lexicometrics for dummies

Hello list! I have to confess that, unlike many digital medievalists and humanists, I am neither a linguist nor a lexicographer... Although, I have long been tempted to use lexicographic tools on my sources (for the records, latin homiletic literature). I am particularly interested in cooccurrences, techniques of authorship attribution, and automatic identification of "borrowed" spans of text, for instance. The problem is I feel a bit clueless / helpless when it comes to put things into gear... Would any of you have already gone the same way, and could direct me to some introduction accessible to non-linguists, and maybe to some lexicometry softwares? I am particularly interested in softwares that would be able to deal "intelligently" with Latin (most of them seem to handle very nicely contemporary, widespread languages like English, but I haven't seen any specializing in Latin). **We are still looking for papers for both sessions, please respond ASAP if you are interested in participating in either session** The Digital Medievalist Community of Practice (http://www.digitalmedievalist.org/) is sponsoring two sessions at the Forty-Fifth International Congress on Medieval Studies, May 7-10, 2009. See below for session names and descriptions. Please send inquiries and abstracts for 20-minute presentations to Peter Robinson at p.m.robinson(a)bham.ac.uk. Paper session: The state of the art in handwriting recognition and analysis for medieval documents Much work has been done towards automated analysis of handwritten documents, with a focus on handwriting recognition, in the last years, and some of the developments seen in OCR and layout recognition systems may be applicable to medieval studies. Further, the increasing interest in sophisticated linkages of text and image might be enhanced by developments in handwriting recognition and analysis. We welcome papers which report on work done or ongoing in these areas, or which seek to establish methodologies. Paper session: Collaborative tools and environments for medieval scholarship Many groups around the world are working to develop a new generation of collaborative tools and research environments, with potential wide applicability to medieval studies. This leads to questions about the nature of collaboration itself, and about useful models of collaboration. Should Digital Humanities be more like Medieval Studies?

Hi there, I'm here at the Digital Resources in the Humanities and Arts 2009 Conference in Belfast (http://www.dho.ie/drha2009/). I was listening earlier today to someone talking about the way that Digital Humanities centres try to find funding and was struck be some of the similarities (and differences) between the way these and centres for medieval studies (and similar) are often organised. When I did my PhD at Leeds many years ago it was still a 'centre' for medieval studies -- it has since become an 'institute' but I think model is probably still fairly similar (someone do correct me if I'm wrong). In this case there are some central medieval studies staff, but the medievalists in the rest of the humanities departments contribute to this centre (whether by dept. funding or more likely teaching part of an MA course, etc.). But overall the model is on of cooperation and collaboration in which a majority of the faculty of the centre for medieval studies may be primarily employed in one or other humanities departments. But there are, of course, other models. Sometimes a CMS is set up with a large number of dedicated staff who are not part of other humanities departments, sometimes the 'centre' is entirely virtual with the courses primarily located and part of degrees in those humanities departments, but open to 'medieval studies' students, or sometimes there are some CMS staff but these work in conjunction with faculty from other departments to provide the breadth required. I didn't know whether that actually reflected how most CMSes (and CMRSes, and similar centres and departments) were organised. So I wondered if people might be willing to fill out a quick straw poll (open only until Wednesday evening) to describe their Centre for Medieval Studies (or similar). It is just meant to be a quick straw poll, hardly a deeply scientific sample. The reason I'm asking is that I think Digital Humanities could probably learn a thing or two in this area from Medieval Studies when it comes to organising departments to provide some of their teaching and staff. How to go about convincing departments to also let some of their staff to officially do a small bit of digital humanities teaching is another question! Thanks for your help! The first example to come to my mind was the third edition of the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature -- the whole was commissioned some years ago, and vol. 4 (1800-1900), ed. Joanne Shattuck, appeared in 1999, but the whole project was abandoned a few years ago when CUP realized it would be impossible to sell the hard-copy volumes, and couldn't think of a way to recover costs on an on-line version. All the contributors were released from their contracts, the project has been dropped, and vol. 4 remains orphaned in libraries. Of course plenty of long-term projects have taken advantage of new technologies. When I first spoke with John Simpson about OED3 in the '90s, he said the plan was still for a print version; the most recent time I spoke with the OED lexicographers, they said a print edition is unlikely -- still, the project goes on apace, and it continues to get plenty of resources. I'm more interested in genuine interrputions, whether wholesale abandonment, significant trimming of expectations, dropping of a major institutional sponsor, or what-have-you. Have any of the major encyclopedia or dictionary publishers officially called it quits? -- are decades-long works like the Corpus vitrearum medii aevi still going ahead?
