Hi Dan,
there are several subversion clients for windows. Once I set up a system for people who wanted an easy to use system without or with little technical background. I used TortoiseSVN (http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/) which i think is the programm to go for as it is easy to use, mature and open source. TortoiseSVN is basically a shell extension for windows explorer, so usage should be really straightforward.

I am helping a project that is working on a really interesting text. Nobody on the project is particularly technical.
Because the members of the project are spread all over the place, they need a version control system for keeping track of their documents. I'd say they need subversion (the documents are PDFs and XML files), but I need them to be able to see it in something like windows explorer.
Has anybody any experience in setting up something like subversion for use with Windows?

Just a third vote for TortiseSVN. We use it for the SVN interface at RCH and it's really simple for anyone familiar with the Windows interface. For non-techies, I wouldn't recommend anything else.
