3D and Proceedings of the Digital Humanities Congress 2012

Dear colleagues, I am happy to announce that the Proceedings of the Digital Humanities Congress 2012 are now available online. They include a paper I wrote on 3D and its implications for studying and digitally preserving early illuminated manuscripts http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/openbook/chapter/dhc2012-endres . The paper discusses the high resolution, interactive 3D images of the 8th-century St Chad Gospels https://lichfield.as.uky.edu and greatly expands on topics covered in my video http://youtu.be/ebr0HNnNNrs — you might find the paper especially helpful if you are using the 3D images as a way to engage students in your teaching. The published proceedings include many fine papers, but Andrew Prescott writes a particularly wonderful historical essay about DH as a space in which tinkering, making and theory collide. xslt functions for roman dates and numerals

Dear all I've written two XSL 2.0 functions which might be of some interest for digital medievalists. The first ("is_roman_number") checks if a given string is a correct Roman numeral or not (returning a boolean). E.g. <xsl:value-of select="locfun:is_roman_number('xvi')"/> returns "true". The second ("convert_date") converts Roman dates (you know, something like 'XII Kalendas Decembris') into a string, containing the date in modern (english) format. The function expects four parameters: 1. A string indicating the month in latin. The function is quite tolerant here. 2. A string indicating the part of the month: kalendae, nonae, idus. Again much spelling variation tolerance here. 3. A string indicating the given number of the day in Roman numerals. If your date is exactly on a fix date (eg. "kalendibus"), just write '' here. 4. A boolean for the leap year. 'true()' means 'yes, we're in a leap year'. E.g. <xsl:value-of select="locfun:convert_date('iunii','idus','III',false())"/> will return "June 11". Both functions use the xmlns:locfun="urn:local-functions" namespace and the xmlns:own_t="http://no-real-uri-here/arguments_and_document_node_variables_of_Christian_…" namespace for document node variables. You find the code file attached. You might use, edit, share it in whichever way you like! CeRch Seminar: Founders & Survivors: Tasmanian Convict Life Courses in Historical Context

All the best, Valentina Asciutti Abstract: Founders & Survivors is a multi-university and public collaborative project that is building a transnational and inter-generational data set of life courses generated from the UNESCO recognized convict records of Tasmania. This paper outlines the technical history of the project: mass digitization and archiving online of over 100,000 images; manual scholarly transcription; TEI standard XML data library based on automated and manual record matching and linkage; crowdsourcing using Google Docs to manage over 60 online volunteer genealogists; re-constitution of amalgamated life courses and record linkage; development of customized genealogical database for population and family analysis (Yggrasil); export to statistical programmes (SPSS, Stata). Three grants from the Australian Research Council have funded this work, and the outcomes have been (1) Hamish Maxwell-Stewart's nominal dataset of around 70,000 Tasmanian convicts using Deborah Oxley's transcriptions of the probation era, amplified by full transcriptions of 1 in 25 convicts and linkages to later criminal records (at the University of Tasmania); and (2) the Life Course project run by the authors which has completed life courses researched for all convicts from 91 convict shiploads, creating a reference population of 12,068 men (around 25% of the total) and 5,549 women (around 40% of the total), with another 6188 (at last count) from random ships (at the University of Melbourne). The proportion of convicts researched for life before, during and after sentence, marriage, fertility and death is around 37% of the total number of convicts for whom adequate records have survived. This sample is big enough to enable significant analysis on all-cause and cause-specific mortality; fertility; the life course effects of insult accumulation; temperament and survival; early life influences and intergenerational effects. None of this would have been possible without the combination of information technology, digitized archives, customized software and the thousands of hours of labour donated by volunteers, to the equivalent value of AUD 4 million!
