I've used FOP for some DocBook-to-PDF transformations and had no trouble with it. But I haven't pressed it very far, and I don't think there were any tables involved. TAN: Unicode, XML, and LaTeX

Hi all, I've been playing with LaTex (actually MikTex) as a TEI2PDF conversion method, and I have a question about unicode support for LaTex that members of this list might have a better handle on than the TUG group seems to. What is the best method of handling UTF-8 XML code in LaTeX2e? Recent discussion (i.e. Feb 2005) on the various mailing lists archived at TUG seem to suggest this is something that is difficult to do and won't really be resolved until LaTeX 3. I'm sure members here have some practical experience. Thanks. -dan P.S. XML Database

I have a couple of questions about XML. Actually, I am not sure if XML is the right programming language to use. I have a database ready to go, but I would like to put it on the web for people to use. I was thinking about linking the db to an xml file then creating an html page that will pull the information from the xml file. But something tells me that this is not the simplest way to do things. I know another way I can do things, which would be completly different and more complex, using a db and C# linking it to an html page extracting the C# and the db from a few lines of javascript. Not pretty! If anyone has some suggestions or knows a good tutorial I am all ears!!! or eyes actually :) Abdullah

What type of server are you running it on? It is a pretty simple thing whether you use xml/xslt or a straight db connection and serverside script. If you email the specifics, I can write up a quick howto. For further transcriptions/mss online: though not a manuscript, the entire transcribed text and images of the two Caxton editions of the Canterbury Tales are online at http://www.cta.dmu.ac.uk/Caxtons this is also available on CD-ROM, as are various other publications of the Canterbury Tales project, amounting to over a 100,000 lines of manuscript transcription best wishes Peter Robinson

Dear list members, I´m not sure if this is the right forum for such a query, but I´m sure you will know if anyone does! I´ve found lots of on-line resources with illutrations and descriptions of manuscripts. I´d like to find an example which I could use to illustrate, for the same text, 1) the manuscript itself 2) a diplomatic transcription 3) a normalized transcription and (if possible) 4) a translation. The point is to illustrate the various possibilities to students who may not have thought about manuscripts. It strikes me that this sort of information is more likely to be on a "teaching" website (in paleography, perhaps?) than anywhere else. Any suggestions where I should start looking would be greatly appreciated!
