Dear Dan, Barbara, and all,

centerNet is, in fact, about to kick off an initiative focused on the starting up of DH centers that Lynne Siemens will be coordinating and I will be participating in.

Our first step is collecting the names of people who are interested in this subject, both from GO::DH and elsewhere, and getting into a focused conversation with them that will take place over email and Skype.  We'll also be gathering and sharing various documentary resources for reference, a collection that we hope the group will ultimately contribute to.

We are very aware, though, that there is no one solution that will be right for everyone and that starting centers in countries where the digital humanities as a field is not yet highly visible poses yet another set of challenges.

We'll be contacting all of the people who have written to me offlist. If you have not yet done so but are interested in being part of this conversation, please write to me or Lynne ( siemensl@uvic.ca) offlist.

Best,
Neil

If I might say, I think Barbara's suggestion is along the lines of how we thought the list might originally work: i.e. that people discover some common interest they can work on here. Once they have had a little time for people from other areas and regions to discover more about it and join if it interests them, we can give them space, listservs, and other resources to establish a working group which we'd certainly it is encourage to report back to the general list regularly so that others might discover it.

"How to set up a regional/national DH centre/society" seems to me to be an almost textbook example of a subject for this model: people are going to want to hear about this perennially. Perhaps Centrenet could cooperate with GO::DH to liaise regularly about this here?

Dear Neil,

As you know a similar discussion is happening in Humanist, however, I am
very interested in the subject since I am drafting such a proposal. I
would be useful to have a discussion as part of this list or, if this is
of no interest to people who live in countries where this stage of DH
has already happen. We could set up a subgroup focusing on the topic.
Of your expertise on this subject is an excellent starting point, but I
also would like to hear about particular issues in countries with a
different kind of infrastructure where there are few grants or none at
all and where governments might not have this subject very high on the
agenda.

What do others think?

Best,

BB

I would be happy to speak off list with Gurpreet and anyone else who
is thinking about setting up a dh center or institute, especially
those who are trying to do so beyond North America.
