I am pleased to introduce a new project aimed at enabling digital research on manuscript catalogue data. Our DiSc<https://digitalscholarship.web.ox.ac.uk/>-funded project within the Bodleian Libraries is working to transform the Bodleian’s TEI-encoded medieval manuscript catalogues into accessible tabular formats such as CSV, to support innovative research in manuscript studies and the digital humanities. By making these data more user-friendly, we hope to foster new research avenues and collaborations. We kindly invite you to participate in a brief survey (approx. 10 minutes) to share your views on which data fields and features would best support your research needs. Your feedback will be invaluable in ensuring that our resource has the widest possible applicability. Dear colleagues and students, If you would like to explore how statistical and digital tools can be applied to the study of medieval manuscripts and printed books, you may be interested in the summer school Le livre médiéval au regard des méthodes quantitatives (Paris, 16-20 June), organized by the Lamop (University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), the École nationale des chartes, the IRHT, and DYPAC (University Paris-Saclay). Over the course of one week, participants will learn how quantitative methods and software can be used to study a corpus of books, with a theoretical and practical approach. The summer school will be conducted in French and held exclusively on-site. Participation is free of charge. The application deadline is March 31. "Matching Medieval Manuscripts with Machine Learning" Hannah Busch (University of Cologne) Wednesday 19 February 2025 4pm (GMT) (8am PT, 11am ET) Abstract: Large-scale digitization projects of the past twenty years and the possibility of exploitation with the help of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) have substantially contributed to reaching a critical mass which allows the application of deep learning for the study of medieval book scripts. In the past years, not only the number of digitized medieval sources increased significantly, but also the quality of the image data. Parallel to this development, the computation of images is becoming more powerful, and—more importantly—affordable. During my presentation I am going to talk about the possibilities of dating and localizing the origin of medieval Latin manuscripts with the help of Deep Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence. I will be giving insights in how to approach such an undertaking of building an image similarity search based on palaeographical features of medieval Latin scripts. In particular, I’ll be focusing on the reuse of existing scholarly manuscript descriptions for the training of Artificial Neural Networks and the challenges that come with relying on those new technologies. How is the palaeographic information encoded in descriptive metadata? Can manuscript metadata be read and processed by the machine? Can it be used to teach Artificial Neural Networks which manuscript samples are similar by means of Latin palaeography? To conclude my presentation, I’d like to discuss how we can build a bridge between the output of the artificial palaeographic eye and the human readable descriptive metadata. Bio: Hannah Busch studied German-Italian Studies (BA) and Textual Scholarship (MA) in Bonn, Florence, and Berlin. She worked as a research associate at the Trier Center for Digital Humanities, and as a PhD candidate within the project “Digital Forensics for Historical Documents” at the Huygens Instituut (KNAW) in Amsterdam and at Leiden University. In her doctoral thesis, she is working on the application of deep machine learning methods for the dating and localization of medieval Latin manuscripts. Her research interests also lie in various areas of digital medieval studies, in particular the (mass) digitization of medieval written documents and experimentation with computer-aided methods for manuscript research. Portuguese Municipal Charters in the Middle Ages: an Historical and Linguistic Approach in the Digital Era (*) developed an electronic edition of the first Portuguese royal charters, incorporating their most ancient documentary witnesses produced in Latin and the vernacular until the end of the 15th century. Urban and rural communities received rules from secular or ecclesiastical masters regulating social coexistence, rights and duties, economic activities, and administrative, jurisdictional, or tax practices. These norms, expressed in charters, resulted from the convergence of the interests of both parties. Over the centuries, the norm was successively rewritten, either in charters initially addressed to other lands or in ratifications of its content. Therefore, written words, graphic models, and forms of validation were circulated and adapted to each rewriting of the standard. The survival of these charters and their formal and linguistic variation throughout the medieval period (or even beyond) is the main object of study for the iForal team, which has been developing resources and collaborative work in history, linguistics, and information technologies. The project's central resource is its digital text editing platform, EDICOLAB, which allows collaborative and interdisciplinary work and will be available for other documentary corpora. This international conference aims to present and debate some of the research results of the iForal team, in dialogue with other national and international multidisciplinary projects, also focused on historical documentation from the medieval period. The use of digital tools and resources that challenge the way of reading, editing and criticising these texts, the scope of comparative analysis and the limits of historical-linguistic interpretation of data will be under analysis. We invite researchers, especially young researchers (doctoral students and recent PhDs), to present ongoing work on medieval documentation, from different perspectives (History, Linguistics, Textual Criticism, and Information Technologies). Possible topics (for 20-minute contributions related to medieval charters or other historical documentation) include, but are not limited to: - production, use, and circulation of historical documents - power agents and strategies - documentary heritage - normative traditions in interaction - norm and territoriality - social, political, economic categories - linguistic diversity and variation - emergence of vernacular languages - writing and orality - linguistic and spelling standardisation - genetics and textual transmission - textual studies and scholarly editing - digital tools and resources - digital edition and technological innovation Submissions should be sent by October 15th, using an online form (see website), with name, e-mail address, institutional affiliation and position, title of the proposed paper, and abstract (200 words in Portuguese, Spanish, English or French).
