Introduction

Dear list, My name is Øyvind Eide. I work a the Unit for Digital Documentation at the University of Oslo and just finished a PhD in Digital Humanities at King's College London. I am appointed from ALLC: The European Association for Digital Humanities to this SIG. On reason for my interest in this group is a long time involvement in lexicography in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and also a first nation perspective in my research, where I use historical sources with a strong link to the Sami nation. Dear colleagues, My name is Elie Dannaoui, Assistant Professor at the University of Balamand - Lebanon. I would like to thank you for facilitating these types of communications and reflections. Just few words about my research interests and activities. Few years ago, it was not easy for us to defend being at the same time involved in both Humanities and "Sciences". I say "defend" or maybe "justify" to describe a spontaneous attitude when questioned about having a multidisciplinary profile like cases similar to mine (doctorates in History and in Computer sciences). It seems that some implicit attitudes tend to become more explicit, and what we feel as Digital Humanists homogeneous has the chance to be seen as it is or at least not stereotyped and judged a priori as heterogeneous. I fully agree with Claire when she talks about recovering identities. Well, regarding my research interests, they are maybe a little bit far from the interests of the list members, I concentrate mainly on Arabic. My activities are oriented towards two objectives: 1) Arabic digital publishing mainly of the Arabic heritage. This field remains neglected and less studied. Huge efforts still to be paid on this level to follow the efforts of standardisation and scholarly editing. 2) Arabic corpus building and analysis. Currently I work on building a corpus of the Arabic Gospels translated since the 8th century. New technologies are being used in this project and many levels of analysis are being integrated. I am sure that this community will be very helpful in supporting our efforts in promoting Digital Humanities in Arabic studies and among Arabists and Arabic scholars. Half-automatized translation: a try

Dear all, Here is a try to find a way to deal fast and with efficiency with the question of a bilingual scholarly production (French and English). Introduction: Neven Jovanovic, Zagreb, Hrvatska / Croatia

Drage kolegice, dragi kolege, I have recently joined the GO:DH mailing list, so I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Neven Jovanovic, I work at the University of Zagreb, Croatia (at the Department of Classical Philology), and my primary interest in digital humanities is exploring texts, especially in Latin. To this purpose we have built a digital collection Croatiae auctores Latini (CroALa, www.ffzg.unizg.hr/klafil/croala, using ARTFL's PhiloLogic and TEI XML standard), containing Latin texts written by people connected with Croatia, and currently we're trying to see what can we learn from this collection that could not have been learned otherwise. Croatia, with population of 4.5 million, is a small country, and its DH community is small enough that we all know each other. It has its advantages and disadvantages, of course. The country is also heavily hit by an economic crisis and uses a small language, so its resources in language technology and digitisation of cultural heritage are relatively limited (and not always coherent). That is why I'm interested to see what will arise from GO:DH discussions and exchange of ideas. And I'll circulate the news about GO:DH to people I know. Presentation and concrete propositions

