numbering lines

Folks, I have a number of text files of poetry that I'd like to add line numbers to for concordancing, starting the numbering at 1 and continuing to the last text line, with the line numbers ending up as part of the resulting text file, each number on the relevant line before the text of that line of verse begins. I've done this before a few times a while ago, but danged if I can remember what I used. I know I didn't write anything to do it, though I assume it's pretty easy to do so. I think it was in a text editor or word processor, but looking at vi and emacs it looks like I can only get the line numbers to display with the file, not to be added to the file, and that's true of some Windows ones as well and of Word, unless there are tricks. The UNIX/Linux "nl" utility does basically what I want (if I pipe the output to a file, I get my text file back but with a line number and a tab added to the beginning of each line), and I can deal with the output but I remember (possibly from one of those technicolor dreams--you'll let me know!) a more interactive, less command-liney, way of doing this that would make this stage easier. Access or Excel

Dear all, I would like to ask for advice whether I should use MS Access or Excel for data crunching. I have been using Excel for some work I am doing on Old English poetry where I am looking at specific features of a fixed set of poems. However, I have decided also to look at other aspects of the same set of poems. To put it in a nutshell, I have three sets of data I want to compare concerning the same poems in order to see where the trends are. I know how to use Excel fairly well - at least to get statistical information - but I have been getting into trouble when trying to find trends across several sets of data. I thought about pivot tables, but I am not sure if that's the way to go, when I think that I may be able to do things easier in Access - even though I don't know anything about how to use it. Which application would you suggest I use? Best, Abdullah Alger

Content Management Systems again

Hi all, I thought I'd report on my experiments with Content Management Systems for my professional web space. I tried out Textpattern http://www.textpattern.com/ and Drupal http://www.drupal.org/. Both are open source, mysql- and php-content management systems. Drupal is by far the more widely used, more flexible, and customisable; textpattern is far more simple, somewhat limited in its organisation (it is really a blogging system that is transforming to a more general CMS). Both work under the major server software, and so are compatible with anything your university or IP is likely to be running. I tried the two systems out on my home (debian/ubuntu linux) and University (a combination of Redhat enterprise linux and MS) servers using mysql. Textpattern set up extremely well under the two conditions (at home, I have root access to everything; at work, I have very limited privileges to the server or the database). Drupal was more problematic, and I never really did get it working exactly the way I wanted. I needed to hack one aspect of textpattern--I need a relatively static front page, and it is set up so the front page works as an RSS server--and I am having trouble with outputting search results. But otherwise I am very happy with it. I was also pleased that textpattern designers tended to use better CSS than drupal designers, though both allow you to use your own CSS. I think if I were setting up a community site, I'd work at getting drupal to work: it looks like the more sophisticated program. For my professional homepage, though I had quite specific needs--good xhtml output, a wiki-based editor, and relatively painless set up. Apart from the hack, textpattern did everything I wanted. Actually, there's a module called Liquid if you want to have wikis with Drupal: http://drupal.org/project/liquid . I haven't tried this particular module, but I've now been using Drupal for two months on the website I maintain (http://www.arlima.net) and it's exceeded all expectations. It seems that there's very little that you can't do with Drupal. It might be worth investigating WordPress <http://wordpress.org/>, as well, as it has similar features to TextPattern. It's a little more blog-oriented, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Personal Web site maintenance

Hi, Does anybody have advice on how to maintain a professional academic homepage--I mean the page one uses for class material, information on research, etc. I tend to use wikis a lot now for personal notekeeping and the like, and I very much like the way they work: very easy to enter new material and edit old material, for example. But, apart from the fact that they can be edited easily, Wikis are obviously more like a card catalogue than a structured site. You can give them structure with categories, but it isn't natural to them. What I'd love to find is some kind of similar system for more structured sets of pages: something where I could easily edit, say, the index page by simply calling it up, and where I could get an over view of the relationships of all the other pages (In general, I try to keep pages where they are so that I can find them again when students need to know what was taught in 1999; that can make things unwieldy): copy previous syllabi and edit the new representations, etc., preferably WYSIWIG or with minimal tagging. Anybody have any suggestions? I don't mind experimenting with server-based software (I set up and break down the wikis all the time, after all), though an export/publish function might be required in the end, as my university space is pretty much for storage I believe rather than running software from. Linux-based solutions are better: I think our university server is Redhat. Thanks in advance, -dan
