El objetivo del mismo es diseñar un proyecto de humanidades digitales, desde el modelado del dominio hasta la creación de resultados y su diseminación, haciendo uso de lenguajes de programación, técnicas de modelado y visualización provenientes del mundo de la inteligencia artificial. Comenzaremos con una aproximación al mundo de las Humanidades Digitales y las problemáticas que surgen para el análisis de textos. Después, nos acercaremos a las metodologías y técnicas para resolver esos problemas mediante el modelado semántico y la perspectiva de los datos enlazados y lenguajes de marcas. Asimismo, se presentarán nuevos paradigmas computacionales relacionados con la Inteligencia Artificial como el procesamiento de textos, la estilometría, el deep learning, etc., y su aplicación. Para finalizar, se representarán los resultados obtenidos.

Three postdoctoral positions of 2 years, renewable for up to another two years, are announced in the ERC Starting grant "Polyphonic Philosophy. Logic in the Long Twelfth Century for a New Horizon in the History of Philosophy" (PI Caterina Tarlazzi), starting on 1 September 2022 at Ca' Foscari (Venice) - Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage. The project focuses on 12th-century logical commentaries in Latin.

We are offering a workshop titled “Manuscripts as Data: A Very Brief Introduction to Digital Humanities Methods for Manuscript Studies” as part of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute 2022 (online edition) taking place on June, 6-10, 2022, which might be of interest to some members of this network.
Our intensive four-day workshop (16 hours) offers an introduction to working with medieval and early modern manuscripts in the digital context, providing an overview of the possibilities and challenges associated with applications of XML-TEI in manuscript studies. It is mainly aimed at those who are newcomers to DH methods, i.e., humanists who have a particular, manuscript-oriented project in mind and who want to learn how to bring it to a digital world. No familiarity with scripting or encoding is assumed. Previous experience in working with manuscripts is desirable (basic training in codicology, paleography, and bibliography).
We encourage everyone who is interested in working with medieval and early modern manuscripts in a digital context to apply.

Beyond the Page: Immaterial Texts in Late Medieval England

>From some curious habits by scribes of late Middle English manuscripts, I shall argue that scribes were sometimes not interested in, or were even vexed by, the material form of texts. I'll focus on the scribes' handling of page breaks. While in some ways the division of the text into pages allowed scribes to show off their own craft process, when they decorated the division of the codex into pages, following conventions without textual function, in other ways the page breaks contributed little to the text itself, and at times scribes used other methods to override the page breaks. From such examples, I shall argue that the scribes were more interested in the continuity of the text and of the reading process which continued beyond the literal limits of the page. I'll suggest that the scribes' handling of page breaks adds to the story of material texts but also challenges the focus on materiality in the study of literature, suggesting other concerns that might be part of the history of reading.

will take place in Venice, 11-15 July 2022.
The VeDPH Summer School aims at providing advanced and in-depth training
to students and scholars in theories, technologies and methods applied
to historical monuments, artifacts and texts in the interdisciplinary
field of Digital and Public Humanities, focussing on cultural,
archaeological, historical, literary, and artistic materials from
Venetian sites and cultural heritage institutions.
The Summer School will take place in historical sites and cultural
venues across Venice and its surroundings. Each day will be dedicated to
a specific academic field: history, art history, textual scholarship and
archaeology.

