Hello Dan, You may use my Open XML Editor ("http://www.philo.de/xmledit/") to transcode XML documents from UCS-4 to UTF-8. The editor currently supports a couple of input formats, but only UTF-8 as output format. Loading the document and using the "save as ..." function should do the job. Be careful: just saving the document will replace the original with a UTF-8 version. Note also that this is not a simple character by character transformation. Instead, a model of the XML document is internally built and this model is then serialized. This implies that - the transformation might not work if the input XML document is not wellformed, - some additional normalization of the XML document takes place (in particular: whitespace between markup in the XML prolog, i.e. before the first tag, is normalized to line breaks, empty elements are expanded, e.g. <foo/> becomes <foo></foo>, and character references are expanded), - external entities are not transcoded. A step-by-step explanation in German how the transformation from UCS-4 into UTF-8 works is included in my draft about "Zahlen- und Zeichencodierung", available at "http://philo.de/lv/multimedia/codierung.html". A proposal for a commission

Hello all, Now that the website is up and running, I'd like to propose a commission for the list: let's start writing a primer on humanities computing for medievalists. What I'm thinking of is using the wiki to write individual "chapters" and then combine them using a table of content wiki entry. This would also allow us to reuse "chapters" in different contexts (e.g. someone could add a TOC for "encoding medieval music" and reuse several already existing chapters). Since this would be a collaborative effort, the precise contents would be a fluid and collective decision. I can only know what I'd like to see (or wish I had seen some time in the past): -imaging: what it involves, whether I should/can scan from slides (what format), how much sharpening or colour-adjustment I ought to do, etc. -Fonts: what is unicode? how do I access it? are there other systems? where do I find fonts? are their standards? how do I encode fonts in my web pages (not I am being deliberately naive here). -Markup: structural vs. display vs. wordprocessing vs. text files: what's the difference? What should I keep in mind if I start a project? Why should I bother distinguishing between different types of italics using structural markup? Do I *have* to learn TEI? -Project management: what is the typical life of a medieval computing project? what kind of funding and/or expertise would I need? Can I do it on my own? are there resources/books I should know about? Is there advice for publishing out the other end? There are obviously many more questions and sub-questions one could ask. Is this something people would be interested in? Any suggestions for possible topics? Volunteers to start writing? The only thing I would ask if you are willing is that you sign your contributions by signing into the Wiki before editing. You don't have to, but this isn't a pure wiki: we are a collection of largely professional scholars whose business depends on responsibility. This would also allow us, if we were extremely pleased with the results, to publish a parallel version in some other format--assuming that's not a bad idea in some way I can't see. I am willing to coordinate activities to the extent that that is necessary. My first inclination, however, is to propose the project and see what happens. Other ideas? Acronyms again

Hello all, I'd like to return to a question I asked early on in the list regarding acronyms. I can't find the original thread in the archives. I'd originally asked about web sites that define computer acronyms. A couple of people suggested different sources. Would you be willing to resend the info? I'd like to add the link to the acronym section of our new wiki-based faq <http://sql.uleth.ca/dmorgwiki/index.php/Acronyms> (accessible from the new DM site: <http://www.digitalmedievalist.org/>). I'm planning to go through the e-mail archive for the last several months looking for items that we could include in the wiki. If you know of something or see a lacuna, please consider adding it yourself or let me know. We've also had several important announcements of tools, software, utilities, etc. I wouldn't mind posting these in the new item. I'll be contacting people who have announced things privately over the next couple of weeks to get information. Please feel free to contact me first in the meantime. We don't have a "submit your own news item" form ready yet. The Community website is now up and running

Hello all, Our Digital Medievalist Website is now up and running <www.digitalmedievalist.org>. It is fairly bare bones right now. We've built it on the theory that if we did, you would come. I am most excited about the RSS server and the project wiki. May I encourage you all to contribute to both? We look forward to publishing your announcements of software, conference sessions, new projects, etc. The wiki will also hopefully become a very valuable resource. I encourage you to contribute questions and answers to it. I'll be keeping track of discussions we have on dm-l and trying to summarise them when relevant in the wiki. Later, I am planning to see if we can use the wiki to write collective primers to various common issues. With great expectations, -dan P.S. open source z39.5 compatible bibliographic database software

