I would appreciate getting a daily compiled digest from assorted humanities computing lists. Hey all, I'd like to point to us toward what someone in biblical studies has done: http://biblioblog.net/ The site is mostly oriented toward blogs, hence the name, (btw, not enough of you have good blogs out there. Neither do I.) but if y ou scroll down the left menu you'll also note a "Lists/Discussions" heading that does post some messages from email lists in the field. I note though that at least the ones for today are all from yahoo groups email lists rather than university based lists, so that might present a problem in setting up the system. But since I have faith in medievalists and our use of technology I believe we could find a way to adapt this to Dan's proposal. A proposal

Hi all, I have a question I'd like to run before the list: This morning I threw out the idea of setting up a humanities computing digest: that is to say a list that digests the traffic on important Hum Comp lists once a day but otherwise carries no traffic. Talking about it later with somebody, they suggested to me that 1 digest message each day would not be an unreasonable burden on a list like DM. Is this something people would appreciate? What I'm thinking is a list that simply subscribes to digital classicist, humanist, the junicode list, and I don't know what else, and is configured to send out a single digest message per day. If we subscribed dm-l to it as well, we would all receive this one message every day. If the goal was to add a digesting feature to dm-l, I would set the dm-l subscription to "reject postings" so that our postings would not be duplicated in the digest, and set the other lists to "nomail" so they wouldn't receive it. Since many of us are subscribers to several of these lists, there would be some duplication in individual mail boxes. The other option is to set up a separate digest and leave it at that. EU copyright & electronic publication

Hi All, I'm wondering if anyone on the list can help me figure out some issues having to do with the copyright dates that apply to publications in the EU. Let's say that I've found an edition of a medieval text published in an EU member country in 1973, the author is alive, and I want to publish it on my website. How do I figure out if this is under copyright protection or in the public domain? Referring to the 1993 EU copyright law (http://europa.eu.int/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi!celexapi!prod!CELEXnumdo…) the critical points are: Article 5 Critical and scientific publications Member States may protect critical and scientific publications of works which have come into the public domain. The maximum term of protection of such rights shall be 30 years from the time when the publication was first lawfully published. If this is the law, then any edition published before 1975 (even if the author is alive) is fair game. However, Article 1, point 1 says this: 1. The rights of an author of a literary or artistic work within the meaning of Article 2 of the Berne Convention shall run for the life of the author and for 70 years after his death, irrespective of the date when the work is lawfully made available to the public. (The Berne Convention defines literary or artistic work as "every production in the literary, scientific and artistic domain, whatever may be the mode or form of its expression" - which is pretty broad ( http://www.law.cornell.edu/treaties/berne/2.html). Translations, adaptations, and arrangements count, as do encyclopedias & anthologies.) So how do I decide if the edition in my hand falls under Article 1 or Article 5? Is it pretty straightforward (any edition of a public domain text falls under Article 5), or is there some ambiguity? I fear the question comes down to, exactly how much do you have to do to a public domain text (Article 5) before it becomes a new original text (Article 1)? What about critical apparatus? Editorial introductions? Is it possible for different parts of the same book to fall under different copyright protections (the edited text vs. the apparatus and introductions)? Questions about Junicode

Hi Peter and all fellow digivalists, I've got a couple of questions about Junicode, I'm posting here on DM-L as I think others might be interested in your answers. Thanks in advance. 1. I casually noticed that a new version is out AND that there is an announce mailing list: perhaps announcements of new releases could also be forwarded to dm-l? I subscribed to the announcement ml, but it could be useful for those on this list who haven't subscribed (yet). 2. Installation under Linux: the instructions are very clear, but I noticed that there is a file (/etc/defoma/hints/ttf-junicode.hints) in my installation not included in the zip archive, is this file created using the "fc-cache junicode" command? Doesn't seem the case at first look. 3. I'm very glad to see that Junicode is slowly but surely becoming a fully MUFI compliant font, but what about characters not yet in MUFI? what's the best way to ask for their inclusion? filing a feature request to MUFI first (and putting you in CC:)? or you'd be glad to consider it first? 4. I really like the (oldish) Beowulf-1 font, any plans to revamp it or include it inside Junicode's PUA (I would settle with that)? Hope this request doesn't sound too weird :) Again on Junicode under Linux: Debian offers excellent support, the latest version is already available as a standard DEB package (unstable branch); for RPM based distros I built an RPM package which has been accepted in the Mandriva contrib repository, but it needs to be updated to the latest version (hence question n. 2). The cited EU copyright directive (NOT: law) is referring to works fallen already in the public domain. Short information on the EU "publication right": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Publication_right German law knows an addional right for critical editions with a 25 year term after publication. This is referring to the consolidated text and not-copyrighted parts like critical apparatus. According to the common law "sweat of the brow" theory it seems impossible to find a modern scholarly edition which is not copyrighted (beside of the mentioned protection by the EU "publication right" or the German protection for critical editions) . I do not accept the theory that it would be an incentive for making editions if other scholars are not allowed to make fair use of an other edition. As an OPEN ACCESS advocate I have formulated my request for OPEN ACCESS to scholarly editions in German in the Vienna conference papers "Vom Nutzen des Edierens".
