GC018: Co-Producing Science, Co-Creating Solutions: Enlisting Citizen Scientists alongside Professional Researchers to Expand the Reach and Power of GEC Data

Session Description: Researcher and citizen alliances are fundamental to addressing impacts, mitigation, adaptation and communication about Global Environmental Change. Understanding local and regional changes often requires more data than research programs can afford. The Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count has a track record of more than 100 years; the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network provides data to the National Weather Service; other recent, cutting-edge projects from Trout Unlimited and the Public Lab use open source software and commercial off-the-shelf tools to help close research data gaps. These projects engage the general public and create informed and empowered citizen solution teams that pilot solutions to regional and global environment problems. Join us to share your citizen engagement project and to learn more about such forms of engagement.
