Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the next edition of the conference series "Graph Technologies in the Digital Humanities", to be held 21 and 22 February 2020 at the University of Vienna. The theme of this year's installment is "Modelling the Scholarly Process". As well as submissions relevant to the conference theme "Modelling the Scholarly Process”, we warmly welcome abstracts on the application of graph technologies to problems of provenance, source criticism, validation, and visualisation of scholarly resources. **Please share with anyone interested** [cid:DD50DF50-1CA1-48F9-894C-55898D43D148] The University of Iceland offers two international graduate programs in medieval studies, taught in English: (1) Medieval Icelandic Studies, a three-semester (90 ECTS) graduate program, with two semesters' (60 ECTS) worth of course work and one semester's worth (30 ECTS) master's thesis. The summer semester is the thesis semester, which means that the program can be completed in 13 months. See https://english.hi.is/medieval_icelandic_studies (2) Viking and Medieval Norse Studies, a four-semester (120 ECTS) graduate program run in cooperation with the University of Oslo in Norway, Aarhus University and Copenhagen University in Denmark. The advent of digitization has the potential to make the content recorded upon these documents easily and speedily accessible to users across the globe in the form of digital images. Thus, digitization has been hailed as a ‘digital renaissance’ in which the ‘forgotten-knowledge’ recorded upon these documents can be unfettered from their tangible carriers and widely circulated to be freely used in the enrichment of social, cultural and scientific discourse. Digitization has particular significance for scholars who are now able access and re-use these images in scientific research. However, in many instances such re-use is restricted through copyright claims made by the memory institutions and private sector entities who invest in the digitization process. But can a digital image of a public domain work produced through a mass-digitization process qualify for copyright protection? This presentation analyzes the legitimacy of copyright claims that are made in respect of digital images of documents recording public domain content and explores the space available to researchers and scholars to re-use these images for non-commercial purposes. As explained in the call for papers below, we want to hear your experiences in growing an online corpus (regardless of language). Thank you for forwarding this message to interested participants. On behalf of the entire Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams team, Ilse De Vos Call for Papers GROWING CORPORA Byzantine Book Epigrams and Online Text Collections ________________________________ Ghent, 24-25 June 2020 Since 2010, the Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams team (that is: we) have been growing an online corpus of metrical paratexts, several of which were previously unpublished or unknown altogether, and made them freely available to the scholarly community (that is: you). A new version of our database (https://www.dbbe.ugent.be<https://www.dbbe.ugent.be/>) was launched in June 2019. Exactly one year later, we are organising a two-day conference. Together with anyone interested in this particular genre of Byzantine poetry, we want to celebrate and reflect on what we have achieved so far and look ahead at what is – hopefully! – yet to come. Moreover, we want to stimulate communication and collaboration with other projects that are growing online corpora of texts. You can partake in two different types of sessions. In our demo sessions you can present your project and discuss your experiences in growing your online corpus (10-15 minutes). We are confident this will lead to a lively discussion on challenges we all face, such as data presentation, interoperability, and sustainability. In our thematic sessions you can present your research on Byzantine book epigrams (20 minutes). Possible topics include: * editing book epigrams; * theoretical reflections on the concept of book epigrams and other metrical paratexts; * book epigrams as a way to study the history of manuscripts; * visual aspects of book epigrams; * literary texts that function (or may have functioned) as book epigrams; * metre and language of book epigrams; * book epigrams in languages other than Greek. We especially welcome contributions inspired by the Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams. Dear Digital Medievalists, I just wanted to remind you about the open CfA (see the call below). The deadline is on the 15th! Digital methods are by definition at the border of Medieval Studies. This bold statement is primarily justified by the observation that the application of digital methods is triggered by a research community outside Medieval Studies, i.e. Computer Science and New Media Studies. Therefore, in its interdisciplinary nature digital medieval studies is a border-crossing discipline and breaks up traditionally developed scholarly silos and institutional borders. Within this field, experimentations with and applications of new methods and technologies challenge traditional perceptions and research approaches. Another kind of digital borders are "metadata borders". For example, digital cataloging standards create unintended, and sometimes intended, borders and boundaries that prevent data-sharing and linking. In light of this proposition, the Digital Medievalist will take the opportunity of next years' general IMC theme ("Borders") to discuss cutting edge and "border-crossing" digital methods and technologies and/or borders and boundaries caused by digital methods. Topics may include current research in machine learning, computer vision, 3D modeling, IIIF, multispectral imaging, Handwritten Text Recognition, Linked Data and distant reading, etc. Machine learning, for instance, poses specific problems for Medieval Studies, as its success depends on the availability, findability, reusability, and accessibility of large amounts of data. Similar issues exist with the application of other digital methods to medieval materials, and the session(s) "Digital Borders of Medieval Studies" will be the place to present and discuss them. The Digital Medievalist community invites the submission of proposals for 20-minutes papers covering a topic relating to the session title and focusing on the application of digital methods and technologies for current and future research in the field of Medieval Studies. Index or catalogue of original medieval texts?

Dear digital medievalists, Gabby Bodard has just posted a good question to our cousin, the mailing list of Digital Classicist on (see below). I wonder if you know of sites that catalogue or index original medieval texts (Latin, but also Greek and Vernacular). The Corpus Corporum (http://www.mlat.uzh.ch/MLS/) sure is the most complete (meta-)repository of freely available Latin texts. Other texts are indicated in the catalogues of digital editions by Patrick Sahle (http://digitale-edition.de/) and Greta Franzini (https://dig-ed-cat.acdh.oeaw.ac.at/), both browsable by language and period. Where would you go to find all possible free and open sources of Latin text of, for example, Geoffrey of Monmouth? Or Greek equivalent? Dear colleagues, Radboud University Nijmegen is advertising a four-year postdoctoral position in the NWO VICI-project 'Source of Life: Water Management in the Premodern Middle East (7th-15th century)’. This project studies the interrelationship between water installations, governance, and legal and cultural frameworks in five Middle Eastern cities (Basra, Baghdad, Mosul, Damascus and Cairo) from the first Arab conquests to Ottoman rule (7th-15th C). It seeks to: 1) map the institutional fabric of premodern Middle Eastern cities by taking water as a key service 2) identify incentives for institutional innovation in premodern urban water governance. Postdoctoral project - Water installations and waterways: An archaeological approach Your postdoctoral research approaches the two main objectives of the project from an archaeological perspective.
