Best wishes, Elena Spadini and Francesca Tomasi apologies for cross posting -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Workshop on Scholarly Digital Editions, Graph Data-Models and Semantic Web Technologies* Université de Lausanne, 3-4 June 2019 <http://wp.unil.ch/graphsde/> *Call for Papers* Digital texts processed by machines are linear strings of characters, but in most research activities in the Humanities (philology, linguistics, corpus-based analysis, cultural heritage, etc.) we store them in *databases* and we add *markup* to the text, that is a kind of intelligence made computable thanks to the use of widespread data-models, formats and standards. In the last decades, the popularity of *graph* data-models has increased, in accordance with the *semantic web* proposition and the development of standards such as RDF and OWL. Graph databases, in the form of triple stores (such as Graph-DB) or of labeled-property-graphs (Neo4j), are regarded as powerful and flexible solutions by research and cultural institutions, and private companies alike. The workshop is held to explore possible interactions between *digital texts*, the *graph* data-model, *scholarly editions* and the *semantic web*. The combinations of these objects/concepts, pursued in the last decades, remains experimental to date, and it represents one of the possible development for the field of *digital scholarly editing*. Contributions on one or more of the following topics are particularly welcome: - the conceptualization of *text as graph*; - the use of *graph-databases* for digital editions; - the* semantic web resources* for building digital scholarly editions; - the *interoperability* among digital texts through Linked Data Vocabularies; - the *integration* of graph flavoured data into xml documents. We welcome contributions from those involved in the development of *tailor-made solutions* for small scale projects as well as of large-scale *infrastructure*, focused on the *theory* and/or on the *practice* of this happy or unhappy combination. The workshop includes *presentations* and a *working group* session. Workshop *Where* Université de Lausanne – 1015 Lausanne – Switzerland *Language* The language of the workshop will be English. *Abstract submission* We invite researchers to submit abstracts for a 30 mins contribution (20 mins + 10 mins Q&A) by December 9, 2018. Abstracts will be reviewed double-blind by the members of the scientific committee, and all submissions will receive several independent reviews. Instructions for formatting and submitting abstracts will be published in September 2018. *Camera-ready paper submission* Notifications of acceptance will be sent by January 14, 2019. The authors of accepted abstracts should send a camera-ready version of their paper by April 15, 2019. The papers will be made available on the workshop platform. Before the workshop, the papers will be paired and a discussant will be assigned to each participant. The discussant must prepare two questions, that the corresponding author will receive twenty days before the workshop and should address in her/his presentation. Digital humanities scholarship continues to be driven by work at the intersections of a range of distinct disciplines and an ethical commitment to preserve and broaden access to cultural materials. Focused on these issues of social justice, we invite work at the intersections of critical DH; race and ethnicity; feminism, intersectionality, and gender; and anti-colonial and postcolonial frameworks to participate. Given the growth of these fields within the digital humanities, particularly in under-resourced and underrepresented areas, a number of complex issues surface, including, among others, questions of ownership, cultural theft, virtual exploitation, digital rights, endangered data <http://endangereddataweek.org/>, and the digital divide. DH communities have raised and responded to these issues, pushing the field forward. We view the 2019 symposium as an opportunity to broaden the conversation about these issues. Scholarship that works across borders with foci on transnational partnerships and globally accessible data is especially welcome. Additionally, we define the term "humanities" rather broadly to incorporate the discussion of issues that encourage interdisciplinary understanding of the humanities. The conference aims at reflecting on the new possibilities that the digital yields for pedagogy, teaching, and scholarly research: how will these transform teaching in the humanities? What contributions can humanistic cultural critique offer to the digital revolution? What is the connection with the digitization plan for Universities outlined by the Ministry? It also concerns the Digital Humanities as a new discipline, and this brings forward further considerations: how can the new professional figure of the digital humanist be developed? Which areas of knowledge define the Digital Humanities as a subject of study, research, and teaching? Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age: IIlluminations: Manuscript, Medium, Message<https://www.library.upenn.edu/about/events/kislak/SIMS/ljs-symposium11> November 15-17, 2018 Manuscript illumination has often been considered in relation to the texts it accompanies, but rarely in terms of its interplay with other artistic media. Historically, however, the technique was closely associated with other forms of artistic expression and served as a crucial point of contact and transfer for visual motifs across space and time. The goal of this year's symposium is to examine cases of intermedial exchange through the lenses of technique, style, iconography, social context, and cultural geography, while also posing broader questions about the deep connections between the craft of illumination and other arts more widely. Of special interest will be insights gained from the technical examination of works in different media, new comparisons made possible by digital technology, and the discovery of linkages once obscured by strict historiographical divisions The program will begin Thursday evening at 5:00 pm on November 15, 2018, at the Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central Library, with a keynote lecture by Professor Susie Nash of the Courtauld Institute of Art. Late Middle English digital editions

