Dear colleagues,
Let me share with you an invitation to a webinar taking place on April 19 from 15.00 CET as a part of the Hagener Forschungsdialog organized by the Fernuniversität Hagen.
How even a small project can build a large manuscript database: lessons learned from the Innovating Knowledge project
The webinar is specifically intended for those who are contemplating developing an online manuscript database and would like to get practical tips about how to start a database project and manage database development. We will be also talking about the growing ecosystem of small digital manuscript metadata projects (or SDMMPs) in Medieval Studies that has sprung up in the last decade and see some examples of successful SDMMPs.
If you are intrigued by the topic, you can register for the webinar until this Sunday (16 April) at: https://www.fernuni-hagen.de/geschichte/praesenzen/lg1/0423-online-vortrag_…

Hello,
I am writing to invite you to participate in a study we are conducting on understanding the use of digital technologies by scholars of medieval studies.
Principal Investigator: Krishna Venkatasubramanian, PhD
Research purpose: The aim of this study is to understand the use of digital technologies by scholars of medieval studies and to see how well these tools work for them, when they fail, and what can be done to improve them. We also plan to see how disability and chronic conditions affect these trends.
Protocol: We will be conducting online interviews via videoconference for this study. This study entails a set of interviews, approximately 45-60 minutes long, with individual staff members. They will be conducted remotely via videoconference, e.g., Zoom.
Video recordings will be made during all sessions of the study. The recordings will then be transcribed, and the original recording will be deleted once the transcription is verified to be accurate.
Benefits: There are no anticipated benefits to the participants other than the study affording ideas for better designs of digital tools and technologies for scholars of medieval studies.
Eligibility: Participants for this study should be adults who are active research scholars in one of the various sub-disciplines of medieval studies. In addition, they must: use digital technologies for their research in medieval studies; be willing to use Zoom to participate in the interview, which will be recorded for transcription purposes; and be currently located in the US or Canada (due to restrictions on compensating participants). Researchers with a chronic health condition and/or disability are particularly welcome.
Time commitment: 45-60 minutes
Mode of interview: All interviews will be conducted remotely via Zoom or other teleconferencing system conducive to the participants.
Compensation: You will be compensated $50 in the form of gift card for your participation.
This research has been approved by The University of Rhode Island Institutional Review Board.
Please let us know if you are interested in participating.
Thanks very much,

[apologies for cross-posting]
Dear colleagues,
we are very happy to announce the first joint publication of RIDE
(Review Journal for Digital Editions) and the NFDI consortium Text+
(https://www.text-plus.org/). The NFDI is the German National Research
Data Infrastructure (https://www.nfdi.de/) intiative which was
launched in 2020 and is working to shape the future of research data
management in Germany across all disciplines through dedicated
consortia. Since 2021, the NFDI Text+ consortium is dedicated to the
domain of text- and language-based data, particularly collections,
lexical resources, and scholarly editions.
In volume 16 (https://ride.i-d-e.de/issues/issue-16/) of RIDE, five
editions were reviewed with a specific focus on the FAIR Data
Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). What does
FAIRness mean in the context of digital scholarly editions? Can the
FAIR principles be applied to digital edition projects at all? How do
we measure their FAIRness? This volume aims to foster a conversation
about these questions.
While the majority of the editions under review may not be editions of
medieval materials (although the Königsfelden edition is), we believe
that the topic may still be of interest to the editorial community at
large.
The following contributions are included in volume 16:
* Gengnagel, Tessa; Neuber, Frederike; Schulz, Daniela. „EDITORIAL:
FAIR Enough? Evaluating Digital Scholarly Editions and the Application
of the FAIR Data Principles." RIDE 16 (2023). doi:
https://doi.org/10.18716/ride.a.16.0.
* Untner, Laura. „Review of ‚Walter Benjamin Digital'." RIDE 16
(2023). doi: https://doi.org/10.18716/ride.
a.16.1.
* Galka, Selina. „Review of ‚Digitale Edition und Kommentierung der
Tagebücher des Fürsten Christian II. von Anhalt-Bernburg
(1599-1656)'." RIDE 16 (2023). doi:
https://doi.org/10.18716/ride.a.16.2.
* Görmar, Maximilian. „Review of ‚Briefportal Leibniz'." RIDE 16
(2023). doi: https://doi.org/10.18716/ride.a.16.3.
* Frühwirt, Timo; Meyer, Sandra; Stoxreiter, Daniel. „Review of
‚Theodor Fontane's Notebooks: A 'Digital Genetic-Critical and
Commented Edition''." RIDE 16 (2023). doi:
https://doi.org/10.18716/ride.a.16.4.
* Pollin, Christopher. „A Review of the Königsfelden Online Edition."
RIDE 16 (2023). doi: https://doi.org/10.18716/ride.a.16.5.
A second joint volume, again with a focus on the FAIR principles, is
already under way and can be expected to be published later this
spring in a "rolling release". Suggestions for reviews or interest in
becoming a reviewer can still be expressed to the editors via
ride-textplus[at]i-d-e.de (see also the Call for Reviews:
https://ride.i-d-e.de/reviewers/call-for-reviews/ride-textplus-en/).
Enjoy the (FAIR) RIDE!
On behalf of the editorial team,
Tessa Gengnagel, Frederike Neuber and Daniela Schulz

Call for Papers: Workshop on Extracting Heterogeneous Reference Data (Frankfurt/Hybrid, 15/16 May 2023)
https://mpilhlt.github.io/reference-extraction/workshop-2023/cfp/
Recognition and parsing of references to literature is a long-standing problem in the processing of historical or scholarly texts in the domains of the humanities, law and the social sciences. We invite contributions to a hybrid workshop addressing what the current state of the art in reference extraction is and how recent technological advances like large language models may help improve it.
The workshop will be held in a hybrid format on 15/16 May 2023 at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory, Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
We are calling for contributions, to the following and related topics/questions:
· Problem/task definition
* What are use cases and current projects?
* What precise (sub-)tasks can we identify?
· State of the art
* What is the performance of current approaches?
* How can the newly emerging technologies be leveraged to improve upon existing solutions?
· Pooling of tools and resources
* What training corpora are available? Which are needed, and in what format?
* What workflows/toolchains do we need?
· Future work
* What infrastructure is required/available?
* Should we establish a Shared Task? Write a whitepaper? Hold a hackathon?
Please also consider contributing if you have suitable training data or if you are working on related tasks like preparation of datasets, linking of references, etc.
Please send your submission to wagner(a)lhlt.mpg.de. Deadline for submissions is Feb 28th 2023. All submitters will be notified of their status by March 13th 2023.
