CFP: Editing Old English: Ælfric's Lives of Saints (Kalamazoo 2012)

We feel that such a hypothetical edition needs to have a digital component and what this component would look and feel like is of interest to many DM members. Best, Grant Simpson Rachel Anderson Editing Old English: Ælfric's Lives of the Saints Special Session at the 47th International Congress on Medieval Studies (May 2012) 2012 marks the 100-year anniversary of the death of W. W. Skeat, the eminent lexicographer and editor of Anglo-Saxon texts. Skeat is known among Ælfric scholars as the editor of the four-volume Lives of Saints (1881-1890). This edition has numerous limitations, including an incomplete scholarly apparatus, a dated translation, and infrequent availability. A new edition is needed - but what would it look like? Who would it be for? This session will feature papers that examine Skeat's editorial choices and look towards what is needed for a future edition. Please send abstracts of around 300 words to Grant Simpson at glsimpso(a)indiana.edu by September 15. (Early submissons would be much appreciated.)

This workgroup, which I've been convening, has been discussing the issues of this module, trying to identify its shortcomings and the ways it could be improved. We have produced a document on the TEI Wiki, summarizing our email discussions: http://wiki.tei-c.org/index.php/Critical_Apparatus_Workgroup There have been several threads on the list, recently, about problems related to the Critical Apparatus module. I would like to invite all those who use the module, or would like to use it, to seize this oportunity to share on the list (and/or on the wiki page) their feedback on the Crit. App. module and chapter, the issues they have had while working on TEI critical editions, or the good points they want to stress in the module. Suggestions for improvement are, of course, welcome. The outcome of the discussion will be discussed further during the SIG meeting at the TEIMM 2011 in Würzburg. It strikes me that many people feel unhappy with this crucial module, each time thinking that it's because the module has been designed with other usages / users in mind: scholars interested in "born-digital" editions representing the variance of a text complain that the module has been designed with print editions in mind, while scholars wo endeavour to encode a print edition complain that it's not adequate either. === CALL FOR PARTICIPATION === Interedition 8th Bootcamp: 7 October - 11 October 2011 ----------------------------------------------------- == ABOUT INTEREDITION == Interedition (http://www.interedition.eu) is a COST (http://www.cost.eu) funded Action whose objective is to further the interoperability of tools in digital scholarship. Interedition is raising the awareness of the importance of interoperability as a major driver for sustainability for tools and data in the field of digital scholarship. This activity takes two forms: firstly, meetings in which researchers in digital scholarship can network their knowledge of tools and avenues towards their interoperability; secondly, the development of proof-of-concept implementations of interoperable tools. These proof-of-concept tools are the focus of Interedition's periodic bootcamps, which offer the open source development community in the humanities opportunities to meet, network, and exchange knowledge. == THE BOOTCAMP == Interedition is inviting all interested to participate in the upcoming Development Bootcamp, which will take place from 7 October to 11 October 2011 at the Universität Würzburg, coinciding with the start of the TEI-meeting (http://www.zde.uni-wuerzburg.de/tei_mm_2011/) which also takes place there. We hope thus to offer a good occasion for members of both groups to confer on the subject of interoperability. As special Think Tank for this is foreseen on 12 October, for which seperate bursaried may be acquired. The bootcamp and think tank are organized through the kind efforts of: - Fotis Jannidis (Universität Würzburg) - Malte Rehbein (Universität Würzburg) - Gregor Middell (Universität Würzburg) - Susan Schrebman (Trinity College Dublin) == OBJECTIVES == The primary objective of the bootcamp is the development of prototypes for interoperable 'microservice' tools for textual scholarship and digital editions. Interedition's working group 3 has identified transcription and annotation of physical textual sources one of the pivotal scholarly tasks involved with creating digital editions. At the 2010 München bootcamp in less than 5 minutes more than 18 transcription & annotation related tool development projects were identified. Non of these is adhereing to any machine to machine protocol or format for interchange. All results of high quality scholarly work on transcribing and commenting within these data silos are therefor locked in and hadrly (re)useable for further scholarly processing and analysis. Interedition wants to inspire an open source development movement around this problem of interoperabilty and invites anyone who can make a hands on contribution to a prototype distributed reference implementation of an interoperable model for text. We aim to have the participants returning to their local projects with a shared idea on how to approach text resource exchange, and GUI and back end tools to show for it. Suggested goals for the bootcamp are both models and proof of concept implementations for the following use cases: ** Use Case 1 ** ** Resource discovery & Highly granular text addressing/markup ** A text repository hosts a set of marked-up texts, possibly organized in different subsets (collections). Clients access the repository via RESTful protocols, particularly via the AtomPub protocol in order to get notified about newly created or recently modified texts in the repository and/or about certain layers of markup applied to them. The client could filter those feeds based on the text collection or markup/annotation type of interest. The Atom feeds' content is constructed dynamically based on customized queries against the repositories' content and would thus augment established standards for resource discovery that usually operate on the level of curated metadata (e.g. OAI-PMH). Automatized dissemination of transcribed texts in a decentralized, loosely coupled network of repositories is thus facilitated in a manner comparable to the way in which the blogosphere functions. ** Use Case 2 ** ** Text source exchange ** Use case: Texts can be replicated between repository installations and/or other datastores. The exchange includes the textual content as well as any chosen set of markup/ annotation layers associated with the text. Markup is allowed to overlap arbitrarily in the repositories own model while lossless transformation of text and markup information into XML-based encodings provides for the integration with existing tool chains. Interoperability and data interchange is thus facilitated. ** Use Case 3 ** ** Transcription & Annotation workflow ** Texts can be marked-up with several independent annotation layers such that a collaborative transcription and annotation workflow becomes feasible. For example an editor could start by transcribing a text with a minimal set of markup applied. A tool for language recognition listens for new texts in the repository and as soon as the editor submit the transcript, the tool adds annotations to it identifying the language(s) present in the transcript. Then a language-specific POS tagger, listening for repository events of added language annotations processes the transcript further by adding part-of-speech tagging. Later on automatic name entity recognition might be applied to the tagged transcript and finally another editor is notified (via an Atom feed or via e-mail), that the automatically tagged transcripts is ready to be reviewed. FEEL CHALLENGED? Come and code! BURSARIES COST Action IS0704 'Interedition' is offering bursaries to early stage researchers (< Ph.D. + 10 years) and developers that want to join the bootcamp. The bursaries will consist of an 100 Euro per diem allowance and will cover travel expenses fully (limitations apply). With apologies for cross-posting RESEARCH FELLOW ON THE PAUL COMMENTARIES PROJECT A research fellow is being sought to work on a new project scheduled to begin this autumn analysing the biblical text of the earliest commentaries on the Pauline Epistles in Greek and Latin. The research fellow will be a member of a team led by Dr Hugh Houghton and based at the Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing in Birmingham ( www.birmingham.ac.uk/itsee ). He or she will examine early biblical commentaries of the fourth and fifth centuries, comparing them with their manuscript tradition and related works. The work will involve identifying and adding relevant material to the project database and making electronic transcriptions of primary sources. Candidates should have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, excellent linguistic ability in Latin or Greek and very good computer skills. As it says in the advertisement, an eye for detail and good self-motivation to persist with repetitive and sometimes tedious text- critical work are essential! The post is full-time and fixed-term, initially for three years. The closing date is 14th September 2011. In collaboration with the Senate House Library at the University of London, the Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text & Image at the University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce the completion of the Seymour de Ricci Bibliotheca Britannica Manuscripta Digitized Archive, a corollary project to the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts. The archive is a searchable database containing the digitized notes of the historian and bibliographer Seymour Montefiore Robert Rosso de Ricci (1881-1942), made for the compilation of his unfinished census of pre-1800 manuscripts in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. De Ricci's notes, gathered in thirty-four boxes containing over 60,000 index cards, are currently housed in the Senate House Library. They are divided into two main sections: one for repositories (approximately 40,000 slips) and one for collectors (approximately 20,000 slips). The cards contain information gleaned from wide reading and especially from sale catalogues of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As the Senate House Library website for the archive states, the notes are "idiosyncratic but recklessly and persistently useful." Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age at the University of Pennsylvania & The Free Library of Philadelphia October 21-22, 2011 Writing the East: History and New Technologies in the Study of Asian Manuscript Traditions In partnership with the Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Penn Libraries are pleased to announce the 4th annual Lawrence J. Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age. This year's symposium will explore a range of issues relating to Asian reading and writing cultures, especially as they pertain to the manuscript source. Our focus will be on manuscripts from the Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian traditions. We will bring together scholars representing these traditions to examine the ways in which hand-produced texts shape both meaning and interpretation, and to a larger extent, the cultural norms that define their use. Update on “Collaboration in Cataloging: Islamic Manuscripts at Michigan”