Hello all, I use Procite (<http://www.procite.com/> to keep my bibliography, mostly because it has a good Z39.5 client. Z39.50 <http://www.loc.gov/z3950/agency/> is an international standard used by many libraries (though not the Royal Dutch Library, duizend bliksembommen!) for data interchange. In the case of procite, what this means is that I can download book information, including call numbers and subject fields directly from various libraries. Amongst other things, it has made it quite easy to rearrange my personal library using LoC call numbers (not a perfect system, of course, but since it comes ready made, I can't complain). Anyway, I want now to built an on-line catalogue of my stuff, so I can check if I own something when I am in a foreign library. Originally, I was just going to dumpt the procite format to a database (it is built on a 45 field database) and use PHP and MySQL to built a simple front end. But then I began to wonder if perhaps an open source system already existed. Does anybody know of one? New project at Brown: Virtual Humanities Lab

Dear digital medievalists, There's a new humanities computing project based at Brown University. Continuing the work of the Decameron Web and other electronic projects relevant to Early Modern Italy, with the Virtual Humanities Lab we plan to develop existing and new digital resources into an experimental model for collaborative scholarship and pedagogy. We are encoding new texts (Boccaccio's Esposizioni sulla Commedia di Dante and portions of Giovanni Villani's Croniche). We are also beginning work on a new interface, which will provide tools that will allow scholars to annotate texts online, suggest variant encodings, and of course participate in discussion using natural languages as well as code. We have started a weblog at http://brown.edu/Departments/Italian_Studies/vhl/. Clicking on the "about" link there, and perusing the posts written so far, will tell you more about the project. We enthusiastically invite comments from any interested parties. Wow, I'd never thought of <lb> preceding a line (certianly not the first). I've always used them as following. Same is true for pb and cb, though I suppose I'd put the following p. number on @n were I to number them. I wonder though if you should number a pb cb or lb, however. The tag doesn't really contain the page, or whatever, after all. It is a point *between* pages, lines, columns, etc. (think about lb and l. <l> naturally has a line number because it contains a line. <lb> on the other hand marks a point and so sshouldn't have @n. What we really need is a <pb/> : <pg></pg> pairing though that can rapidly cause hierarchy problems. One solution might be this: text <pb> <milestone type=pagenumber n=2> more text... The only reason for offerng this is a) the pb describes a point (correctly IMO) and the milestone is not incorrect in reporting that it is on p. 2. I wonder if anyone who has worked with using TEI P3-4 to encode manuscript or printed book transcriptions or editions could tell me if a local standard among medievalists is developing for the use of "milestone" elements that have to do with the arrangement of the physical object, such as line break, column break and page break tags. Specifically, I'm wondering if the attributes given to these tags (such as 'n') usually refer to the page (line, etc.) following or the page (line, etc.) preceding the milestone element. My *guess* is that these breaks are usually connected to the text following, but I don't see a logic in the tags themselves that would require that and my experience of what people do is pretty limited to my own narrow part of the field. I should comment that part of my doubt stems from the way pb, lb, and cb are described in the Guidelines. Both pb and cb say "marks the boundary between one . . . [X] and the next in a standard reference system," apparently indicating that there should be an X already there before the first of these tags is used in a file; whereas lb "marks the start of a new (typographic) line in some edition or version of a text," indicating that it should be used before the first (typographic) line. I do not believe that either the implied variation in application (to a "standard reference system" on the one hand and "some edition or version" on the other) or the stated variation in placement (before or between bits of text) is intended in any strong sense--probably at all--by the editors, by the way. Several milestone elements (milestone itself, handshift, etc.) do make reasonably clear, either in their Guidelines description or in the examples given, that they are meant to be used at the beginning of a section of text to which they refer .