Hi there, Occasionally I trawl through the excellent catalogue of digital editions at https://dig-ed-cat.acdh.oeaw.ac.at/ looking especially at editions of medieval texts. Mostly this is for examples for teaching about editions, courses, workshops, to look at in comparison with others. I was trying to find a good example of some digital editions of late Middle English (~Chaucer onwards) that I wasn't already aware of from this catalogue. Any suggestions of ones not included in it? Thanks for your help, James

Best regards Summary Une édition critique cherche à reconstituer un texte ancien sur la base de ses témoins manuscrits et de sa tradition indirecte. Outre l’établissement de ce texte, l’édition critique inclut une liste de variantes de différents témoins ainsi que, généralement, un apparat des sources, des notes scientifiques et un index. L’outil informatique s’avère être d’une aide précieuse pour l’établissement d’une telle édition critique, que ce soit pour la comparaison des témoins et leur classement ou pour la mise en forme proprement dite de l’édition critique. La présente journée se propose d’étudier un aspect rarement abordé dans cette problématique : la manière dont peut être encodée l’édition critique elle-même, c’est-à-dire l’ensemble constitué par le texte établi, les variantes des manuscrits et les différents apparats. En effet, si tout travail informatique débute nécessairement en définissant comment structurer les données, le choix d’une structure particulière n’est pas anodin. Non seulement ce choix conditionne en tout ou partie les traitements possibles mais, plus fondamentalement, il reflète une certaine compréhension des données. À ce titre, la structure informatique d’une édition critique ne constitue pas un détail technique, mais témoigne d’abord d’une perspective philologique sur ce que sont un texte, des variantes, des témoins. This year's Summit 2018 presents a picture of the Finnish Digital Humanities Infrastructure landscape, and contrasts it with international developments: Where are we now? What services are there available? How are they used, and what are the next steps ahead? To stimulate discussions, the day starts with the keynote "Infrastructures and Interfaces for Digital Humanities Research: Dutch Experiences and Expectations" by prof. Charles van den Heuvel from Huygens Institute and University of Amsterdam. After this follows presentations regarding international infrastructure collaborations, existing data, vocabulary, and ontology infrastructures, language technology services, and data infrastructures related to museums, libraries, and archives. There are 22 presentations of people representing 16 different organizations. In the end, bubbles and nibbles are served in a social networking event. ManuSciences '19

Dear all, We are very happy to announce that manuSciences ’19 is now open for applications. ManuSciences is a week-long intensive course in manuscript studies which combines history, philology, palaeography, and codicology with material sciences, digital humanities and computer science. Participants will have lectures from experts on topics such as the making and analysis of papyrus, parchment and paper, DNA and C14 analysis, and TEI for Palaeography and Codicology. They will also have hands-on sessions in which they will make their own inks and writing samples and then analyse these samples or other images with techniques and equipment including multispectral imaging, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, and computational manuscript analysis. The summer school will take place at the Côte d'Azur on 10-15 March, 2019 and is open to young researchers (loosely defined), from master and PhD students to researchers and university lecturers. It is jointly organized by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -Prüfung (BAM), Berlin, the Center for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (SFB 950), Hamburg and the École Pratique des Hautes Études – Université Paris Sciences et Lettres.
