Workshop: Digital Text Editing and Knowledge Transfer, May 14th (London School of Advanced Study)

*** Apologies for cross-posting *** Dear community, We are pleased to announce a one-day workshop at the University of London School of Advanced Study (SAS) on sharing digital text editing training and teaching methods. The workshop takes place on *May 14, 2015* and is organised and endorsed by NeDiMAH, DARIAH-RS, Erasmus +, and the DiXiT Network. Over the past decades, those active in developing a range of digital scholarly editing practices have built up a large body of knowledge about digital tools and methods that enable the development, presentation, and analysis of digital texts. This has resulted in a wide variety of methods for teaching and training of text editing. However, those who have to adapt quickly to working in a digital scholarly editing environment are often not aware of these different training methods. As a consequence, they might be overlooking available resources, or even re-inventing the wheel. The event will bring together teachers of digital editing with a group of people who have faced the need to learn more about this area, especially those working in commercial publishing as well as research projects. A number of key practitioners will be invited to discuss the core resources available for text editing, and how expertise can be shared more widely. Specifically, we are looking to see how the experience of those in academia who teach and research text editing can contribute to the development of a core set of training materials for those new to the field, and how we can have better knowledge transfer around digital text editing. The underlying aim of the workshop is therefore to scope what is already available in terms of training materials, and to develop a methodology to assess different kinds of teaching material. This critical overview will assist the community in the further development of teaching material for text editing. As an output of the workshop, a basic and open curriculum will be developed and published as an online resource by NeDIMAH. To all digital humanists or people working on digital humanities projects, Please, save the date and join us for the annual Day of Digital Humanities that will take place on May 19th, 2015. A Day in the Life of the Digital Humanities (Day of DH) is a project looking at a day in the work life of people involved in digital humanities computing. Every year it draws people from across the world together to document, with text and image, the events and activities of their day. The goal of the project is to weave together the journals of participants into a resource that seeks to answer, “Just what do digital humanists really do?" This year, the event will be hosted on behalf of centerNet at the Laboratorio de Innovación en Humanidades Digitales de la UNED (LINHD) in Madrid. For this reason, we want to innovate and make the day more collaborative. We will boost multilingual participation and group cooperative activities. CENDARI Summer School "Researching Medieval Culture in a Digital Environment"

The CENDARI project (http://www.cendari.eu/) invites applications to its second summer school, to be held 20-24 July in Prague, Czech Republic, on the theme “Researching Medieval Culture in a Digital Environment.” The interdisciplinary five-day program is geared especially toward early-career historians and other scholars (doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows) in Medieval Studies as well as toward archivists, librarians, and e-scientists that engage with or specialise in this time period. No prior experience with digital research methods is required. Participants will need their own laptops. Through a number of hands-on sessions, participants will learn how to enhance their research with tools such as Abbreviationes, Classical Text Editor, and Manuscriptorium. They will also have the opportunity to experiment with the integrative CENDARI Virtual Research Environment. Lectures on the fundamentals of Digital Humanities and its prospects for Medieval Studies as well as field trips to cultural heritage sites in Prague will complete the program. The school will be held at the attractive Old Town venue of the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Guided by the vision of its founders, Lawrence J. Schoenberg and Barbara Brizdle Schoenberg, SIMS aims to bring manuscript culture, modern technology, and people together to provide access to and understanding of our shared intellectual heritage. Part of the Penn Libraries, SIMS oversees an extensive collection of pre-modern manuscripts from around the world, with a special focus on the history of philosophy and science, and creates open-access digital content to support the study of its collections. SIMS also hosts the <http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/schoenberg/index.html> Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts and the annual <http://www.library.upenn.edu/exhibits/lectures/ljs_symposium.html> Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age, now in its eighth year. The SIMS Visiting Research Fellowships have been established to encourage research relating to the pre-modern manuscript collections at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, including the Schoenberg Collection. Affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, located near other manuscript-rich research collections (the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and the Rosenbach Museum and Library, among many others), and linked to the local and international scholarly communities, SIMS offers fellows a network of resources and opportunities for collaboration. Fellows will be encouraged to interact with SIMS staff, Penn faculty, and other medieval and early modern scholars in the Philadelphia area. Fellows will also be expected to present their research at Penn Libraries either during the term of the fellowship or on a selected date following the completion of the term. Applicants can apply to spend 1, 2, or 3 months at SIMS. Project proposals should demonstrate that the Libraries' pre-modern manuscript resources are integral to proposed research topics. Recipients will be expected to work on-site at Penn Libraries for the duration of their fellowship, excluding possible short research trips in support of the proposed project to nearby institutions. CfP: Göttingen Dialog in Digital Humanities

Call for Papers: Göttingen Dialog in Digital Humanities The Göttingen Dialog in Digital Humanities has established a new forum for the discussion of digital methods applied to all areas of the Humanities, including Classics, Philosophy, History, Literature, Law, Languages, Social Science, Archaeology and more. The initiative is organized by the Göttingen Centre for Digital Humanities (GCDH). The dialogs will take place every Tuesday at 5pm from late April until early July 2015 in the form of 90 minutes seminars. Presentations will be 45 minutes long and delivered in English, followed by 45 minutes of discussion and student participation. Seminar content should be of interest to humanists, digital humanists, librarians and computer scientists. We invite submissions of complete papers describing research which employs digital methods, resources or technologies in an innovative way in order to enable a better or new understanding of the Humanities, both in the past and present. Themes may include text mining, machine learning, network analysis, time series, sentiment analysis, agent-based modelling, or efficient visualization of bigand humanities-relevant data. Papers should be written in English. Successful papers will be submitted for publication as a special issue of Digital Humanities Quarterly (DHQ). Furthermore, the author(s) of the best paper will receive a prize of €500, which will be awarded on the basis of both the quality and the delivery of the paper. comparisons of different e-MS readers?

Yesterday I attended a planning meaning concerning the Durham priory library's manuscript collection, which is planned for digitisation over the next 5-10 years. A question came up about whether there's been any study done on the relative *technical* merits of different platforms/programmes for viewing manuscripts, either online or downloaded locally. (The person was specifically interested in reviews or comparisons done by people with the relevant computational know- how). I confess to not being very familiar with this terrain; I've used Uni-HD's reader online (see, e.g., the Manesse codex: http://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/cpg848/0001?sid=c1e158af8bb04a02441…) and the reader used by, e.g., http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/0000/bsb00001649/images/, but I don't even know what the programmes behind these sites are! The one that was demonstrated to us is Mirador: http://www.biblissima-condorcet.fr/en/news/interoperable-viewer-prototype-n…, http://iiif.io/, and it was really cool.
