Digital incunabula

I was going through my electronic editions the other day, and was surprised how many I had--some quite old fashioned looking now, admittedly--from 1997~1999. Many of these are now out of "print" and, I would guess, unlikely to be "reprinted" in their original form due to subsequent changes in technology. In some cases, copies are likely to be found in libraries around the world, so preservation for those is probably less of an issue. But some of the really early html/flash/etc ones in my collection were far more informally published. In some cases, I just have a disk from the author. The editions I have are internet age incunabula and are not yet obsolete from an operating system perspective. But of course editions and digital projects go back much farther--hypercard, dos, unix programmes, etc. Does anybody know if anywhere is actively collecting/preserving this kind of material? Obviously the Oxford Text Archive does collect texts--but in the pre-internet and early SGML days, you also had information machines where content was very closely associated with software (for a discussion of one famous case see: http://www.mun.ca/mst/heroicage/issues/7/ecolumn.html). -d

Digital MGH

Hi all, a couple of weeks ago I promised to enter a project description of the dMGH into the dm-l wiki. Finally, I managed to create a short page: <http://sql.uleth.ca/dmorgwiki/index.php/DMGH_%28digital_Monumenta_Germaniae…> (It's linked to from the "Projects"-page.) This is roughly a translation of our starting page at <http://www.dmgh.de>, which unfortunately is only available in German (as is our whole project site so far, but most of our texts are Latin anyway ;-) ). But note that it's not meant to be a literal translation. Usually I would not announce changes to the wiki on the list, but as the subject has already been on the list a few weeks ago, I thought this was appropriate. Also, this is meant to be an invitation -- especially for native English speakers -- to correct any obvious mistakes and any awkward phrases or word positions. I'm not sure when we are going to be able to present an internationalized version of the dMGH, so this page will probably serve as the major English reference to the dMGH for quite some time. * Apologies for cross-posting * =========================================================== CLiP 2006 NOW OPEN FOR EARLY REGISTRATION The 7th Computers, Literature and Philology (CLiP) conference: 'Literatures, Languages and Cultural Heritage in a digital world' Centre for Computing in the Humanities, King's College London, UK Thursday 29 June - Saturday 1 July 2006 http://www.cch.kcl.ac.uk/clip2006/ =========================================================== ABOUT CLiP The international Computers, Literature and Philology (CLiP) conference has taken place at a variety of European universities since the first conference in 1998. The initiative for the first seminar was taken by literary scholars who were not only aware of the importance of new technologies for the humanities, but also of what the humanities had contributed to the creation of digital culture in general and to the content of the Internet in particular. This year the host organization will be the Centre for Computing in the Humanities (CCH), King's College London, UK. The international Computers, Literature and Philology (CLiP) conference focuses on the integration of Philology and Information Technology relevant to humanities computing communities involved in the study of Romance languages. The academic issues and projects are approached from a multicultural European perspective, so as to foment international collaboration in research and teaching. This conference can best be seen as a three-day seminar, in that there are no parallel sessions, there is as coherent an academic focus as possible and the participation of young scholars is actively encouraged.
