Climate Communication - thinking like our youth - funny and meaningful

Dear Colleagues, My nephew suggested another means of communicating with young people; very funny, with a powerful element of truth. Do we speak their language or do we speak some foreign language they do not understand? Here is what he said. “Hey Jim, Deep down you are an energy conservation activist. So that basically means you can call yourself, a Power Ranger. And I think a lot more people would join the cause under that name alone. For example, Hey, would you like to be an energy conservation activist with me. I would reply with, no clue what you just said, I am going to have to pass. OR, Hey, want to be a Power Ranger with me? And as you go on to explain what it is that really means, I will tell you, holy crap I'm in. You had me at Power Ranger........ Just a suggestion I thought i'd throw your way!!” Perhaps we are should all be Power Rangers! Best, Jim

Climate Communication - supporting the political and economic battles around GHG reductions and renewables

Hello colleagues, I'm sure some of you have been following the political and economic battle going on regarding renewables versus coal fired electricity in Boulder Colorado. Perhaps the time has come for us to support these type of local initiatives? Here is one online media discussion of the debate. http://www.upworthy.com/a-bunch-of-young-geniuses-just-made-a-corrupt-corpo… Your input and discussion on how the climate change science, communication and education community might support such local initiatives is invited. At the Chapman climate meeting there was substantial discussion, both formal and informal, about how we may proceed with some level of support in the public debates. I suggest that providing good science talks in Boulder while this is ongoing would be an excellent contribution. Your comments and discussion are most welcome. Best, Jim
