(Apologies for cross posting) === Project Developer (Maternity Cover) – InfoDev Grade: Grade 7 Salary: £29,099 - £35,788 - Full-time, 1 year fixed term This is a 1 year fixed term maternity cover post. The post is within the Information and Support Group's Development Team (InfoDev; http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/infodev/) of the Computing Services. InfoDev is responsible for providing data solutions, undertaking web projects, and delivering research support to the department and the University. Oxford University Computing Services (OUCS; http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/) offers facilities, training, and advice to members of the University in all aspects of academic computing. Do you have: * A strong IT background with experience of providing client-facing services? * Experience of web design and development technologies (e.g. HTML, XML, XSLT, CSS, Javascript, jQuery)? * A good knowledge of at least one common programming language (e.g Perl, Python, PHP, Java)? * Some experience with content management systems (e.g. Drupal)? * A proven track record of both individual and collaborative development work to a specification and deadline? * An interest in providing intuitive and easy to use web front ends? * A good understanding of software development technologies and practices? Data management best practices for advanced imaging

(apologies for cross-posting - I sent this to DC as well) Hello Digital Medievalists, Here's a question for those of you involved in advanced imaging projects (3D modeling, multi-spectral imaging, etc.). I'm looking for best practices for managing this kind of data, specifically for long-term preservation. Something parallel to what I might find for (for example) storing digital images or encoded text files in a Fedora repository. I hope this question makes sense. Mac help

Hi all, I have a new research assistant who is going to be helping us at the DM journal. She's a Mac user, and to get her set up, I'd appreciate any advice this list has for software for the following: 1) SVN client (we use subversion for our journal back end and she'll need access; I'm assuming the Mac Version of Oxygen comes with the same SVN client the other versions do, but it might be nice to have a separate svn client as well--something like turtleSVN for Windows. 2) Unicode navigator--is there a standard code point navigator for Mac? Almost right away we're going to have her putting in some greek and mathematical symbols in an article: is there a utility for browsing and search code points? -dan

Teaching the TEI: your practice?

Dear Digital Medievalists, I guess I can safely assume that several people here have an experience teaching the TEI, specifically to an audience of medievalists or historians. After teaching some workshops, I feel more and more that it is highly efficient to teach the TEI not alone, isolated, as a means to encode documents in a smart way, but putting the TEI XML at the center of the other technologies that make its interest immediately evident to the students. For instance, I have experienced that providing the students, when they're finished with their task of encoding a critical edition, with the Version Machine on the one hand and another set of XSLT producing a classic, print-like view of their document greatly helps them understanding not only what encoding is for, but also what they have been doing so far. I am even pondering whether or not including the use of eXist-db in a forthcoming course (which might be pushing it a bit far, I admit). Of course, since XSLT or XQuery are not really easy to grasp in a short period for people without any technical background, and it is not really evident to introduce them to the subtleties of those technologies. Still, it's probably good if the students get some idea of how technologies work together, instead of putting all their trust into the magic IT people will work on their smartly encoded TEI documents to "put them on the web" :) I would be interested in a feedback of your practice: do you, when you teach the TEI, feel the need / manage to integrate notions about other tools and technologies of the XML family? And if so, how do you do that (proper introduction to XSLT? use of packaged tools like the v-machine? etc.).
