Hello again,
My apologies for posting again on this thread. I think issues of migration should be key to digital humanities as one of its founding values (at least to me) is its potential for enhancing access and representation.
From the Guardian today, this post by Gary Younge I thought members of this list would be interested in reading: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/mar/24/migrants-leave-home-future-past-borders
All the best,

Hi all,Merisa, I wish you the best of luck, I can totally relate. Me and a Mexican colleague were stopped by Dutch immigration police in Amsterdam recently because he was not carrying his return ticket *from the UK* to Mexico. They wanted proof he would not stay in Europe. He showed his return ticket on his mobile phone (even getting online to fetch it proved a challenge) and even then he was detained and me with him. They did not believe I was a British citizen because I did "not look British" and hence the suggestion was my passport was false. Really. (Insert paranoia here about Google mail metadata being archived as we speak).Anyway, I thought I'd share this link for a job as a lecturer in "World Literatures/Postcolonial Studies" (sic).
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ATT938/lecturer-in-world-literatures-postcolonial-studies-10-month/
Please note it's only for ten months (!), and please note how it's very clearly indicated on the job advert itself that
"Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme."This rules out most non-EU PhD and students and post-docs currently in the UK, let alone non-EU academics from applying. Given the academic discipline, I find this restriction (and the university's inability to negotiate entry clearance for the right academic) truly worrying. But only a few people care, or feel free/safe to express their concern about things like these. All the best,ErnestoDr Ernesto Priego

I am returning to the UK on Monday for three months to study at Cambridge and can already anticipate the ridiculous line of questioning I will receive because I purchased a one way ticket to save money. My last name (Martinez) always brings up flags and it’s nearly impossible to convince them that I’m not married because I don’t “look Mexican.” Well, I’m American. Even when I show residence permits, discuss my previous work as a Tier 4, and try to reason with them that I have no plans to illegally abscond in the UK, I still am put through the ringer. Thank you for sharing. On Mar 19, 2015, at 1:11 PM, Ernesto Priego <efpriego@gmail.com> wrote:_______________________________________________Hi all,
