Call for papers: Digital Classicist London 2024

We are looking for seminars on any aspect of the ancient or pre-colonial worlds, including history, archaeology, language, literature, cultural heritage or reception, that address innovative digital approaches to research, teaching, dissemination or engagement. We are particularly interested in proposals for seminars that think about digital capital, models of labour and credit, and community engagement with heritage and antiquity. Seminars will be held fortnightly through June and July in the Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House, London, and will be simultaneously streamed to remote audiences on Youtube, but we hope most speakers will be physically present in London. We have a small budget to support travel for speakers within the UK. (apologies for cross-posting) =================================== CALL FOR COMPETITION: SAM 2024 https://ai4ch.uniud.it/udiadscomp/ =================================== We are glad to announce SAM: International Competition on Few-Shot and Many-Shot Layout Segmentation of Ancient Manuscripts, in conjunction with the 18th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition ICDAR 2024. Competition Overview: Layout segmentation is a critical aspect of Document Image Analysis, particularly when it comes to ancient manuscripts. It consists in decomposing the document in several regions representing title, main text, paratext, etc.. We invite the research community to address this task on U-DIADS-Bib, a novel dataset of fully-labelled ancient manuscripts. Competition Tasks: We propose two separate tasks. It is entitled 'Megadungeon' and it takes readers on a journey into the vast depths of subterranean mazes and structures. Issue editors Paolo Berti, Stefania De Vincentis, and Gabriele de Seta revise the concept of the megadungeon, originating from role-playing games, as a model to capture the complexity of digital media. Characterized by procedurally generated geographies and self-sustaining ecosystems, megadungeons resonate with key digital aspects: infrastructural stratification, scaling processes, algorithmic logic, and the gamification of everyday life. In this special issue, seven articles respond to the editors' call to explore this speculative analogy from several complementary perspectives: the history of the dungeon in fantasy and gaming; theories of depth and interconnectedness in digital media; bestiaries of new digital creatures and monsters; explorations of open worlds and creative economies in new media art. Dear colleagues, I would like to bring to your attention a PhD-position at Radboud University Nijmegen, advertised in the context of the MSCA Doctoral Network 'MECANO: Mechanics of Canon Formation and the Transmission of Knowledge from Greco-Roman Antiquity’. MECANO brings together five universities and an array of academic and non-academic institutions interested in the topic of canonicity. MECANO's twofold goal is to develop a new model for the study of canonicity and to train ten PhD researchers to become versatile intellectuals ready to tackle the challenges of modern engagement with the topics of canonicity, diversity, and cultural heritage. PhD position: 'Recovering Anonymous Late-Antique Preachers in the Corpus of Pseudo-Augustinian Sermons’ (Supervised by Dr Shari Boodts (Radboud Institute for Culture & History) and Prof. Gert Partoens (KU Leuven)) This PhD project centres on the corpus of anonymous late-antique sermons which travelled under the name of Augustine in the medieval manuscript tradition. This project seeks to open up and valorise this important and understudied corpus by describing and analysing the sermons of forgotten late-antique preachers, preserved through their association with Augustine. The project combines expertise in Latin philology and medieval manuscript studies with a focus on digital methods and data science. The vacancy is open to applicants of all nationalities who comply with the MSCA mobility requirement: not having resided in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months preceding appointment.
