International Seminar
"Approaching Byzantium Through Seals: A Digital Exhibition"
University of Cologne
The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Cologne invites applications for the International Seminar “Approaching Byzantium through seals: a digital exhibition”, organised in the framework of the project “DiBS – Creating a Sustainable Digital Infrastructure for Research-Based Teaching in Byzantine Studies”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
Byzantine seals have emerged lately as a valuable resource for the study of Byzantium. This course aims to bring together students from various parts of the world and provide them with the skills to analyse and use seals as a source for understanding Byzantine society and culture, without requiring an extensive background in sigillography. At the same time, the students will contribute to the creation of a digital scholarly exhibition, which will revolve around some themes related to the topic of the Seminar.
Structure: Two introductory sessions (17.11.2023 and 24.11.2023) after the end of which students will be handed out assignments with the aim of analysing seals under the prism of specific questions and topics, such as identity, relation between text and image, expressions of piety, and individual representation. At the end of the semester there will be a week-long workshop (19.02.–23.02.2024) with presentations and discussion of the commentary and the texts prepared by the students.
Aims: The participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the creation of an online exhibition that is intended to serve as reference to the wider scholarly community and public, by introducing seals as a crucial source for the society and culture of Byzantium. The exhibition will consist of texts on topics related to the history and culture of Byzantium, focused on a set number of seals selected out for this purpose. These texts will be produced by the students and the instructor during the course.
Application: Please fill in the application form and the motivation statement (no longer than 500 words) describing the academic achievements, the scholarly interests, and the reasons for applying to this course. The deadline for applications is 15 September 2023. Successful applicants will be informed by late September/early October. Please address any queries to: c.malatras(a)uni-koeln.de<mailto:c.malatras@uni-koeln.de>.

A CALL FOR PAPERS
Leeds International Medieval Congress, 1-4 July 2024
https://www.imc.leeds.ac.uk/imc-2024/ for in-person presentations.
Medieval Baptismal Fonts: Artistic and Cultural Responses to Crisis in the Middle Ages
Crisis changed communities, perspectives and introduced new ways of interpreting and viewing the world. The liturgical vessel, known as a baptismal font, reflect not just liturgical or religious changes but also societal, cultural, judicial, political and economic disruptions in their designs, ornamentation, production and inscriptions. Some of the most extraordinary fonts are often overlooked as they are still located within communities today, having acquired an intimate relationship in the memory and identity of communities.
The planned session at IMC 2024 hopes to attract papers which seek to expose some of these major 'crisis' or pivotal turning points that have shaped and transformed these liturgical vessels from the Early to the Late Middle Ages.
If you are interested in presenting a 20-min paper please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words with a CV. Send to Harriet Sonne de Torrens, harriet.sonne(a)utoronto.ca<mailto:harriet.sonne@utoronto.ca> by September 20, 2023.

Session I: CRISIS IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES RESEARCH: The Transformation of Academic Research Libraries' Role in Digital Research Projects
This session examines the current 'lay of the land' and the current status of the magnus shift that has occurred in the area of support from academic research libraries for digital humanities research projects. In recent decades several major academic libraries have reframed their earlier supportive role, leaving researchers unprepared for the next steps. Possible paper topics may include:
* Case studies documenting experiences and shifts in academic communities.
* Current options or trends within academic research communities that have either replaced libraries' support for digital research projects or developed other options to support digital research projects.
* Historical overviews of the role of academic libraries and why there has been this magnus shift - why has this happened?
* What are the ramifications of this shift to not just researchers but academic research libraries?
* What are the most viable and long-term support initiatives today for digital humanities researchers in Medieval Studies within academic communities?
* An examination of the growing gap that between academic programs and courses dedicated to the digital humanities and the actual support for digital humanities researchers.
*
Session II: CRISIS IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES RESEARCH: International Collaboration for the Sustainability of Digital Research Projects - It is Needed - But is it Feasible? What Next?
This session examines community, national and international possibilities to collaborate with medievalists working with digital humanities research projects to ensure the longevity of long-standing research projects. Possible paper topics may include:
* Visionary views of international collaboration
* Uniting digital researchers working in the Middle Ages? Do we need an association to address specific issues facing long-standing projects? Who do medievalists collectively need to do?
* New ways of approaching the problems of sustainability and longevity of specialized areas of digital humanities research
* Linked Open Data, the challenges and advantages when collaborating - who is doing what? What vocabularies are being utilized by medievalists in LOD?
* Information about the EU consortia seeking to address the current crisis in digital humanities research - who is doing what? Is it possible for North American and EU institutions to collaborate to address this crisis? What are the challenges for Medievalists?

VIII Jornadas de Estudios Patrísticos / VIII Conference of Patristics Studies
Orden de San Agustín - Biblioteca Agustiniana de Buenos Aires
[VIII Jornada de Estudios Patrísticos Flyer JPG.JPG]
Call of Papers - Deadline: 28 Ago 2023
«Ascesis, silencio y huida.
https://www.bibcisao.com/bibliotheca

Lexical semantic change detection in Latin: a use-case on medical Latin
Paola Marongiu (University of Neuchâtel) & Barbara McGillivray (KCL)
Friday 14 July 2023, 5:00PM – 6:00PM
Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House London
This seminar will be held in the MakerSpace, Room 265, 2nd floor, Senate House.
It will also be livestreamed at: https://youtu.be/wDAMEVHKBmA
Lexical semantic change (LSC) is the linguistic phenomenon by which words change their meaning over time. Recently, there has been a growing interest in applying computational resources to investigate LSC. Among these resources, diachronic word embeddings have been applied with success to LSC research in various languages, among which Latin (Sprugnoli et al. 2020). In this seminar, I will report on the results of the evaluation of diachronic word embeddings to trace LSC in Latin, with a case-study on medical Latin.
The lexicon of technical or specialised languages generally shows examples of LSC (Roelli 2021). The lexicon of medical Latin in particular is rich in polysemous words that have acquired more specialised meanings, developed from more basic or common ones through various types of semantic change (Langslow 2000; Roelli 2021). Examples are forceps (or forfex) from ‘tongs’ to ‘surgical pincers’, mola from ‘mill-stone’ to ‘molar tooth’, causa from ‘cause (of a disease)’ to ‘disease’ (Langslow, 2000: 155;165;182). Moreover, Latin medical texts cover a diachronic span going from the 1st century BCE (Celsus’ De medicina) to the 19th century CE (von Bene’s Elementa medicinae practicae), which allows for a diachronic study of semantic changes on technical terms.
After a short introduction on the application of diachronic word embeddings to LSC detection, I will present the results of this case-study on medical Latin. In particular, I will elaborate on the strategies implemented for the evaluation of the word embeddings, based on previous work on Latin (Sprugnoli et al. 2020). This will comprise i) the presentation of the gold standard dataset built for the evaluation by combining lexical and lexicographic resources for Latin; ii) a discussion on the issues of applying diachronic word embeddings to LSC detection in Latin, specifically on medical Latin lexicon, and possible ways for improvement.