Dear everyone, I am Marin Dacos, director of the Center for open electronic publishing. As Claire Clivaz, I am happy to see that people don't forget their discipline. In my case, I was an historian, but now I am fully a digital humanist, as my job is 100% to facilitate the open access publications in arts, humanities and social sciences. I am the founder of Revues.org, Calenda, Hypotheses and the soon to be released OpenEdition Books. The OpenEdition team is located in Marseilles, but also in Paris and Lisbon, and we plan more partnerships in other countries and towns. OpenEdition aim is to improve visibility of humanities online, and to foster innovations in digital publishing. Our main project, in this concern, is Hypotheses, which is a multilingual platform for academic blogging. We already have a german version, thanks to a partnership with the Max Weber Fundation, and a spanish version, thanks to a partnership with Uned (Madrid). We have other partnerships in preparation. OpenEdition is involved in promoting bibliodiversity and open access. The concept of bibliodiversity includes : - diversity of languages - diversity of publishing places - diversity of publishing players We are convinced that globalization does not mean that we will have domination of only one culture, one player, one paradigm and one language. This would be a global failure and lead research and culture to a sad poverty. We think that globalization means mixing, hybridation and exchanges. And strong linguistic areas. As far as I know, the brilliant german philosophical tradition owes a lot to german language, and it is probably the case for a lot of paradigms and innovations. Saying that, I don't think that we have to fight English a common language. But I would defend Globish as a common language, because there are few non English native speakers that are able to speak/write with a very elegant and subtlety language in English. For this reason, I would recommand to revamp the organization of our DH international events. They should be held in Globish, with a lot of respect for non-native speakers. Some propositions : - when an English native speaker is speaking, all non native would have a "green card" that they could rise at any time during the conference. This would be used to say "I don't understand, you speak to fast, or you are making references to cultural anglo-american knowledge" - international conferences should take care of the quality of the sound in the rooms used for conferences. For example, the quality of the sound during the introducing conference of Claudine Moulin in Hambourg was not good, and it was difficult to understand 100% of her talk, which was very interesting. - during the expertise process of DH conferences, we have to encourage non native speakers by any possible ways. The goal should be to reach parity. We should consider that perfection of the English language SHOULD NOT BE ANYMORE a criteria of selection. That will take time. We should consider that this change won't occur in less than 5 or 10 years. But we should involve in this process. Affirmative action could be one way. Other ways could be to put money in translation processes. We could also ask to English native speakers to submit their article in Spanish or in French... They would discover how difficult it is for us, and that they should become more indulgent in the selection process. Or both. I am against the idea of making different language-based sessions in international DH events. We should use only English, in order to be sure to reach a full audience, and avoid language-based ghettos. Last, but not least, I would be very happy if English native speakers could support non natives in enhancing their English. I would suggest that one US/UK searcher support one non US/UK searcher. Hi everyone, I'm David Large, a final-year PhD candidate and Teaching Fellow in the Dept of English at the University of Sydney, in NSW, Australia. I'm working, generally speaking, on intertextuality in the early writings of Malcolm Lowry in the 1920s and 30s, and I frequently use DH tools for text comparison and editorial / comparative markup (simple TEI). I attended DHSI at UVic in 2011, and DHWI at U Maryland just a few weeks ago. The institutes were a lot of fun, and through the people I've met while overseas, as well as through DHCommons, I've also joined up with the Modernist Versions Project <http://web.uvic.ca/~mvp1922/> out of UVic, for which I'm working on Joseph Conrad's *Nostromo*, and the new Twentieth Century Literary Letters Project (site forthcoming), which we're still in the process of getting off the ground. I'm a booster for international collaboration on these sorts of projects, and I'm looking forward to being part of the global conversation regarding DH. I'm all for keeping our borders porous and welcoming our new member from Spain! I think all of us can also sympathize with Ernesto's concern about e-mail overload. Maybe we could create a Google Group (or something similar) to facilitate the discussion process. This might be a good solution because it would allow full integration with e-mail for those who don't have Web access. Others could choose not to receive e-mail updates and follow the discussion online. Or maybe part of the issue is that some of our threads have actually not been posted to the official [globaloutlookDH-l] and have instead been sent directly to participants, bypassing the digest format for those who have subscribed to it. Recovering Identities

Bonjour à tous! Hi to all the list! A very interesting effect of the presentations in GO::DH is that DH'ers are again presenting their field of specialisation in Humanities. We are arriving at a new step where DH are disseminated enough in order to let the DH'ers recover particular identities in Humanities. I am professor assistant in New Testament and Early Christian Litterature in Switzerland (Lausanne). Wirking on NT manuscripts, I arrived logically in DH. My main interest is epistemology and cultural history in DH. Nous assistons à un effet tres intéressant des présentations dans GO::DH. En retrouvant leur identite linguistique et culturelle, les chercheurs laissent aussi s'exprimer leur identité de chercheurs, leur champ de specialisation. Les Humanités commencent à se redéployer (les "nouvelles humanites", newhumanities.org). Je suis professeur assistante en Nouveau Testament et litterature chretienne ancienne. Travaillant sur les manuscrits du NT, je suis arrivée naturellement aux DH. Mon intérêt principal est pour l'épistémologie et l'histoire culturelle des DH. Claire Clivaz (Lausanne, CH)
