Dear Colleagues,
I write to share a CFP that may be of interest.
Note that there are small bursaries for students and early career
researchers.

*Digital Diasporas: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, 6 and 7 June 2019*
https://crosslanguagedynamics.blogs.sas.ac.uk/digital-diasporas/call-for-pa…
Venue: School of Advanced Study, Senate House (University of London)
Since Appadurai wrote on the intertwined phenomena of electronic media and
migration as disruptive and defining features of modern subjectivity
(1996), the relationship between digital technologies and diasporic
communities has emerged as a critical area of study across a number of
disciplines. However, such research risks remaining isolated within
disciplinary silos, often despite the similar processes, practices and
materials studied. This conference aims to inspire greater dialogue across
disciplinary boundaries in order to develop a richer understanding of the
role of the digital in creating and sustaining diasporic connections and
communities, and of how diasporic groups and individuals transform and
shape digital tools and technologies for their own creative and strategic
purposes.
Through this dialogue it is hoped that new transdisciplinary ways of
working may develop which challenge knowledge fragmentation in order to
confront the complexity of the contemporary context of intensified cultural
and linguistic flows and new patterns of human mobility. At the same time,
drawing attention to diasporic narratives and approaches to digital culture
and technologies can function as both critique and challenge to centralised
narratives of digital progress and development often restricted to
predominantly Anglophone contexts.
We especially welcome research which pays attention to the linguistic and
cultural dimensions of digital technologies and media. This is, however,
not restricted to any specific geographical area, language or type of
community. Equally, the digital is intended to encompass the fullest range
of digital practices, materials and technologies, while the conference aims
to include methodological and analytical approaches ranging across, for
example, ethnographic, cultural studies and computational approaches.
Areas of particular, but not exclusive, interest include:
Social media and migration focused research;
Multilingualism and digitally mediated communications;
Histories of the internet and web archives research;
Ethnographies of the internet and uses of digital technologies (including
research combining offline-online methods);
Digital media, cultural and visual studies;
Digital and diasporic cultural memory;
Digitally mapping and visualising migrations and diasporic networks, with
attention to ethical and political concerns.
Invited keynote and panel speakers include: Jannis Androutsopoulos
(Universität Hamburg); Tobias Blanke (King’s College London); Alexandra
Georgakopoulou (King’s College London); Agnieszka Lyons (Queen Mary,
University of London); Mirca Madianou (Goldsmiths, University of London);
Sandra Ponzanesi (Utrecht University); Roopika Risam (Salem State
University); Caroline Tagg (The Open University); Funda Ustek-Spilda
(London School of Economics/Goldsmiths); Janet Zmroczek (British Library)
We invite abstract submissions for 20-minute presentations. Abstracts
should be between 150-300 words in length (the bibliography does not count
towards the word limit). Presentations can be on previously published
research or ongoing projects. We intend to develop a Special Issue or
edited volume which will include an invited selection of the research
presented at the conference.
In order to incorporate emerging work in progress, particularly from
ongoing PhD projects, the conference will have space for a smaller number
of lightning research talks of 5-7 minutes for which we also invite
abstracts of 100-200 words.
Please submit through EasyChair:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dd2019
*T**he deadline for submissions is 1 December 2018.* Accepted papers will
be confirmed by 1 February 2019.
We also have a small number of bursaries of £100 to contribute towards
travel and/or accommodation costs for postgraduate students or Early Career
Researchers (within 8 years of receiving a PhD) whose submissions are
accepted and who have restricted access to alternative funding for
conference attendance. If you would like to be considered for an award,
please attach with your submission a pdf or word document with a short
statement of no more than 300 words explaining what the benefits of
attending the conference would be for you and your research.

*CALL FOR PAPERS*
1. Geopolítica de las Humanidades Digitales: lo global, lo local;
conocimiento a través de las Humanidades Digitales;
recuperación al borrado de la información en internet;
Digitales: recursos y herramientas;
5. Metodologías digitales: entre nuevas epistemologías y nuevos
problemas para el campo;
6. Edición digital académica, anotación semántica,
geolocalización. Crowdsourcing
de textos, imágenes, audios;
7. Archivo y Documentación: escaneado, memoria, preservación;
8. Bibliotecas, Labs, Fablabs: espacios de ciudadanía y democratización
del conocimiento;
teatro, juegos digitales y nuevos medios;
10. Innovación y transformación digital en la academia:
comunicación científica, visibilidad, y formas de apertura;
11. Fake news, post-verdad y Humanidades Digitales:
relaciones posibles;
12. Cultura, Diversidad, Educación, Feminismo y sus
mediaciones con las tecnologías digitales.
Coordinado por los profesores Ricardo M. Pimenta (IBICT) y Gimena del Rio
Riande (IIBICRIT, CONICET).

*HUMANIDADES DIGITAIS: OLHARES DO SUL*
políticos, educativos, culturais e sociotécnicos, as ditas Humanidades
teoria e prática, tendo como foco as Humanidades Digitais desenvolvidas no
âmbito do Sul ou tendo-o como referência.
Alguns eixos temáticos:
1. Geopolítica das Humanidades Digitais: o global, o local;
2. Contexto sociotécnico, político e cultural da produção do
conhecimento por meio das Humanidades Digitais;
recuperação ao apagamento da informação na internet;
4. Ciência aberta enquanto política e prática das Humanidades Digitais:
recursos e ferramentas;
5. Metodologias digitais: entre novas epistemologias e novos problemas
para o campo;
6. Edição digital, anotação semântica, geolocalização. Crowdsourcing de
texto, imagens, áudios;
7. Arquivo e Documentação: digitalização, memória, preservação;
8. Bibliotecas, Labs, Fablabs: espaços de cidadania e democratização do
conhecimento;
9. Do lúdico à ciência: arte digital, arquitetura, música, cinema,
teatro, jogos digitais e novas mídias;
10. Inovação e transformação digital na academia: comunicação
científica, visibilidades, e formas de abertura;
11. Notícias falsas, pós-verdade e humanidades digitais:
interligações possíveis;
12. Cultura, Diversidade, Educação, Feminismo e suas
mediações com as tecnologias digitais.
Organizado pelos professores Ricardo M. Pimenta (IBICT) e Gimena del Rio
Riande (IIBICRIT, CONICET).
normas editoriais.

