As regards Exeter UP's digital Exeter Book, I understand from Exeter UP that they are still publishing it, and hope to have it out soon (I vaguely think they were aiming for this autumn, but I may be misremembering that). It is truly fabulous, a great piece of work. Samuel Fanous from the Bodleian just gave me the grand tour and I have to say I am impressed. Beautiful images of every page, some terrific features (such as going from an edited text directly to the spot in the mss where the text is, even if in the mss it begins in the middle of the line--the markers go to the first word of the edited line and bracket it for you), bibliography, search capability, etc. The magnification of the images works fairly well I think, and on a powerful PC rather than a laptop would be able to have several windows open at once. The only drawback is that they chose to use the Kennedy translations of the poems, but then most of us aren't interested in the translations. Reasonable price too...regularly £50 (49.99). I'm buying this one when I get home. BTW Martin, I dropped your name to Samuel (I know, I'm a name dropper) and he'd like to meet you and talk to you. TAN: XML editors

Now I understand why thing are so quiet around here: everyone's in Leeds. Still, maybe I can get some guidance from the group. I'm looking for a good XML editor, either cross-platform (e.g. Java) or written for Linux/UNIX. I want the usual things: support for both DTDs and Schemas, auto-completion of tags and attributes, etc. I don't mind paying if the price is not outrageous. But here's the big thing: I've been using Emacs/PSGML and jEdit with the XML plugin, and both are good, but both require that one use the mouse extensively. I've always hated moving my hand back and forth between mouse and keyboard, but lately I've managed to acquire a condition (temporary I trust) that makes it painful to use the mouse more than a little. So what I'm looking for is an XML editor that can be operated largely with the keyboard, with as little mouse input as possible. Suggestions/sharing of experiences most welcome. Peter

Call for Papers: Digital Medievalist Journal

Call for Papers [Please Cross-Post] The Digital Medievalist (DM) is a new on-line and refereed journal intended for medievalists working with digital media. The first issue is scheduled for publication this fall, with subsequent issues in Spring 2005 and Summer 2005. The journal is edited by the executive of the Digital Medievalist Project, hosts of the <dm-l(a)uleth.ca> mailing list: Peter Baker, Martin Foys, Murray McGillivray, Kenna Olsen, Daniel Paul O'Donnell, Roberto Rosselli del Turco, and Elizabeth Solopova. Our second issue will include a selection of papers on technological topics from Medieval Conferences in Kalamazoo and Leeds 2004 as well as other articles. DM accepts work of original research and scholarship, notes on technological topics, commentary pieces discussing developments in the field, bibliographic and review articles, and project reports describing beginning, on-going, or completed projects. Contributors may also describe tools and utilities they have developed, stylesheets, markup-methods, imaging techniques, project management methods, etc. Future editions will also contain reviews of publications, web-sites and digital projects. All contributions are refereed by authorities in humanities computing. Contributions to DM should concern topics likely to be of interest to medievalists working with digital media, though they need not be exclusively medieval in focus. Contributions should be of an appropriate length to the subject under discussion. We anticipate most will be between 1000 and 10,000 words. Our preferred format is TEI-Lite xml. If you would like to discuss alternative submission formats, please contact the editorial board. Submissions received by September 30, 2004 will be eligible for consideration for publication in the inaugural (Fall 2004) issue. Contributions received after that date may be considered for subsequent issues. Yes, it's up and running. Nice site too. I'm browsing with Mozilla Firefox 0.7. Now I wonder what I am doing right (or wrong?) Still works fine overhere on the http://lingo.dcf.uvic.ca:8080/exist/graves/index.xml URL. http://lingo.dcf.uvic.ca does say 'PHP works' also to me. I usually do not have problems connecting to any portnumber. Very very odd indeed.
