Version 0.7 of Junicode, the font for medievalists, has now been released; download it at http://junicode.sourceforge.net This version contains numerous new glyphs, including: - Complete IPA Extensions range in all four faces - Complete Runic range in all four faces - Mirrored runes in the regular face (accessible via the OpenType rtlm feature tag) In response to user comments, line spacing settings have been restored to those of earlier versions. A new hinting system has been adopted for greatly improved screen display. A WOFF version is available for web developers. The font has been tested in Windows 7, OS X and Ubuntu Linux. Please write if you run into any problems installing or using it. As always, Junicode is completely free. Peter Baker

Followed by drinks In recent years, large-scale research programmes have been implemented across the globe with labels like e-Science, e-Infrastructure and cyberinfrastructure (Meyer and Schroeder 2009). It has been argued that these various digital transformations have fundamentally changed how research is done. In this paper, we challenge this argument, and suggest instead that there are more specific changes in particular areas of research that have taken place. To delimit the scope of what can be considered a digital transformation of research or ‘e-Research’ (since these could potentially encompass a vast range of phenomena), we define these as the distributed and collaborative use of digital tools and data in the production of scientific knowledge. One feature that e-Research efforts share is that they consist of online research technologies with a digital component, though what this component consists of varies among particular e-Research projects (for example, data in a digital format, the use of computing power to perform processing, or the creation of complex visualizations with computer graphics). We argue, however, that this variety in technologies is not infinite, but that there are a limited number of these components which can be identified. His research in the area of social informatics focuses on understanding how digital technologies enable changes in the way people work, relate and interact. A particular focus has been studying how the practices of research are changing as digital tools and data become central in the sciences, social sciences, and arts & humanities. He is broadly interested in a fundamental question regarding how technology and practice are related: what evidence is there that technology has enabled people and organizations to do entirely new things? Monoconc (http://www.athel.com/mono.html) by Michael Barlow ( http://www.michaelbarlow.com/) should be able to handle this kind of task. 2. Any scholar can easily learn how to program using Stefan Gries's ( http://www.linguistics.ucsb.edu/faculty/stgries/) open-access programming language entitled "R" ( http://zoonek2.free.fr/UNIX/48_R/02.html) on which Gries has written the book entitled _Quantitative Corpus Linguistics with R_.( http://books.google.com/books/about/Quantitative_corpus_linguistics_with_R.…). Of course, other languages work well, too (e.g., Pascal, Perl). 3. Ask an NAU (Northern Arizona U) corpus linguist to write a program for you (e.g., I might be able to do it, but there would be a delay since another scholar is using me at the moment; the scholar could contact Doug Biber, http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/biber/, or I could do so on his or her behalf, and ask if anyone has a program already or can write one). Of course, students or graduates of other computational linguistics programs may be happy to offer assistance, too. It should be noted that the above approaches would probably rely on the use of either morphemic roots or "wild card" symbols; this would allow the analyst to search for strings of characters and variations in these strings. If this approach were inadequate, then there might be a delay if a part-of-speech (POS) tagger needed to be located; there would be a substantial delay if a POS tagger needed to be written. In addition, if the digital versions of the texts have been left intact, then it is likely that they contain variations in spelling. So, the first step would be to produce a copy of the corpus in which spelling variations were located and replaced with consistent spelling. This could be done using a "search-and-replace" function to capture as many occurrences as possible. Furthermore, it should be understood that these approaches may yield a percentage of observations (e.g., 85%) that could then be used for further analysis. Depending on the extent of linguistic variation in the original corpus, it may or may not be possible to extract 100% of the occurrences. In any case, I should think that the project is most do-able and most interesting. So, I hope these initial thoughts are helpful, and I would be happy to be of further assistance. Automatically scan two text corpora for quotations

Hi all, I have a research problem which I think could be easily solved by an appropriate software - if there is such a software. The problem is: I want do know whether Hincmar of Reims quotes somewhere in his many texts Aulus Cornelius Celsus. The texts form both authors are all digital available (dMGH, Brepolis Text Bases, Patrologia Latina Database), but is there any program that could search all these texts for similarities in wording and find phrases containing the same words - even in different word forms, order etc.? I doubt it, but I hope there is such a tool I don't know yet.

I am very pleased to send you the RFP of "Working with Text in a Digital Age", a three-week NEH Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities that will be held at Tufts University (July 23 - August 10, 2012). For further details see the previous announcement on the Perseus homepage: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/ "Tufts University invites applications to “Working with Text in a Digital Age”, a three-week NEH Institute for Advanced Technology in the Digital Humanities (July 23-August 10, 2012) that combines traditional topics such as TEI Markup with training in methods from Information Retrieval, Visualization, and Corpus and Computational Linguistics. Faculty, graduate students, and library professionals are encouraged to apply. Applicants should submit proposals by February 15, 2012. Participant proposals must include CVs and statements of purpose (no more than 1,000 words) describing how they will be able to use participation in the Institute to advance their subsequent careers. Participants must be committed to collaborative work and to publication of results from this Institute under a Creative Commons license. Participants should identify source materials with which they propose to work during the Institute and which must be in the public domain or available under a suitable license.
