The language of the Conference will be English. First set up in 2007 by the European Science Foundation Standing Committee for the Humanities,Cultural Literacy in Europe ran as an ESF-COST synergy 2009-2012 including international interdisciplinary workshops in four areas of LCS research – Cultural memory, Migration & Translation, Electronic textuality and Biopolitics, biosociality and the body. The initial two outcomes were an ESF-COST Science Policy Briefing ( http://www.esf.org/hosting-experts/scientific-review-groups/humanities-hum/… - no 48), published in January 2013, and a volume,From Literature to Cultural Literacy(http://us.macmillan.com/fromliteraturetoculturalliteracy/NaomiSega…, coedited by Naomi Segal and Daniela Koleva, published by Palgrave Macmillan in July 2014. No longer restricted to studying manuscripts, printed books or other language based genres in a philological mode, LCS researchers are now concerned rather with four essential conceptual elements, using them to describe, analyse and evaluate what may broadly be called the symbolic dimension of humanity’s relationship with material reality: textuality, rhetoricity, fictionality, and historicity. These concepts both represent crucial structures and processes at work in cultural objects and at the same time offer key techniques for understanding them. DH Whisperer's

Hi all, Elika Ortega wrote a great post on our "DH Whisperer" initiative in DH2014, Lausanne. One comment for the very successful Go_DH whisperer program to consider. I heard a great number of folks who have hearing disabilities ask if there was a possibility of whispering or signing to help with such issues. Would the whisperer program consider expanding to include these issues as well? language revival and endangered languages

A couple of interesting things happened / happening with respect to the Māori language that might be worth sharing: * There's a google API at https://translate.google.com/toolkit/ for languages which don't yet have a critical mass to be supported by the standard google translate tools. Using the API builds google's knowledge base of the language (hint: start with the new testament, for most small languages it's the largest aligned parallel text that's easily available). * Wikipedia is a great way raise the profile of people and activities in a cross-language fashion. See for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:M%C4%81ori_language_revivalists Wikipedia sources can be in any language, and translation of articles between languages can be set as a class exercise. Wikimedia will spin up a wikipedia in your language if you can get a couple of hundred articles written in the incubator http://incubator.wikimedia.org/ * Work in unicode. Freedman Center forDigital Scholarship ColloquiumPedagogy & Practices November 6-7, 2014 The Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship at Case Western Reserve University’s Kelvin Smith Library welcomes proposals for panels, papers, and presentations that address pedagogical approaches for using digital tools in humanities, science, and social science classrooms. Submission topics may include (but are not limited to) instructional methodologies and strategies for: - introducing undergraduate and graduate students to digital tools and methodologies for research (visualization, data mining, scholarly editing, TEI encoding, mapping, analyzing text, managing data, curating data, building digital exhibits/collections) - incorporating digital projects into existing course syllabi - advising digital dissertations, theses, or capstone projects - training students to work on extracurricular projects - collaborating with libraries and/or digital scholarship centers - training faculty in digital research, project management, and data curation Please submit 250-word abstracts and technology requirements to Amanda Koziura (amanda.koziura(a)case.edu) by ****July 31, 2014**. Como bien dice Domenico en su sugerente post, este tipo de acciones alivian poco el problema y no pueden ser tomadas como soluciones per se, pues solo los presentes en la sala que comprendan el idioma español podrán seguir el hilo de mi presentación ese día (lo que no deja de ser una exclusión). Pero lo asumo como un acto performático necesario para reflexionar y debatir sobre el valor simbólico y material de la lengua. Tengamos en cuenta que la lingua franca no es algo que exista naturalmente en nuestro mundo. La noción de lingua franca es una construcción sociopolítica que sustancia la situación de superioridad y primacía de una lengua respecto de las otras, con todas las implicaciones que llevamos debatiendo.
