Online course: Love in Medieval Western Literature

Dear All, Let me invite you to join a new online course at Collegium Volatile: Love in Medieval Western Literature Designed at taught by Sergi Sancho Fibla Denis de Rougemont once said it, and George Duby repeated it: “Europe discovered Love in the 13th century”. Such a statement might be daring to anyone not familiar with medieval literature, but here you will be able to check that it isn’t completely false. But what about Catullus or Ovid? What about Platon and Sappho? And besides, do you believe, like Rougemont, that “happy love has no history in Western Literature”? Do you think that the myth of Love in Europe is that of an unfulfilled and adulterous Passion? Do we only have stories of fatal Love? Can we find the seed of the current love stories in the so-called “birth of Love” of the 11th century? In our course we will not only study medieval texts in historical and philosophical context, but also compare them to other works of literature, cinema, essays, music, etc. Read more at: http://collegiumvolatile.com/?page_id=235 Students are expected to read all the required texts and presentations (Powerpoint with voice comments) and take active part in all discussions on chat and forum at least twice a week (the schedule for these virtual meetings will be set by everyone once the course will be started). Every week a Powerpoint presentation will give instructions for the assignments as well as introduce all the required and optional texts for the week. The assignments will consist of writing a classical report of at least, 600 words related to the topic dealt during the week. Workload: max. 3-4 hours per week. Sergi Sancho Fibla, researcher of the Department of Humanities in Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) with a predoctoral fellowship from La Generalitat de Catalunya since 2011. He studied Humanities and graduated as MA on “Comparative Studies of Literature, Art and Thought” in UPF. Currently, Sergi is working on his doctoral thesis about the relationship between image, text, memory and meditation in medieval works, especially in Marguerite of Oingt’s works. He is a member of the Investigation Group “Bibliotheca Mystica et Philosophia Alois Maria Haas”, and coordinator of “Forma: Journal of Humanities”. Dear all, On behalf of The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO), I'm delighted to announce the creation of our first Special Interest Group: Global Outlook::Digital Humanities (GO::DH) and to invite your participation. GO::DH is a Community of Interest whose purpose is to address barriers that hinder communication and collaboration among researchers and students of the Digital Arts, Humanities, and Cultural Heritage sectors across and between High, Mid, and Low Income Economies. The core activities of GO::DH are Discovery, Community-Building, Research, and Advocacy. Its goal is to leverage the complementary strengths, interests, abilities, and experiences of participants through special projects and events, profile and publicity activity, and by encouraging collaboration among individuals, projects, and institutions. It is founded on the principle that work is being done in many countries and regions and that we all have much to learn from each other. Participation in GO::DH is open to all who share its aims. The St Chad Gospels and Lichfield Cathedral's Wycliffe New Testament Online

Dear Colleagues, I should have sent this announcement out in the fall, but I now have Lichfield Cathedral's St Chad Gospels (8th century) and Wycliffe New Testament (~1410) available online: http://lichfield.as.uky.edu. I used a monochrome camera for the imaging, taking at least twelve different spectral bands for each page. I've designed the website to allow for the overlay of any two images within a page's image set, including RGB. I have a slide bar to allow for the adjustment of the top image's transparency to help sort out hard to discern details.
