Dear all, Below a proposal for a GO::DH session at the DH 2013. Ideas? Suggestions? Comments? The application deadline is Thursday so there is not much time left but there is still time for changes. greetings from Philadelphia marcus waiting for the hurricane ============================= ADHO GO:DH Session on “Chinese DH” The newly founded ADHO initiative Global Outreach (GO::DH) aims to facilitate communication between the various ADHO committees and emergent DH groups and activities in countries which are not yet well represented within ADHO. This session proposal is one of GO::DH attempts to raise the visibility of underrepresented communities, in this case, of work done in the Chinese speaking world. Like all cultures, China is faced with the question of how to model its cultural heritage in a digital environment. Comparable only to India in historic range, geographic size, and population, there are various initiatives in China, Hongkong and Taiwan that work on solutions to digitize and distribute their shared cultural heritage. After successful international cooperation yielded the Unicode standard, which resolved the pressing issue of how to represent the logographic writing system in computing, continued dialog on standards and practices in DH is of mutual interest for both ADHO members and the emerging DH centers in China, Hongkong and Taiwan. In East Asia, efforts by Japanese practitioners of DH has already resulted in the foundation of the Japanese Association of Digital Humanities, which joined ADHO last year, an important development in the globalization of the field. In the Chinese speaking world too there is great potential for dialog, synergy and cooperation between DH centers to discuss standards and practices. Communication about shared standards generally improves the chances that the results are interchangeable, avoids duplication of efforts, and increases efficiency. As internationalization and support for developing, regional centers is part of ADHO’s mission, the members of the GO::DH feel it is desirable to organize a roundtable on “Chinese DH” with representatives from China, Taiwan, Hongkong and perhaps Singapore to speak about the situation of DH in their societies and the prospects and potential problems for further collaboration with both within East Asia as well as with ADHO members. Following a discussion on the globaloutlookdh list regarding the possible format for such a roundtable, Neil Fraistat, the current Chair of ADHO, offered to split the ADHO business meeting and use the second 45 min section to a ADHO GO::DH roundtable on “Chinese DH”. We plan to invite at least one representative from China, Hongkong and Taiwan to speak for 10 min to provide the audience with a quick overview of activities, followed by a 15 min roundtable discussion with the speakers and one or two GO::DH members. Possible questions to explore: What are the prospects for further national or regional organization in East Asia? How can we make better use of existing structures to further the globalization of Chinese DH? How viable, e.g., would be a panel in Chinese at the next DH? ADHO GO::DH Session (45 min) 1. Hi all, I'm attaching a revised terms of reference drawing from the discussions we had last week. I believe I have everything we discussed. The only thing I'm not 100% sure I've got right is the structure of the executive: I've said here is it volunteers + representatives from Constituent Organisations and under admissions. The only unsure bit was whether the COs should have ex officio space on the SIG exec. or not. Neil: if this is ready to go, what is the next step? Should we look into a DH Session for Nebraska

Hi all, While we are hammering out terms of reference, a concrete work item. One useful way of getting the ball rolling might be to schedule a session at DH. I could see two possibilities: one is to look at the larger issue of the lack of DH in low and mid income economies; the other is to concentrate on a specific area. Given the interests and ongoing activities, it seems to me that Latin America/Caribbean and/or PRC are the two best candidates. What do others think? A really interesting session might be DH in/on China, for example. There is lots of great work going on. Terms of reference, redux

Here is the state of play in terms of the GO::DH structure and terms of reference as I understand the discussion. If this seems reasonable, I could add it to the draft description I sent round and we could submit it to the ADHO Steering Committee for discussion. 1) The organisation is a Special Interest Group focussed on ensuring issues in the global participation in DH are part of our general discourse at ADHO and serving as a facilitator between ADHO, its committees, COs, and members and those communities that are not represented by ADHO in any significant fashion. 2) Tasks include advocacy, research, and facilitation. GO::DH is not a replacement or competitor for any ADHO committee: its goal is to act as a resource and prompt, rather than an executor. 3) There is no limit on general membership. The important thing is that you are interested in the issue(s). 4) The group is to be led by a small executive made up of people who are willing to take a more active role in proposing activities, interacting with ADHO, conducting research, and the like. Ideally this will involve people with interests in various parts of the globe. 5) Participation by ADHO COs and committees would be extremely welcome if this seems wise to them and the ADHO SC: two possibilities for this participation might be that each CO appoint a representative to the GO::DH executive, or, if a lighter footprint is desired, that the SC appoint a couple of representatives to act for all (my preference would be the first option, I think). 6) When it seems desirable or practical, the SIG would break into smaller working groups focussed on a particular region or problem. Currently there is probably enough interest and participation for a group on China, for example. I hope this is both accurate and the right combination of useful structure with minimal overhead and maximum flexibility. Apologies for a third email in as many minutes. But I thought splitting the two big issues up might make them easier to digest. In terms of tasks, I was thinking that there were two main ones: providing intelligence to ADHO (and the High Income Economies DH world in general) about opportunities and people in the relevant Mid and Low Income Economies and researching, discussing, and creating fora for discussing ways of integrating the two worlds more closely. The first task really involves relying on our native intelligence and knowledge of people and institutions: GO::DH in this sense is really just a conduit through which we can pass on information about conferences, meetings, potential partners back and forth between the ADHO world and the world that is not part of ADHO. The second is a little more actual work, and would involve trying to proactively discover and promote connections: for example, by organising sessions at conferences, thinking about special issues of journals or collections of essays on the topic, and so on. There's a lot of good work already going on--we should be in closer contact with the people running THaT Camp Carrib, for example. But that kind of work it seems to me would fall into the second category. Thinking about organisation

Hi all, Picking up on Neil's questions, I've been thinking about the organisational issue and the tasks issue over the weekend, and, indeed, discussing them with Titi. In terms of organisation, it seems to me that the most efficient use of everybody's time might be to set ourselves up along the lines of a Special Interest Group. This would mean that there was no set limit on membership, which given our interest would be counterproductive anyway. Within this group, people have clearly different interests and more importantly knowledge of local conditions and people, so it seems to me to make sense to allow the larger group to organise into different working groups: e.g. Africa, Middle East, China, India/Pakistan, Southern Asia, etc. It seems to me that we can be relatively agnostic about how (and whether) these groups form. We clearly have a large group interested in China already: that seems to me to represent a solid opportunity to build a little work group; we have fewer people thinking about the Middle East at the moment, so there's not really a need, probably, for a working group there till we get some people. In my experience, nothing ever gets done if there isn't some leadership on a group like this, so perhaps it might make sense to have a small executive of 4-6 people who could act as point people--helping facilitate ideas as they develop and keeping the rest of us up-to-date on what's going on. What do people think? I'm a big fan of letting administration grow organically and not wasting too much time at the beginning planning structures before you get a sense for how things will develop. But it seems to me that we could even now benefit from an exec+membership model, defining ourselves as a SIG, and perhaps organising a China-Focussed working group.
