GO::DH Elections

Hi! The ballot for the first GO::DH elections is now open. This will be for the first elected executive and the beginning of GO::DH as a true representative community. For this first election, all eight positions on the executive are open. In future years half will come up for election each year. There are 16 candidates. The ballot can be found at the following URL: http://bit.ly/MsaTaX (the link will take you to a Google Doc). Everybody subscribed to the globaloutlookdh-l(a)uleth.ca<mailto:globaloutlookdh-l@uleth.ca> mailing list is eligible to vote. The ballot contains biographies of all candidates who provided them and a form for selecting up to 8 choices. The form also asks for your email address. This is used only to ensure eligibility and avoid inadvertent multiple votes. Your ballot is secret--only the aggregate results will be shared. The ballot will remain open for one week, until the end of Monday 3 Mar 2014 at the International dateline (i.e. Noon UTC Tuesday March 4). Help with position ads for PoCo in English (TT)?

Hi all, We may be about to receive permission to hire a tenure track, junior position in Post Colonial literature focussing on Anglophone literature (we need to wait for a budget to come down, next Thursday). There is a slight chance it might be a different discipline, but the betting is on PoCo. I've been looking around for example ads, especially those that might include a digital component. A quick search is not showing many that mention DH explicitly. Does anybody know of examples with DH and PostColonial? If the job is allowed, BTW, we should know by the end of next week. It will be a 2:2 teaching load (reduced, probably to 1:2 in the first year), with start up research funds (I am told recently in the range of $10k-15k, though it is entirely subject to negotiation and budget conditions), and a great institutional interest in both graduate studies and DH. The position will be emphatically about Anglophone literature, I suspect (we are very short handed at the moment) and people will be expected to be able to teach other general courses in English literature (surveys, genres, first year, that type of thing). The University of Lethbridge doesn't really teach remedial composition and what composition is taught is not taught in English. So all your teaching would be literary/domain-specific. Independently of this position, we are in the process of putting together a major University-wide incubator programme that will have a heavy DH component, including what looks like a new knowledge Mobilisation or Maker's lab. An appropriate person would be welcome to participate in this. I'll know more next week and it is always possible it may fall through. Open Access Journals Outside High Income Economies

Hi all, I'm on the executive committee at force11.org, a Community of Practice focussed on the future of Research Communication and e-Scholarship. It is an interesting group because of the range of domains and sectors it involves: Science and humanities, Commercial and Open access, and so on. We're in the early planning stages of a series of workshops on "the Commons and the Silo", in which we want to look specifically at what is common and what is unique across the entire domain of scholarly and Scientific dissemination. I have two questions that this group is probably the best place to ask. The first is whether anybody knows of similar groups focussed specifically on the issues of Research Communication and dissemination outside the High Income World or of initiatives we really should know about about scholarly communication in a global context (I should stress, BTW, that this ignorance is a reflection on me not Force11). The second is whether anybody on this list is working on anything similar and/ or would be interested in being kept in the loop on our progress. Kickstarting GO:DH Minimal Computing Working Group with DH2014 Workshop

Hello Global DH, Part of the GO:DH initiative was the creation of a working group focused on minimal computing. This group is meant to ask questions about computer use that is decidedly *not* high-performance and to explore answers to these questions. Both the maintenance and refurbishing of machines out of necessity and the use of new streamlined computing hardware like the Raspberry Pi belong squarely in the target area of this working group. A short summary may be found at http://www.globaloutlookdh.org/working-groups/minimal-computing/ . Haven’t heard of the minimal computing working group? This shouldn’t be a surprise, we haven’t done anything yet! That changes now. We’d like to kickstart the working group into action by offering a workshop at DH2014 that will allow us an opportunity to get a survey of the state of minimal computing within the DH community and to set tasks for ongoing research and support in the area. The tentative format for this half-day workshop is as follows: 1. A series of lightning talks (2-5 minutes) about current research or work being done with or in a minimal computing environment. These would be drawn in advance with a CFP. Those unable to attend the workshop but wishing to present would be invited to share videos. 2. A focused brainstorming session directed at collecting ideas and projects that the Minimal Computing Working Group or its members should consider pursuing. It is hoped that some form of participation will be open to those not on site, but this will depend or the infrastructure that is available. This goes for the third stage as well. 3. The selection of a set of tasks, directives, and/or projects that the minimal computing working group will coordinate and support. These will follow directly from the previous stages but these might look something like programs to: * provide training to the DH community to use minimal computing tools * share/ship computing resources to areas that might better use them * track hardware and software use in the humanities on a global scale * provide or recommend packages of hardware and software that are effective and proven ******** What I need to know from the community is what you think of this approach and whether or not you are willing to participate (either in person or by sending a video or by participating in the discussion or in some other way). ******** I’d like to get the workshop application drafted this week so any responses to this in advance of Saturday, February 15, would be greatly appreciated.
