Digital Classics Workshop: 3D approaches to cultural heritage and landscape Thursday, Dec 10, 2015, 10:00-17:30 Institute of Historical Research training room Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU There are a few places left on a training workshop for postgraduate students and researchers on the use of 3D approaches in the study of cultural heritage artefacts and landscapes. The workshop will offer a basic introduction to the principles behind 3D imaging, modelling and representation of terrain and elevation, and how these can be used in research as well as visualisation. It will also give participants hands-on experience using simple and free software packages to produce complete 3D models and visualizations, with methods easily transferable to their own research. No previous digital experience is required, but participants should bring a laptop and a digital camera or smartphone and be prepared to install some free software in advance of the workshop. The workshop will be taught by Valeria Vitale (KCL/RHUL) and Gabriel Bodard (ICS). This workshop has been made possible by the generous support of the LAHP and AHRC. Registration is free. Supported by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch art conservation fund, the aim of the project is to conserve, digitise and research four early Gospel Books made in Irish monastic foundations: Codex Usserianus Primus (TCD MS 55), the Book of Mulling (TCD MS 60), the Book of Dimma (TCD MS 59), and the Garland of Howth (TCD MS 56). To share with you progress and discoveries, we have just launched a blog which will be our project diary. Leeds DigiHum, Conor Kostick on 'Digital Linguistics and Climate Change'

Dear all (with apologies for cross-posting) The University of Leeds Digital Humanities Series is immensely excited to present the illustrious Dr Conor Kostick of the University of Nottingham for our next talk on Monday 2nd November. Dr Kostick will be talking about his current research into historical climate change as well as his work on digital linguistics in relation to the Crusades. His current research relates to understanding our environmental history in order to ascertain a more detailed picture of the climate in the late antique and early medieval periods. Recent advances in scientific research on the period has provided greater data. Combined with the increasing ability to collate large numbers of historical European documents this has led to an unprecedented opportunity to explore the effects of historical climate change, and this talk will explore what this evidence can tell us about the period. Dr Kostick will also be sharing some of the digital methods and techniques he has used in his many publications on the Crusades, a subject which remains close to his heart. We hope you're as excited as we are about this talk, which promises to be an insightful seminar from a very distinguished scholar and author, and we really hope lots of you can make it. The seminar will start at about 6:00PM on Monday 2nd Nov in LHRI Seminar Room 1, where there will be tea and biscuits before the talk, and will run until roughly 7:30PM, after which some manner of dinner will likely be on the cards. Dear colleagues, Novosibirsk State University and Textual Heritage scholarly community invite you to participate in the international research school “Textual Heritage and Digital Technologies” (El'Manuscript*–*2015) for young scholars. The current school upholds the tradition of research schools initiated in Izhevsk in 2006 and continued in Kazan, Ufa, Petrozavodsk, Varna (Bulgary) (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 respectively). The school will be held on November 10-28 in Novosibirsk, Russia, and will include lectures, workshops and presentation sessions aiming to familiarise students, postgraduate students and young scholars with the latest achievements of the world's research in the field of studying old, medieval and modern texts using digital technologies, new methodology, software and tools. Courses will be taught by well-known specialists from Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Slovakia working on computer and corpus linguistics and corpus textual scholarship, digital strategies of historical factual account, text encoding and markup that aim to provide a possibility of digital data exchange and research on textual heritage of the Old Russian literature and Slavonic literatures. Ad fontes hacks Cappelli

with apologies for cross-posting The Ad fontes project (www.adfontes.uzh.ch <http://www.adfontes.uzh.ch/>) is going to hack Cappelli! We want to digitally hack the Lexicon abbreviaturarum of Adriano Cappelli into pieces in order to digitize and make each and every abbreviation systematically searchable. The „Cappelli“, printed in 1899, is a benchmark book for abbreviations in Latin and Italian, containing about 15'000 abbreviations. By crowdsourcing Cappelli, the abbreviations are going to be searchable beyond alphabetical traits. Browsing through the pages of Cappelli will be a thing of the past. You will be able to filter the abbreviations by identified letters or the position of abbreviation or contraction signs. The data gathered will be made available to the public for free (using a creative commons license). We aim to digitize all of Cappelli’s abbreviations by the end of 2015. **Apologies for cross-posting & please distribute freely and widely!** Programmer Analyst for the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries With a growing collection of over 225,000 records representing approximately 100,000 manuscripts, the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts (SDBM <http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/schoenberg/index.html> ) is the largest freely available repository of data on manuscript books produced before 1600. The SDBM, maintained by the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, is being redeveloped into an online, open-access, collaborative tool for researching the historic and current locations of the world's pre-modern manuscripts. We are seeking to fill a two-year, full-time, NEH-funded Programmer Analyst position to take over the technical development of the New SDBM. Working directly with the project manager and the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies (SIMS <http://schoenberginstitute.org/> ) Digital Content Programmer, the PA will continue the development of the New SDBM, a crowd-sourced application providing web, mobile, and application interfaces for the discovery, access, and entry of manuscript data, using the Ruby on Rails framework, jQuery, Blacklight, and AngularJS. The PA will also work with Library Technology Services (LTS) to integrate the New SDBM with the Library's Digital Library Architecture (DLA).