In collaboration with the Institute of Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE)<https://www.i-d-e.de/>, the Text+ consortium<https://www.text-plus.org/en/home/> of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)<https://www.dfg.de/en/research_funding/programmes/nfdi/index.html> invites authors to submit reviews of digital scholarly editions for the journal RIDE<https://ride.i-d-e.de>. The reviews should be based on the IDE criteria for reviewing digital editions and focus on the application of the FAIR principles for this special issue.
Cooperation and goals
Text+ has been active since 2021. The consortium is dedicated to the development of a research data infrastructure for text- and language-based materials, divided, to start with, into three data domains: lexical resources, collections, and scholarly editions. Scholarly editions are critical representations of documents from the past that are primarily used in the study of research objectives within the humanities.
A central task of the data domain “editions” is the assessment of methods and practices of the editorial process, as well as the development of recommendations for the creation, processing and publication of research data. According to the FAIR principles<https://force11.org/info/the-fair-data-principles/>, data from editions should be „Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable.“ Applying these principles to digital resources is becoming more and more important, but they are yet to be discussed in depth in the context of scholarly editions. The implementation of the FAIR principles is crucial for central aspects of working with digital editions; these include, for example, aspects of search, linking, licensing, and re-use. In order to gain a better understanding of what “FAIR” entails in the context of editions specifically and whether and how these principles can be applied to digital scholarly editions, existing practices are best described in the form of reviews. On the basis of individual case studies, reviews allow a survey of the diverse editorial landscape and can thus contribute to the development of new criteria. For this reason, Text+ has chosen to cooperate with the review journal RIDE which was first published in 2014 and has been, since then, leading in the review of digital scholarly editions. Together, Text+ and RIDE seek to further promote the discourse on best practices in the creation and publication of digital editions in general and in the application of the FAIR principles in particular.
Modalities
Interested reviewers can contact us with proposals at ride-textplus(a)i-d-e.de<mailto:ride-textplus@i-d-e.de> (name, affiliation, edition). The deadline for proposals is 17 May 2022, but we may remain open for inquiries afterwards. Publication of the volume(s) will be by ‘rolling release’.
The reviews are to be based on the catalog of criteria for digital editions<https://www.i-d-e.de/publikationen/weitereschriften/criteria-version-1-1/> developed by the IDE. A handout for evaluating the “FAIRness” of a digital edition has also been developed for Text+ editions (see below). As with all RIDE reviews, a submission consists of the review text and a factsheet, the latter based on a questionnaire to be completed by the reviewer. We accept submissions in German and English.
The editors of the first edition are Tessa Gengnagel (Cologne Center for eHumanities), Frederike Neuber (Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities) and Daniela Schulz (Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel).
FAIR in digital editions – criteria
Reviewers should address (amongst others) the following aspects regarding the application of the FAIR-principles in digital scholarly editions:
Findable. Can the edition be found via library catalogs, discovery systems, or relevant edition catalogs (e.g., the Catalogue of Digital Editions maintained by Greta Franzini<https://dig-ed-cat.acdh.oeaw.ac.at/> or the catalog by Patrick Sahle<https://www.digitale-edition.de>)? Can the data be found through disciplinary repositories or general research data repositories (including Zenodo<https://zenodo.org/>, Dariah Collection Registry<https://colreg.de.dariah.eu/colreg-ui/>, Humanities Commons<https://hcommons.org/>)? Is a persistent identifier used? How efficient is a search for the edition using a search engine?
Accessible. Is the edition freely accessible for any user, or are there access restrictions? Which parts of the edition are accessible (presentation layer, data layer)? Have global aspects of accessibility been taken into account, e.g. by allowing language selection? What about web accessibility and user friendliness of the edition?
Interoperable. Is the (primary) data recorded in a standardized and widely used format (e.g. according to TEI and its subsets or specific customizations such as the DTABf) which would allow for the integration of the data into larger corpora or the use of specific software solutions? Is the data on which the edition is based accessible via technical interfaces? Does the edition offer special APIs? Does it itself aggregate data via interfaces from other resources (e.g. as part of IIIF)?
Reusable. Is the edition data accessible, and if so, how (individual download, aggregate download, repository, API)? What are the licenses for the edition data? Do they allow any subsequent use at all? Are the data sets and their creation, processing and modeling documented in such a way that third parties can work with them?

DESCRIPTION
LT4HALA 2022 is a one-day workshop that seeks to bring together scholars who are developing and/or are using Language Technologies (LTs) for historically attested languages, so to foster cross-fertilization between the Computational Linguistics community and the areas in the Humanities dealing with historical linguistic data, e.g. historians, philologists, linguists, archaeologists and literary scholars. LT4HALA 2022 follows LT4HALA 2020 that was organized in the context of LREC 2020 (proceedings: https://aclanthology.org/volumes/2020.lt4hala-1/). Despite the current availability of large collections of digitized texts written in historical languages, such interdisciplinary collaboration is still hampered by the limited availability of annotated linguistic resources for most of the historical languages. Creating such resources is a challenge and an obligation for LTs, both to support historical linguistic research with the most updated technologies and to preserve those precious linguistic data that survived from past times.
Relevant topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
* handling spelling variation;

detection and correction of OCR errors;

creation and annotation of digital resources;

deciphering;

morphological/syntactic/semantic analysis of textual data;

adaptation of tools to address diachronic/diatopic/diastratic variation in texts;

For the workshop, we invite papers of different types such as experimental papers, reproduction papers, resource papers, position papers, survey papers. Both long and short papers describing original and unpublished work are welcome. Long papers should deal with substantial completed research and/or report on the development of new methodologies. They may consist of up to 8 pages of content plus 2 pages of references. Short papers are instead appropriate for reporting on works in progress or for describing a singular tool or project. They may consist of up to 4 pages of content plus 2 pages of references.
We encourage the authors of papers reporting experimental results to make their results reproducible and the entire process of analysis replicable, by making the data and the tools they used available. The form of the presentation may be oral or poster, whereas in the proceedings there is no difference between the accepted papers. The submission is NOT anonymous. The LREC official format is requested. Each paper will be reviewed but three independent reviewers.
As for EvaLatin and EvaHan, participants will be required to submit a technical report for each task (with all the related sub-tasks) they took part in. Technical reports will be included in the proceedings as short papers: the maximum length is 4 pages (excluding references) and they should follow the LREC official format. Reports will receive a light review (we will check for the correctness of the format, the exactness of results and ranking, and overall exposition). All participants will have the possibility to present their results at the workshop: we will allocate an oral session and a poster session fully devoted to the shared tasks in the afternoon.

Identify, Describe and Share your LRs!
* Describing your LRs in the LRE Map is now a normal practice in the submission procedure of LREC (introduced in 2010 and adopted by other conferences). To continue the efforts initiated at LREC 2014 about “Sharing LRs” (data, tools, web-services, etc.), authors will have the possibility, when submitting a paper, to upload LRs in a special LREC repository. This effort of sharing LRs, linked to the LRE Map for their description, may become a new “regular” feature for conferences in our field, thus contributing to creating a common repository where everyone can deposit and share data.
* As scientific work requires accurate citations of referenced work so as to allow the community to understand the whole context and also replicate the experiments conducted by other researchers, LREC 2022 endorses the need to uniquely Identify LRs through the use of the International Standard Language Resource Number (ISLRN, www.islrn.org<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.islrn.…>), a Persistent Unique Identifier to be assigned to each Language Resource. The assignment of ISLRNs to LRs cited in LREC papers will be offered at submission time.
