Hi all,
This is an interesting discussion.
It's going to be hard to build a case for joining ADHO as a Constituent Organisation (CO) in abstract (i.e. without a specific proposal on the table) because the abstract reasons for doing it depend a lot on the details of the proposal. This is (and was) true of any potential CO. So, for example, the Canadian Society joined because it seemed like a good idea, after people had worked out what would be involved in joining.
There are very few abstract reasons for joining a group that would withstand a bad proposal.
You can make an abstract case against joining an organisation--or rather a positive case for maintaining independence or avoiding surrendering it--because that might well touch on some core values. I.e. you might think that a society or group is simply better doing things on its own.
So rather than say why I think we should join ADHO as a CO--something I don't actually think, since I don't know what the conditions would be--I'll work instead on coming up with some suggestions for why it is, in my opinion, worth exploring.
Finally, there is in all of these things an intangible aspect. I'm a Northern, Middle Aged, White, Male, and Tenured Full Professor who has been fortunate enough to be active in DH since its modern incarnation with the rise of the internet. So for me, organisations like ADHO don't really exist outside of "us": I've seen them arise and I'm relatively convinced that they are amenable to change.
Unfortunately, that is also the definition of privilege.
More anon.

Dear Northern friend,
I love your sense of humour. But the truth beyond jokes is that ADHO seemed to have failed to build an equal, diverse and inclusive Digital Humanities community.
Try harder!
