Open Access Journals Outside High Income Economies

Hi all, I'm on the executive committee at force11.org, a Community of Practice focussed on the future of Research Communication and e-Scholarship. It is an interesting group because of the range of domains and sectors it involves: Science and humanities, Commercial and Open access, and so on. We're in the early planning stages of a series of workshops on "the Commons and the Silo", in which we want to look specifically at what is common and what is unique across the entire domain of scholarly and Scientific dissemination. I have two questions that this group is probably the best place to ask. The first is whether anybody knows of similar groups focussed specifically on the issues of Research Communication and dissemination outside the High Income World or of initiatives we really should know about about scholarly communication in a global context (I should stress, BTW, that this ignorance is a reflection on me not Force11). The second is whether anybody on this list is working on anything similar and/ or would be interested in being kept in the loop on our progress. Closing the Gap

Dear Colleagues, During the last few weeks I have reviewed some articles (all in English) by non-native speakers. Some times they are almost perfect, some others they are far from it. I know that my own texts suffer the same problems. Clearly, this is a factor that keeps scholars, who are not native speakers of English, marginalised. We had a similar discussion on the subject of the Anglo-American (and Canadian) hegemony in the field, but I don't recall a concrete solution being offered. In any case, I have an idea that might be helpful. I was wondering whether I could ask those of you with native or near-native English skills to volunteer to proof articles to avoid rejections based on bad expression or avoidable mistakes. If you think that you can contribute to this, send me an e-mail and I will compile a list of volunteers to put in the GO::DH website. Thank you for your help, BB

Kind greetings Claire Clivaz (University of Lausanne, CH) -- Digital Humanities Venice Fall School /October 7-11, 2013 / http://bit.ly/DHV13 EPFL (The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) and Ca' Foscari University of Venice have recently joined forces to establish a research center on digital humanities in Venice (for a press release, see http://actu.epfl.ch/news/the-venice-time-machine-science-humanities-and-the/). We have also launched a research program based on the digitization and transcription of one of the very large archive in Venice, the Archivio di Stato. One of our first initiatives has been to organise a joint PhD fall school in Venice from October 7-11, 2013. During the five days in Venice, experts in the Digital Humanities from Harvard, King's College, EPFL, Ca' Foscari University of Venice and Italy's Institute of Information Science and Technologies, will give seminars, hands-on workshops and in situ working visits to important Venetian archives, museums and neighbourhoods.
