Dear all, We are happy to announce a workshop on the perennial question: “Does Intellectual History need Digital Humanities?” on 11.-12.12.2018. This workshop is the second symposium on Computational Approaches to Intellectual History and the History of Philosophy organised by Helsinki Computational History Group. In the Spring 2017, the Never Mine the Mind? -seminar focused on demonstrating exploratory work necessary for an understanding of how methods of data and text mining can be useful in the study of intellectual history and the history of philosophy. Digital humanities scholarship continues to be driven by work at the intersections of a range of distinct disciplines and an ethical commitment to preserve and broaden access to cultural materials. Focused on these issues of social justice, we invite work at the intersections of critical DH; race and ethnicity; feminism, intersectionality, and gender; and anti-colonial and postcolonial frameworks to participate. Given the growth of these fields within the digital humanities, particularly in under-resourced and underrepresented areas, a number of complex issues surface, including, among others, questions of ownership, cultural theft, virtual exploitation, digital rights, endangered data <http://endangereddataweek.org/>, and the digital divide. DH communities have raised and responded to these issues, pushing the field forward. We view the 2019 symposium as an opportunity to broaden the conversation about these issues. Scholarship that works across borders with foci on transnational partnerships and globally accessible data is especially welcome. Additionally, we define the term "humanities" rather broadly to incorporate the discussion of issues that encourage interdisciplinary understanding of the humanities. The conference aims at reflecting on the new possibilities that the digital yields for pedagogy, teaching, and scholarly research: how will these transform teaching in the humanities? What contributions can humanistic cultural critique offer to the digital revolution? What is the connection with the digitization plan for Universities outlined by the Ministry? It also concerns the Digital Humanities as a new discipline, and this brings forward further considerations: how can the new professional figure of the digital humanist be developed? Which areas of knowledge define the Digital Humanities as a subject of study, research, and teaching? How can we recognise, classify, describe, and evaluate research efforts in the Digital Humanities? Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age: IIlluminations: Manuscript, Medium, Message<https://www.library.upenn.edu/about/events/kislak/SIMS/ljs-symposium11> November 15-17, 2018 Manuscript illumination has often been considered in relation to the texts it accompanies, but rarely in terms of its interplay with other artistic media. Historically, however, the technique was closely associated with other forms of artistic expression and served as a crucial point of contact and transfer for visual motifs across space and time. The goal of this year's symposium is to examine cases of intermedial exchange through the lenses of technique, style, iconography, social context, and cultural geography, while also posing broader questions about the deep connections between the craft of illumination and other arts more widely. Of special interest will be insights gained from the technical examination of works in different media, new comparisons made possible by digital technology, and the discovery of linkages once obscured by strict historiographical divisions The program will begin Thursday evening at 5:00 pm on November 15, 2018, at the Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central Library, with a keynote lecture by Professor Susie Nash of the Courtauld Institute of Art. Late Middle English digital editions

Hi there, Occasionally I trawl through the excellent catalogue of digital editions at https://dig-ed-cat.acdh.oeaw.ac.at/ looking especially at editions of medieval texts. Mostly this is for examples for teaching about editions, courses, workshops, to look at in comparison with others. I was trying to find a good example of some digital editions of late Middle English (~Chaucer onwards) that I wasn't already aware of from this catalogue. Any suggestions of ones not included in it? Thanks for your help, James

Best regards Summary Une édition critique cherche à reconstituer un texte ancien sur la base de ses témoins manuscrits et de sa tradition indirecte. Outre l’établissement de ce texte, l’édition critique inclut une liste de variantes de différents témoins ainsi que, généralement, un apparat des sources, des notes scientifiques et un index. L’outil informatique s’avère être d’une aide précieuse pour l’établissement d’une telle édition critique, que ce soit pour la comparaison des témoins et leur classement ou pour la mise en forme proprement dite de l’édition critique. La présente journée se propose d’étudier un aspect rarement abordé dans cette problématique : la manière dont peut être encodée l’édition critique elle-même, c’est-à-dire l’ensemble constitué par le texte établi, les variantes des manuscrits et les différents apparats. En effet, si tout travail informatique débute nécessairement en définissant comment structurer les données, le choix d’une structure particulière n’est pas anodin. Non seulement ce choix conditionne en tout ou partie les traitements possibles mais, plus fondamentalement, il reflète une certaine compréhension des données. À ce titre, la structure informatique d’une édition critique ne constitue pas un détail technique, mais témoigne d’abord d’une perspective philologique sur ce que sont un texte, des variantes, des témoins.
