Please see For Participants <http://dloc.com/l/teach/forparticipants> for more information on the Institute phases and funding. ________________________________ Call for Applications Call for Applications: “Migration, Mobility, and Sustainability: Caribbean Studies and Digital Humanities Institute,” a 2019-2020 NEH Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities Deadline: Applications are due Friday, February 1, 2019 Application Information: http://dloc.com/teach/apply Partners in the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) are pleased to invite applications to an NEH Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities entitled “Migration, Mobility, and Sustainability: Caribbean Studies and Digital Humanities Institute.” This Institute is designed for anyone who teaches or supports Caribbean Studies courses or sections dealing with Caribbean Studies in courses. This Institute is also aimed at people who are interested in learning ways to utilize digital collections and implement digital tools and methods into their teaching and collaborative practices. We seek participants who are looking to create new resources for teaching Caribbean Studies in multiple fields and varying types of institutions, as well as enhance the community of practice for engaging with DH. We welcome applications from professors, instructors, graduate students, and library faculty and staff. Participants will gain DH teaching experience and in-depth knowledge of how to utilize digital collections in teaching. The Institute will provide training in tools (Scalar, TimelineJS, StoryMapJS, Mapping), processes, and resources for developing lessons, modules, and/or courses. Twenty-six participants will acquire concrete digital skills and DH approaches for teaching and research utilizing Open Access digital collections. Through participation in an enhanced community of practice for DH, they will also learn to create Open Access course and teaching materials that blend DH and Caribbean Studies. Program: Comprised of introductory readings, a week-long in-person session (held May 20-24, 2019 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida), and virtual sessions and online communication in the year following through August 2020, the Institute is structured to give participants the time and space to learn new approaches as well as integrate them into research and teaching. The overall goals of the Institute include gaining expertise in digital tools, with digital collections, and as part of a community of practice. Over the course of the program, participants will be supported in collaborating together and in developing teaching materials to be shared as Open Access. The Commons In A Box team at The Graduate Center, CUNY is delighted to announce the public release of Commons In A Box OpenLab, a free open-source software platform for teaching, learning, and collaboration. Over the past two years, we have partnered with the OpenLab team at New York City College of Technology, CUNY (City Tech) to develop a teaching-focused version of Commons In A Box modeled on City Tech’s OpenLab, an open digital platform that has served more than 27,000 members of the City Tech community since its launch in Fall 2011. With today’s release, Commons In A Box (CBOX) now includes a choice of two packages: CBOX Classic and CBOX OpenLab. CBOX Classic, the original version of our software, provides a flexible platform designed for communities of all kinds. It powers sites for hundreds of groups and organizations worldwide, who use it to create social networks where members can collaborate on projects, build communities, publish research, and create repositories of knowledge. The new package, CBOX OpenLab, is specifically designed to support teaching, learning, and collaboration. Unlike closed online teaching systems, it allows members to share their work openly with one another and the world. Like a lab, it provides a space where students, faculty, and staff can work together, experiment, and innovate. We believe CBOX OpenLab provides a powerful and flexible open alternative to costly proprietary educational platforms, enabling faculty and staff members, departments, and entire institutions to create and customize community spaces for open learning. The creation of CBOX OpenLab was made possible by generous funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Office of Digital Humanities. The project seeks to enhance humanities education – and public understanding of humanities education – by enabling the work of students, and faculty, and staff to be more visible and connected to the outside world. It also seeks to deepen engagement between the digital humanities and pedagogy by incorporating software (plugins) developed by digital humanities practitioners. Digital humanities scholarship continues to be driven by work at the intersections of a range of distinct disciplines and an ethical commitment to preserve and broaden access to cultural materials. Focused on these issues of social justice, we invite work at the intersections of critical DH; race and ethnicity; feminism, intersectionality, and gender; and anti-colonial and postcolonial frameworks to participate. Given the growth of these fields within the digital humanities, particularly in under-resourced and underrepresented areas, a number of complex issues surface, including, among others, questions of ownership, cultural theft, virtual exploitation, digital rights, endangered data<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__endangereddataweek.org_…>, and the digital divide. DH communities have raised and responded to these issues, pushing the field forward. We view the 2019 symposium as an opportunity to broaden the conversation about these issues. Additionally, we define the term "humanities" rather broadly to incorporate the discussion of issues that encourage interdisciplinary understanding of the humanities. The successful candidate will serve as a primary point of contact and project coordinator for the sponsored research projects under development by ASC Technology Services. The project coordinator will dedicate 50% time to the American Religious Sounds Project <http://religioussounds.osu.edu> (ARSP), a multi-year religious studies initiative that includes a sonic digital archive, community engagement workshops, and a multi-modal digital platform for exhibition and research. "PIIGS of Knowledge"- event in Rome

Dear all, With apologies for cross-posting. This week, (which is International Open Access Week <http://www.openaccessweek.org/>, by the way), on Wednesday October 24 and Thursday October 25 an international meeting dedicated to the digital humanities and the hegemonies of scientific knowledge will be held at Roma Tre University, Rome, Italy. The title of the event is "Ricerca scientifica, monopoli della conoscenza e Digital Humanities. Prospettive critiche dall’Europa del Sud" (Research, Monopolies of Knowledge and the Digital Humanities: Critical Perspectives from Southern Europe"). The event's goal is to turn around the pejorative "PIIGS" label (used to refer to Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain) and introduce a view from the South on the geopolitics of digital knowledge: the issues around open access, Anglophone hegemony in journal publishing, exorbitant costs of subscriptions for libraries, research assessment systems, etc. We thought it was important to interrogatet his label from socio-anthropological and postcolonial perspectives in order to take it as a starting point of resistance to the policies that are destroying Europe as a whole. The term "PIIGS" first appeared in 2009 in *The Economist *referring to the economies of Southern Europe. Our aim is to discuss how Mediterranean countries have uncritically and silently accepted the rules of the Global North regarding the production and dissemination of academic and scientific knowledge. We will reflect on how knowledge monopolies in science are manipulating the production of knowledge not only in the Global South, but also in relatively less marginal cultures and languages (including PIIGS countries). This is the question that a group of digital humanists, sociologists, philosophers, historians and economists will address in this event. The programme is attached to this email. Charles Harpur Critical Archive Launch (Oct. 17th)

Please join us for the launch of the Charles Harpur Critical Archive http://charles-harpur.org/ Wednesday, October 17, 3-4:30 pm Cuneo Hall 417 Loyola University Chicago ?We will celebrate the publication of this digital archive and scholarly edition of the poetic works and letters of Charles Harpur (1813-1868), the most important poet of colonial New South Wales. A Romantic celebrator of Australian landscape, an early environmentalist, a political satirist and love poet, Harpur and his works remain vitally alive today. But they have not been easily accessible. Project Director Prof. Paul Eggert will share some background on his inspiration and experience developing the site. He will be followed by a panel discussion on poetry and the act of revision, a key hallmark of Harpur's work, with Dr. Melissa Bradshaw, Dr. Jasper Cragwall, and Andrew Welch.
