Dear Digital Medievalists, Registration is now open for a Digital Networking event at Queen Mary, University of London. Supported by the British Academy, the day will bring together early career scholars interested in developing Digital Humanities projects. It will combine targeted networking sessions and group workshops, with presentations by guest speakers designed to address the practicalities of running digital projects and to provide advice on grant applications. PhD Studentship at Calgary

I have just been granted funding for a PhD student in digital medieval literary or linguistic (OE, ME) studies, to commence September 2014 or January 2015. The student will be fully funded for four years. The "Eyes High" scholarship itself is worth $25K Cdn per year for a Canadian applicant, $30K Cdn per year for a non-Canadian. That amount will be reduced to an $8K top-up per year if the student wins, as is expected, major external funding such as a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada doctoral fellowship. The funding from the "Eyes High" scholarship would also be supplemented with funding from my own grants and/or with teaching assignments in my department, for somewhere in the area of an additional $15K per annum. The doctoral project would need to be in the general area described above, and would ideally complement or be part of my own ongoing editorial projects, especially the Online Corpus of Old English Poetry or its planned Aelfrician extension, the probable target of my next research grant application. A strong background in digital humanities work is very desirable but lack of one is not necessarily a deal-breaker for a highly-qualified candidate. Turn-around is very tight. I will need an expression of interest by 20 February in order to consider anyone as a candidate; this should include a CV and if possible transcripts of your academic record. Applicants need to have a completed Masters degree by the time of taking up the studentship. My candidate needs to be submitted to our university approvers by 10 March. I was on the committee that put this award together and a goal is to really find a way of recognising the things in DH that are crucial to the field but not always easy to reward or otherwise recognise. The 2014 iteration of the Writing Britain Conference will take place in the English Faculty at the University of Cambridge under the auspices of the Centre for Material Texts. Some of the topics which we are keen to explore are literary and non-literary agencies and their significance and/or relevance in the medieval period across British medieval written culture in English, French, Latin, Norse and the Celtic languages. All the best, Valentina Asciutti Abstract: New music technologies, or apps, have the potential to be of considerable value to musicians, particularly to learners and teachers in classrooms or during private teaching. The quantity and range of these technologies is now considerable, such that, for instance, musicians have access to a wide range of sophisticated notation software that provides almost as many ways of writing and editing music as are available in word processing. The apps can be classified as pertaining to (a) the learning of content about music (b) the learning of the skills of performance (c) sharing performance and (d) creativity in music - with many sub-divisions in each section. The presentation will focus on the website - musicappsforlearning.weebly.com - in which the author has set out the apps according to the above classification, and will briefly explain the most important features of some examples in each category. The value of most of these new technologies is very similar to the value of much of the newest software in the general: to give musicians tools through which they can work more quickly and easily, and from which they can receive automated assistance. For instance, there are apps that enable transposition from one musical style to another, or that will flag up errors in playing a specific piece, or that exploit the power of multimedia. The general impact of these technologies is likely to be towards independence of learning, performance, and creativity. This in turn would enhance motivation among people - young or old - who might otherwise not expect to be able to learn or perform or compose music. This will be an interactive seminar with audience participation encouraged, i.e. rather than talk followed by questions, we hope for an ongoing dialogue between speaker and audience members. Speaker bio: Anita Pincas is Visiting Fellow, formerly Senior lecturer, at the Institute of Education, University of London. Though not a musician, she takes an active interest in music learning and creativity, having a singer-songwriter son. She has published on the comparison between language and music as different modes of communication. Her professional fields embrace most areas of education, with a special focus on language learning, which, she feels, is not a million miles away from music learning. Her major academic fields, in a long career, have been English language and literature, new technologies especially those relevant to learning and online and/or distance education. She has taught and supervised at all levels from bachelors, through masters and doctoral work.

Dear Colleagues, I am happy to announce that I now have available for viewing images taken over the last 125 years for nine pages of the 8th-century St Chad Gospels: https://lichfield.as.uky.edu. These photographs include up to five images for a page, beginning with images taken in 1887 and concluding with images taken by my imaging efforts in 2010. Once you click a page's thumbnail, the viewer automatically loads a page's full set of images. Choose the ones you want to compare from the viewer's drop-down lists. You can adjust the transparency of the top image through the viewer's slidebar. I have also included a brief discussion and some preliminary findings from overlaying these images: https://lichfield.as.uky.edu/historical-images. I include an animated gif of an area that contains chipped pigment to provide one example of the aging (happily, these areas are rare). The submission deadline is July 1, 2014. *Fons Luminis Call for Papers* *“Using and Creating Digital Medievalia”* Fons Luminis, a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal edited and produced annually by graduate students at the Centre for Medieval Studies in the University of Toronto provides a forum in which to address, challenge, and explore the content and methodologies of our various home disciplines. We invite current graduate students to submit papers relating in some way to the 2015 journal theme, “Using and Creating Digital Medievalia.” Since the mid-twentieth century, computing has been and continues to be a major factor in the medievalist’s research. From Father Busa’s creation of the Index Thomasticus in the 1940’s to current library and archival digitization projects, computational methods are essential aspects of the medievalist’s occupation. Papers are encouraged to address: medievalist use of digitally stored information; social scientists and librarians as creators and/or curators of knowledge about the Middle Ages; future directions of digital humanities; the importance of digital humanities to work in paleography, codicology, diplomatics, and text editing. Articles may also focus on topics including (but not limited to) mapping and space, the impact of digitization on concepts of the archive, and digital tools in teaching. Contributions may take the form of a scholarly essay or focus on the study of a particular manuscript. Articles must be written in English, follow the 16th edition (2010) of The Chicago Manual of Style, and be at least 4,000 words in length, including footnotes. Quotations in the main text in languages other than English should appear along with their English translation.
