Call for Papers: Workshop on Extracting Heterogeneous Reference Data (Frankfurt/Hybrid, 15/16 May 2023)

Recognition and parsing of references to literature is a long-standing problem in the processing of historical or scholarly texts in the domains of the humanities, law and the social sciences. We invite contributions to a hybrid workshop addressing what the current state of the art in reference extraction is and how recent technological advances like large language models may help improve it.
The workshop will be held in a hybrid format on 15/16 May 2023 at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory, Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
We are calling for contributions, to the following and related topics/questions:
· Problem/task definition
* What are use cases and current projects?
* What precise (sub-)tasks can we identify?
· State of the art
* What is the performance of current approaches?
* How can the newly emerging technologies be leveraged to improve upon existing solutions?
· Pooling of tools and resources
* What training corpora are available? Which are needed, and in what format?
* What workflows/toolchains do we need?
· Future work
* What infrastructure is required/available?
* Should we establish a Shared Task? Write a whitepaper? Hold a hackathon?
Please also consider contributing if you have suitable training data or if you are working on related tasks like preparation of datasets, linking of references, etc.

Missions
- Développer un référentiel pour les manuscrits de l'Orient chrétien et byzantin
- Mettre en œuvre l'interopérabilité entre les bases de l'équipe de recherche et au sein d'un réseau de partenaires national et international
Activités
1/ Assister les responsables dans le développement et le suivi technique des bases de données :
- Concevoir des adaptations fonctionnelles et techniques nécessaires à l'évolution des bases de données
- Participer à la rédaction de cahiers des charges
- Suivre les phases de développement et de mises à jour des bases de données et de leurs applications, en coordination avec les techniciens et développeurs
- Assurer une veille technique sur les nouveaux outils, nouveaux langages, nouveaux processus disponibles dans le domaine des humanités numériques
2/ Activité 2 : Développer l'interopérabilité afin d'aboutir à un référentiel pour le domaine des textes et manuscrits de l'Orient méditerranéen (en particulier grec, syriaque et arabe) :
- Réaliser un état des lieux des référentiels (en particulier personnes et cotes) des bases de l'équipe (Pinakes, RIMG, mss.catalog, e-ktobe) et d'autres partenaires (réseau Biblissima+, réseau Diktyon, réseau Syriaca, etc.), ainsi que de l'interopérabilité existante
- Mettre en place (ou améliorer lorsqu'elle existe) l'interopérabilité entre les bases de l'équipe et avec les autres partenaires
- Coordonner et mettre en œuvre l'alignement pérenne des données et des listes d'autorités
3/ Activité 3 : Collaborer à la révision et à la saisie dans les bases des données
- Dépouiller et traiter de l'information scientifique (catalogues, publications, fichiers, manuscrits)
- Saisir les données résultantes dans une ou plusieurs bases de données de l'équipe
- Participer à la formation des vacataires ou stagiaires travaillant sur les bases de données
4/ Activité 4 : Participer à la coordination et au pilotage de projets incluant des partenaires à l'international (mise en réseau, interopérabilité, humanités numériques)
- Participer à la coordination avec les réseaux internationaux auxquels les bases de données sont liées (rédaction de courriers, organisation de réunions, etc.)
- Participer au développement des réseaux auxquels sont intégrées les bases de l'équipe et à leur élargissement (identification de nouveaux partenaires, prise de contacts, présentation des projets dans des manifestations scientifiques, etc.)
- Participer à l'élaboration des demandes de financements nécessaires au développement ou à l'alimentation des différentes bases de données, et au développement des réseaux

Contexte de travail
L'IRHT est une unité propre de recherche du CNRS (UPR 841) qui se consacre à l'étude du manuscrit médiéval. La section grecque et de l'Orient chrétien étudie plus particulièrement les textes et manuscrits en langue grecque, syriaque, copte et arabe. Elle reconnue pour sa compétence dans l'élaboration d'instruments de travail dans ce domaine.
L'agent(e) travaillera en étroite collaboration avec les membres de la Section grecque et Orient, sous la direction du responsable d'équipe. Il/Elle sera en lien étroit et régulier avec le Pôle numérique de l'IRHT. Il/Elle sera également amené à travailler avec les autres équipes de l'Equipex Biblissima et avec les partenaires internationaux impliqués dans les différents projets de l'équipe.
L'agent(e) pourra être amené dans l'exercice de ses fonctions à faire des déplacements à Orléans (site où se trouve le Pôle numérique de l'IRHT), mais aussi à l'étranger, pour présenter le projet ou discuter avec des partenaires.
Le contrat, à temps plein, est de un an renouvelable.

These open-access editions have made it possible for instructors, students, and researchers alike to teach, learn, and advance scholarship on medieval British literature wherever they are in the world. An open-access digital collection, however, is only as accessible and useful as its website and user interface allow it to be – and over the past few years, it has become clear that both the METS website and its approach to digital editions need an update. Feedback from users like you will be pivotal in reimagining both with the needs of our diverse user base in mind.

ABSTRACT
In the framework of the ERC-2021-StG project “Polyphonic Philosophy: Logic in the Long Twelfth Century (c. 1070-1220) for a New Horizon in the History of Philosophy”, a digital resource will be developed dealing with manuscripts and commentaries on Porphyry’s Isagoge, Aristotle’s Categories and De interpretatione, and Boethius’s De divisione and De differentiis topicis. In particular, the product will have two main and intertwined components: a digital catalogue of manuscripts, and a scholarly digital edition of certain texts, selected from the manuscripts. Modelling will be followed by the development of the infrastructure and data management. Later on, a system and interface to visualise data will be developed in order to consult data, analyse data through searching and indexing, and to produce the final publication. In this context, the research fellow will have to develop a data model for describing and enhancing data concerning digital textual criticism and the analysis of manuscripts. In particular, the data model will be based on web technologies such as XML/TEI, IIIF, RDF and Linked Open Data.The research fellow will work in close contact with other team members, including experts in codicology and paleography, Latin textual criticism, and history of mediaeval philosophy. He or she will be responsible for the digital and IT aspects of the product meta-analysis thereof. He or she will also collaborate with IT-staff for the most technical aspects, and with scholars from the Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities (VeDPH). Proven expertise in digital humanities is therefore required.

The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Cologne is seeking to appoint a research assistant in the framework of the project “Creating a Sustainable Digital Infrastructure for Research-Based Teaching in Byzantine Studies” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (more information on the project here<https://ifa.phil-fak.uni-koeln.de/forschung/byzantinistik-und-neugriechisch…>). The successful candidate will work towards obtaining a PhD degree. The position is to be filled part time (65 %, 25,89 hours per week) from April 1st, 2023, for three years.
