Hello all, I would like to thank all participants (we are a couple short of 200) for the great generosity they have shown in sharing software, techniques, and examples, on this list in its short life. This is exactly what I'd been hoping would happen, and I am pleased to see the very generous participation we have had. We are testing the website right now and with some luck will have it up in the next couple of weeks. This will allow us to build a FAQ and begin to formalise our collective experience. If you have tools, software, or techniques that you are willing to describe formally, may I suggest the forthcoming Digital Medievalist Journal? Full text searching and Medieval languages

Here's some more detail on full-text searching using Lucene, which I promised several weeks ago. I've tried to focus on the aspects relevant to digital medievalists. Links to code are at the end. The Lucene FAQ provides technical detail on object models and APIs more accurately and succinctly than I probably could: http://lucene.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/faq/faqmanager.cgi First, here's a demo version of our Lucene-based search engine working on a collection of Classical Latin: http://vermont.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/searchresults.jsp?q=amo&target=la Lucene runs in two modes: indexing and searching. The indexing phase takes a set of "documents", such as a list of web pages or a directory of text files. This happens "off-line", every day or so. The searching phase occurs when someone types in a query. Lucene consults the index files and returns a list of documents that match the query. Order of Search Results By default, Lucene ranks matching documents using the following formula: the percentage of terms in the document that were search terms. This tends to favor short documents. It looks like it's possible to specify a sort order at index-time, but I haven't experimented with that feature yet. Lemmatization One factor that is very important for full-text searching languages like Latin, Old English, and Old Norse is word inflections. You need to be able to connect "amo" with "amabitur" and "amantes". We have approached this problem by caching a morphological analysis of every word that appears in the language corpus. The result is a mapping of inflected forms to dictionary lemmas. There are several ways to use this linguistic data, but the most effective (I've found) is to index the documents in their original, inflected form, and expand the query. In other words, if someone searches for the string "amo", the search wrapper program first lemmatizes the query ("amo#1"), then gathers all the known inflected forms of "amo#1" and joins them into one new query. You can see the effective query at the bottom of the search results page linked to above. The query expansion approach turns out to be very efficient. One not-terribly- fast desktop can, in one query, search for every form of three Greek verbs and return results within seconds. Homonyms are a problem, but I've found that they are fairly easy to weed out from looking at search results. Linguistic Data for Old English? I currently have inflected form-lemma mappings for Latin. I am in contact with some folks at UCLA who have made great progress working on morphological analysis for Old Norse. Does anyone know of other resources for that language? Finally, does anyone have a resource of this sort for Old English? It seems like the data could be extracted from the parsed corpora of OE, but I don't know if the (rather restrictive) licenses would cover that sort of use. Proposal: A Medieval Google Is there any interest in a general search engine for web-accessible medieval texts? If there were a list of URLs to indexable pages (provided by OAI or something even simpler), it would just be a matter of occasionally indexing them. The ability to search all surviving Old English probably exists for CDROMs and private databases, but is it available freely and publicly? We've got lots of CDs purchased in the '90s on our shelves, that are now unusable due to deterioration of the media or obsoleteness of the platform. Anything that depends on current browsers will suffer the same fate before many more of us have tenure. An online source, with institutional backing that ensures it will stay online and be maintained as technology changes, is much to be prefered. I'd be willing to sacrifice a lot of functionality for the sake of permanence, since the functionality will evaporate anyway with the next generation of browsers. The ongoing institutional support has to be sufficient to re-engineer the project from time to time to keep it working with new browsers and other tools as yet unimagined, which is no small commitment. It makes sense therefore to avoid doing one-off development and instead develop standard tools and protocols for presenting these projects. Hello all, Sorry about the three messages with attachments (please don't open them). I've now set the controls of the list so that no attachments will be distributed. This should stop the danger of viruses being passed around. I am not in Lethbridge and so can't double check, but I believe we may still get virus messages passed on if the body of the e-mail contains plain text; but they will be send without the offending attachment. If for some reason you need to post an example or would like to send an attachment, the correct etiquette is to put it on a web page somewhere and send a link. But everybody sending legitimate information thus far has done that. You can, if your license allows, and you have the facilities and staff time to set it up and figure out which CDs are worth treating this way (you probably don't have the capacity to do it for every back-of-the-book cd); but it still doesn't solve the problem of CDs that require a particular client software to run on the workstation, or that only work with Netscape 3.0 ... Standards will certainly help; but I suspect that projects with lots of interactivity and all the bells and whistles will still need to be tweaked as new generations of browsers come along, no matter how carefully they attempt to comply with current standards. I am sorry to have to say this, but why do people assume that because a book is in electronic format it should be free? I find it very strange than even those familiar with the work that goes into electronic publications would suggest that it should be free of charge. The site about Open Access referred to by Klaus is clearly intended for journals and similar publications, not for works as the Exeter CD. Indeed, I cannot imagine approaching Andy Orchard, for example, and saying, "I always wanted to buy _Pride and Prodigies_, but it is too expensive, could I have it for free?" This is the kind of publication we are talking about, not articles in journals; but incredibly complex publications that, more often than not, require the cooperation of a team of people. Those who think that publishing on the internet is free should take into account costs such as maintenance and upgrading. Someone has to care for the texts on the internet for these to remain available. In some cases, without university support, a private individual will even have to pay for the space on the internet. Of course we all want more access to primary materials and libraries are doing a good job digitizing their books, making them available and maintaining the sites. We should be happy that we can count on this and stop trying to get everything for free. Just a note that the Toronto Dictionary of Old English Complete Corpus is available for free from the Oxford Text Archive. As is the York-Toronto-Helsinki parsed corpus of Old English prose.