*CALL FOR PAPERS*
*DIGITAL HUMANITIES: VIEWS FROM THE SOUTH*
Liinc Journal invites scholars to submit articles for their dossier
"Digital Humanities: views from the South", organized by profs. Ricardo
Pimenta (Ibict) and Gimena del Rio Riande (IIBICRIT, CONICET), for
publication in issue 1, volume 15, at May 2019. Original articles are
accepted in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
In a global scientific scenario where digital solutions have elicited the
most varied reflections about their human implications in political,
educational, cultural and sociotechnical terms, the Digital Humanities has
been the focus of varied interests among researchers from the field of
Social Sciences, Literature and Linguistics, Arts, Education, Information
and Computer Sciences. Its new methods, altogether with the traditional
Humanities approaches, have given rise to new research objects,
epistemologies and results, built with digital resources.
Thus, the Digital Humanities, on the one hand, set possibilities for
scientific production and dissemination and also a series of inquiries
where the mediations of the digital rhetorics gain place among humanists.
In the academic horizon of the South such issues are even more poignant. In
a context defined by asymmetry of resources, competencies and
opportunities, the South offers issues and challenges that are often
nonexistent in the Digital Humanities from the North.
This dossier proposes the construction of "bridges" and meeting points
between theory and practice, taking as reference the Digital Humanities
developed in the South.
Some topics:
1. Geopolitics of the Digital Humanities: the global, the local;
2. Sociotechnical, political and cultural context of knowledge
production through the Digital Humanities;
3. Reading and writing in the digital age: from information register
and recovery to deletion on the internet;
4. Open science as Digital Humanities policy and practice: resources
and tools;
5. Digital methodologies: new epistemologies and new problems in the
field;
6. Scholarly digital edition, semantic annotation, geolocation.
Crowdsourcing of texts, images, audios;
7. File and Documentation: scanning, memory, preservation;
8. Libraries, Labs, Fablabs: spaces for citizenship and knowledge
democratization;
9. From ludic to science: digital art, architecture, music, cinema,
theater, digital games and new media;
10. Innovation and digital transformation in academia:
scholarly communication, visibility, and openness;
11. Fake news, post-truth and Digital Humanities: possible
relationships;
12. Culture, Diversity, Education, Feminism and digital
technologies mediations.
Coordinated by Ricardo M. Pimenta (IBICT) and Gimena del Rio Riande
(IIBICRIT, CONICET).
Besides the dossier, Liinc in Revista is open to submission of articles and
reviews on other subjects in its scope of reflection, according to its
editorial standards.

HI all,
I wanted to let you all know the status of the executive committee. I have sent several emails to the executive members who are rotating off and the current members requesting help in running elections. I’ve heard a response from one current person and one former. The former folks are off and have no responsibility. There doesn’t seem to be interest from the executive committee as currently formed to move forward with voting.
I do not think that the organization can move ahead with only one or two people willing to work for it. At this point I am not sure of how to proceed, but I wanted to let the membership know that I have tried to constitute an ec (currently there is no chair, so no one is really in charge), but there is not enough response to move ahead.

Dear all,
I am not sure what the fate of this email list will be, not sure if we are
supposed to still use it or if anyone is still receiving messages.
Can I ask if there is or if there is a plan for a new email list moderator,
or is it just being phased out? Last chance we checked there were 500+
members; it seems like a unique resource and a shame to just let it die.
Anyway:
In other lists I am a member of Jon Tennant has shared the first formally
published version of the Open Scholarship Strategy:
https://zenodo.org/record/1323437#.W17HXNL7RPY
"The purpose of this document is to provide a concise analysis of where the
global Open Scholarship movement currently stands: what the common threads
and strengths are, where the greatest opportunities and challenges lie, and
how we can more effectively work together as a global community to
recognise the
top strategic priorities."
As Jon notes,
"The main document is available in a range of formats: markdown, R
markdown, Epub, iPython notebook, open document text, PDF, rich-text
format, LaTeX, plain text, xml, and html. Comments and contributions to the
next version are welcome through THIS MARKDOWN FILE
<https://github.com/Open-Scholarship-Strategy/site/blob/master/index.Rmd>,
or if you are uncomfortable with traditional Git-based workflows, through
the issue tracker HERE
<https://github.com/Open-Scholarship-Strategy/site/issues>.
In addition to the above, the pilot module for the Open Science MOOC
<https://github.com/OpenScienceMOOC/Module-5-Open-Research-Software-and-Open…>,
Open Source and Open Research Software, is now open for community feedback.
We would welcome comments and criticisms
<https://github.com/OpenScienceMOOC/Module-5-Open-Research-Software-and-Open…>
from anyone interested, and all realms of scholarly communication!"
As this is part of the domain of the digital humanities, affecting most
crucially colleages from the Global South, I thought I'd share here.
Hoping you are all well,
Ernesto
