Dear colleagues, Please consider submitting your abstract to our AGU 2020 session on climate solutions for agriculture While it is debated how much agriculture contributes to climate change through its emissions of carbon from land use changes, as well as methane and nitrous oxides from its practices, there is no doubt that reversing the first, and lowering the latter two, would buy us time to transition the world to a net zero carbon society/economy. New experiments are conducted worldwide on what could work in agriculture, outreach is conducted, and national estimates are updated. Founded on the principle of liberal education, the University of Lethbridge is a comprehensive academic and research university that provides its students with a personal and engaging learning experience. At the graduate level, the university offers thesis- and course-based doctoral, masters, diploma, and certificate programs, and attracts highly qualified postdoctoral fellows. With fifteen transdisciplinary centres and institutes, the University of Lethbridge strives to produce research outcomes that address the problems and opportunities of society in the 21st Century. This includes the Prentice Institute, which is an endowed Institute, thanks to the generosity of the family of John Prentice. The Director of the Prentice Institute will work in collaboration with key stakeholders to implement and advance the Institute’s Research, Academic, and Strategic Plans, and to foster success in all of its initiatives and priorities. Valuable strengths would include recognized expertise in formal demographics, including strong statistical and methodological techniques, as well as a broad knowledge of social demography and economics, related to themes that may include income inequality and family structure, migration, the environment, aging and fertility, health, and labor markets. The successful candidate will also bring demonstrated ability to navigate academic administration, with exceptional interpersonal and advocacy skills, as well as demonstrated commitment to cross-cultural and interdisciplinary competencies, intercultural sensitivities and collegial governance. That paper stated the needs of society included more comprehensive information, understanding and technologies … 'to move toward a more sustainable biosphere – one which is ecologically sound, economically feasible, and socially just.' This required 'new fundamental research, faster and more effective transmission of new and existing knowledge to policy and decision-makers, and better communication of this knowledge to the public'. Over twenty years later, and confronted with a global climatic emergency, we must examine successes and failures, and develop strategies to break down existing barriers to progress. A rebalancing is required, from the 'discovery' to the 'delivery' of societal values and commitments. The focus collection will explore practical ways to accelerate societal action on climate change. Most focus collection articles are invited, but unsolicited contributions are also encouraged.
