Call for submissions of opuscula

Call for Submissions to Opuscula: Short Texts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance About the Journal Opuscula is a new high-quality peer-reviewed, on-line journal/text series published by Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Saskatchewan and specializing in short texts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. We seek submissions from scholars of a wide variety of disciplines and will include a diverse range of texts, including literature, philosophy, letters, charters, court documents, and notebooks. The goal of the journal is to establish open access to a substantial body of small but complete texts in scholarly editions to researchers and educators. Our first issue will be published in September 2010. Submissions Editions should generally be based on single witnesses although critical editions may be considered. Where texts are not English, translations may be appropriate but are not necessary. Texts should generally be under 6000 words in length, and each must be accompanied by an introduction in English of approximately 1500 words that provides historical, literary, and bibliographic context and codicological and palaeographic (or typographic) description. New editions of previously edited pieces may be considered but only if there are compelling reasons. All submissions will be subject to a double-blind review process and submissions for review must include facsimiles of any base manuscripts. DM Board Election Results

DM Election Results! The votes have been counted, and the winners have accepted their membership of the DM Board. It was a very closely fought election this time, with a plethora of well-qualified candidates. A total of 53 of you voted and for a long time there were only a few votes in it. But eventually the top four (in alphabetic-by-surname-order) were found to be: Daniel O'Donnell, Malte Rehbein, Torseten Schassan, and Peter Stokes. All of them welcome (or welcome back) to the DM Board. I would like to thank: George Ferzoco, Franz Fischer, Michael Norton, and Rebecca Welzenbach for being willing to run as well. Everyone received a really good showing of votes, so I would in no way be disheartened! The Board is always looking for help especially in reviewing, copy-editing, and editing journal articles. The results of the optional poll on the ballot form was also interesting, and I may summarise the results at some point back to the DM-L list when I've had more time to digest them. Junicode font, version 0.6.16

This is the first new release of Junicode, the font for medievalists (and others), since 1977. This release contains fixes of several bugs, improved coverage of the Medieval Unicode Font Initiative (MUFI) character set (though this is not yet complete). Most of the medievalist Unicode characters recently added in Latin Extended D and other ranges have been added. Many of these were already in the Private Use Area; the PUA characters remain for now, but users should begin to adopt the new, more standard encodings. The regular face currently contains 5870 glyphs; the italic, bold and bold italic faces are much less complete, though an effort is being made to make the italic face match the regular where appropriate. The design of several glyphs has been revised; those who prefer the old design should turn on "Style Set 9" in an OpenType-aware application. On the technical side, OpenType support has been improved and extended. TrueType instructions have been supplied for all glyphs: these are a mix of "auto-hints" added by FontForge and instructions written by hand. There are still feature requests that I have not gotten to yet; I'll work on these for the next release. Junicode is a SourceForge project: get it at http://junicode.sourceforge.net/. By request, the current version has also been uploaded to CTAN; I'm not sure how soon it will be available for download there. Best wishes to all, Peter Baker

Dates: Monday 20 July - Friday 24 July Venue: Oxford University Computing Services Full information and online booking: http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/rts/events/2009-07/index.xml This five-day course combines in-depth coverage of the latest version of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines for the encoding of digital text with hands-on practical exercises in their application. If you are a project manager, research assistant, or encoder working on any kind of project concerned with the creation or management of digital text, this course is for you. You should be generally computer literate (web, email, word-processors) for this course. You may already be broadly familiar with the idea of textual editing, perhaps (but not necessarily) with some experience of producing HTML web pages, or of traditional scholarly editing. You should be enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by digital technologies and keen to learn more. You should be prepared to get your hands dirty at the keyboard and you should not be afraid of a little technical jargon.
