The Digital Medievalist project invites participants for two sessions at the 2006 International Congress on Medievalist Studies in Kalamazoo: Digital publication (Digital medievalist) * Paper and/or abstract submissions are invited on the topic of digital publication. We are looking in particular for discussion of tools, processes, and/or best practices, but will consider other approaches to the topic (e.g. the economics of running a wiki or commons?). What every digital medievalist should know (Digital medievalist) * Paper and/or abstract submissions are invited on the topic of basic skills and training for digital projects in medieval studies. What should medievalists know before they begin a new project? Currently this lists calls for papers (if you have one that is not listed, please consider adding it: it is not hard and we can help if you need it). While some presentations may deal in part with tools or initiatives for developers, the focus is really on the user. Are there factors of layout and design that make it easier for the user to access complex data? What tools can we provide that facilitate the user's experience with an ancient text? In what ways can we yet exploit the new media to enhance the interaction of the reader with a textual tradition? Proposals for THE MEDIEVAL IN MOTION: Neomedievalism in Film, Television, and Video Games (An Anthology of Critical & Pedagogical Analysis) I am soliciting proposal for essays (or completed essays) concerning the representation of the medieval period in computer, video, and console gaming. While the anthology is organized around the idea of "neomedievalism" (defined below), contributors are encouraged to theorize the relationship of the medieval / medievalisms to gaming in all its permutations. Additionally, although it is not a widely-known fact, the video game industry outgrossed Hollywood last year in terms of domestic sales, and many students' first taste of the medieval period comes through the prism of video and console games. Thus, computer and console games are an important area for pedagogical reflection as well. Possibilities include: * Analysis of specific games (Diablo, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege, EverQuest, Fable, Stronghold, Medieval Total War, Age of Kings, Civilization, Warcraft-World of Warcraft) * Analysis of particular genres: First Person Shooters (FPS), Real-Time Strategy (RTS), Role-Playing Games (RPG), Massively-Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG), Turn-Based Strategy (TBS), Strategy, Stealth, Horror, Adventure, Action * Analysis of different platforms: PC, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, N64 * Chronological and technological development of games (Warcraft or the Final Fantasy series) * Online Guilds and Medieval(ish) Communities in MMORPGs * Marginality and liminality in game world and level construction * Old-school medievalism: text based games to Dungeons and Dragons * Representations of gender, race, age, ethnicity, * Representations of alternative species, aliens, and "otherness" * Representations of medieval warfare, technology, religion, social structure, and culture Section Editor for Video Games: Daniel T. I think Abdullah and James are talking about two extremes of the question I was asking. Before posting, I took a look around and saw *graduate* humanities courses on how to use word and frontpage (which seems to me to be a misuse of resources) and on quite detailed aspects of advanced HumCom. But what prompted the question was the sense that a conceptual, transferable understanding of things like markup, networking, database design and the like might now be as necessary as research methods are now thought to be in many places. So many medievalists are now proposing digital projects of one kind or another. How one thinks about a new project depends to a large extent on what one already understands the possibilities to be. Since (unlike research methods) a conceptual understanding of how the magic box works is not something one can necessarily expect to pick up in the department by osmosis, my question is really whether a conceptual overview might not be increasingly essential. The focus might be different that what a CompSci or IT department would offer, since we don't need to turn everybody into a programmer; but it would be nice if more in our field had a realistic understanding of what options are available as they plan new projects. Almost every university in the UK has some provision for IT training should students require it. Even at the University of Manchester where you are students can take courses via the IT Services: http://www.itservices.manchester.ac.uk/trainingcourses/ Surely what you should be doing on any course which requires basic IT skills (or heaven forfend more advanced skills!) is stating this as a prerequisite and directing students to the IT Services to receive training in these skills. If teaching a course (say on use of XML for producing critical editions or general text encoding) I don't think that we should feel any compunction in listing basic familiarity with HTML as a prerequisite, as long as students have access to training in that area. (I'm not suggesting you say they must have taken specific course X, simply that they are aware that it is a prerequisite and so they should have learnt it somewhere.) It just seems to be an inefficient waste of resources for us to duplicate training that is already available to most students. Great, offer topics which use a higher level of technology to drive the learning process, but where it isn't the end in itself (teaching palaeography on computer is a good example of this). If increasingly all the interesting courses list 'At least basic computer literacy' as a prerequisite then students will start to make sure they have these skills. New electronic editions at the Ecole des chartes

The Ecole nationale des Chartes (Paris, France) has just released a few new documents on its website ELEC, the free online editions of the Ecole des Chartes (http://elec.enc.sorbonne.fr). The Obituary of Saint-Mont (http://elec.enc.sorbonne.fr/obituairesaintmont/). Ms. Marie-José Gasse-Grandjean, researcher at the University of Burgundy, publishes the first critical edition of this manuscript, along with the document itself digitized by Metz public library (médiathèque du Pontiffroy). The obituary, which has been dated 1406, was written for Guillaume de la Perche, prior of Saint-Mont, in order to list the names of all monastery benefactors and to celebrate their memory. This nice "book of practice", not quite a «*nécrologe* », nor a calendar nor a «censier» (liber censuum), is a unique source of information on everyday life among a small monastic community depending on the Abbey of Remiremont. The Formulary of Odart Morchesne (established according the manuscript ms BnF fr. 5024) (http://elec.enc.sorbonne.fr/morchesne/). This edition, prepared by Mr. Olivier Guyotjeannin, professor at the École des chartes, and Mr. Serge Lusignan, professor at the University of Montreal, with the help of students of the Ecole des Chartes, contains about 270 models of acts which were useful for notaries and secretaries working for the King of France in the XVth century. This handbook is remarkable because the acts were annnotated by the author himself. The richness of the vocabulary is also outstanding. This is why the École des chartes will publish this document twice : there will be a print version (to be published in the collection Mémoires et documents de l’École des chartes) more convenient for reading and an electronic version allowing to access and search the text. The Language of Acts, proceedings of the XIth International congress of diplomatics Troyes, Sept. 11-13, 2003 (http://elec.enc.sorbonne.fr/sommaire163.html). The eleventh plenary session of the International Commission of diplomatics was organized by the École des chartes. The various workshops focused on the language of acts, a topic which had emerged after a survey done by the École des chartes research center “History, mémory, heritage” (EA 3624). Papers are published on the Website as soon as Mr. Olivier Guyotjeannin receives them. Digital cartularies of the region Ile-de-France (http://elec.enc.sorbonne.fr/cartulaires/) The library of the École des chartes has a collection of early XXth century editions of cartularies of the region Ile-de-France which surrounds Paris. This digitization project, supported by the French Ministry of Education, has three aims: *to provide a digital facsimile of these rare editions which are not available in most libraries *to allow browsing through full-text acts and indexes and to provide a critical presentation of the edition (critical apparatus by the students of the Ecole des Chartes under the direction of Olivier Guyotjeannin) *to enhance digitization by providing access and search tools linking text and images, by creating tables for browsing, by allowing full-text search and the creation of personal data files.