*Please excuse cross-posting* Dear Colleagues, The University of Michigan Library is in the final year of a three-year, grant-funded project to fully catalogue its Islamic Manuscripts Collection. Supported by a “Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives” grant administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources with generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the project, “Collaboration in Cataloging: Islamic Manuscripts at Michigan” has sought to engage established and emerging scholars by involving them in the cataloguing process – examination, description and generation of searchable metadata – for the collection of roughly 1,100 manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish dating from the 8th to the 20th century CE. The manuscripts are being digitized and made freely accessible through the HathiTrust Digital Library in order to facilitate the cataloguing work, which leverages a web-based “crowdsourcing” approach to generate rich and detailed descriptions addressing both material and textual characteristics. The efforts of project staff at the University of Michigan, led by project cataloguer Evyn Kropf, are thus supplemented by contributions from the wider scholarly community as colleagues interact with brief inventory descriptions and the digitized manuscripts via the project website ( http://www.lib.umich.edu/islamic ) As of now, 686 of the roughly 870 previously uncatalogued manuscripts have been fully or near fully catalogued. 134 of these are manuscripts for which digitization is not possible at this time. I met Father Busa at one of the early Computers and the Humanities conferences, and in 1985 invited him to present at UC Davis. The night before, at dinner, we were telling jokes, and I told the one about the cannibal who had eaten both Protestant and Catholic missionaries, and had an ecumenical movement. Since the Italians at the table didn't quite understand, the always understanding Father Busa translated, if somewhat grimly. The next night, at a banquet, we took turns regaling each other with computer horror stories. Father Busa admitted that a while before, two sets of the *Index,* on tape, were to be transported to a new location, and two trucks were hired. Someone, however, mixed up the sets, and sure enough, one truck crashed and burned. That might have been the end of decades of work, but Father Busa and probably Thomas Aquinas got it all back together.
