A CALL FOR PAPERS
Leeds International Medieval Congress, 1-4 July 2024

Medieval Baptismal Fonts: Artistic and Cultural Responses to Crisis in the Middle Ages
Crisis changed communities, perspectives and introduced new ways of interpreting and viewing the world. The liturgical
vessel, known as a baptismal font, reflect not just liturgical or religious changes but also societal, cultural, judicial, political and economic disruptions in their designs, ornamentation, production and inscriptions. Some of the most extraordinary fonts
are often overlooked as they are still located within communities today, having acquired an intimate relationship in the memory and identity of communities.
The planned session at IMC 2024 hopes to attract papers which seek to expose some of these major ‘crisis’ or pivotal
turning points that have shaped and transformed these liturgical vessels from the Early to the Late Middle Ages.
If you are interested in presenting a 20-min paper please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words with a CV. Send to Harriet Sonne de Torrens,
harriet.sonne@utoronto.ca by September 20, 2023.
